Decoupage on wood with rice paper. How to use rice paper for decoupage
Recently, decorating items using decoupage has become increasingly popular. This technique has roots in the distant past. Today, traditional and more modern methods and materials for gluing pictures on dishes, kitchen utensils, boxes and other items are used. The use of rice paper is not a new decoupage technique. It has its pros, cons and certain rules use.

Types of rice paper for crafts
Having decided to take up the technique of decoupaging objects, you will inevitably begin to study numerous posts on the Internet, videos, photo examples, or go to special courses. In a short period of time you will be taught how to use decoupage postcards, maps, and how to glue them to glass, wood, and other textures. But there is not a lot of information on how to use rice paper correctly. The main message of all master classes is that the material is easy to use, buy it, you won’t regret it. All beginners are guided by this and purchase printing on rice paper in large quantities, without even suspecting the pitfalls that you need to be aware of.
Rice paper
The main thing that needs to be firmly understood is that it is easy to glue rice paper, but only of a certain thickness. This material not only has different manufacturers, but is divided by subtlety. The unit of measurement was set to gram per square meter g/sq.m.
The most common and best-selling sheets are size 50/70, thickness:
- 10 g/sq.m
- 14 g/sq.m
- 20 g/sq.m
Paper for decoupage
There are several more intermediate sizes, for example, 15 g/sq.m. These numbers speak volumes to those who have enough experience in working with printed designs on rice sheets. Using rice paper for decoupage, without taking into account its thickness, is quite difficult. This material is much stronger than regular napkins, but therein lies the problem. By choosing a thick sheet of 20 g/sq.m to paste onto a glass glass or thin vase, you risk getting rough edges of the design that are difficult to hide. And for forming a convex image, such material is quite suitable.
Decorated pot lid
Today you can buy rice paper from well-known manufacturers: Calambour, Esprimo, Stamperia and others. If you buy materials in online stores, then in the case of rice paper you should pay attention not only to the birds and flowers depicted on it, but also to the gram. When shopping at regular retail outlets, you can touch the product and decide how suitable it is.
Material happens different colors. The most popular type of plain rice paper is white. Such sheets are often used for backing, drawing or printing.
Features of working with a rice napkin
Sticking rice paper to any work surface is actually easier than a regular napkin. It is more durable; this property does not cause instant soaking of the fibers. But it has its own characteristics. If you look closely at the leaf, you will see numerous veins on it - rice fibers. This is an integral part of the material. When working with transparent objects, such as when decoupaging rice paper on glass, fibers can add to the design problems. And if you work with wood or ceramics, they will give the image a special charm and uniqueness.
Pictures for creativity
The most important thing you need to know about the structure of rice fibers is that they cannot be torn off with an even edge. If you are used to not cutting out, but tearing out a picture, then nail scissors will still not hurt you. Fibers will hang from the torn edges and spoil the whole job. Just carefully trim them around the entire perimeter of the cliff. It is not worth cutting out the design completely, especially if you decide to glue the design onto glass - the edges will not be so easy to smooth out.
Direct and reverse decoupage technique
Let's consider step-by-step master class by decoupage with rice paper on glass. For convenience, let’s take direct decoupage, but with a caveat to the peculiarities of the opposite. First you need to purchase materials.
Many images on a napkin
You will need the same things that you purchase for working with napkins.
- Acrylic primer and paint.
- PVA glue.
- Special varnish in an aerosol or in a jar.
- Several types of brushes, a sponge for primer, a file, if you prefer the method of applying a design using it.
The first step is to tear out the drawing. Do this carefully, trimming the fibers at the same time. Don't throw away the remaining pieces of paper; they will be useful for filling in the background. Use nail scissors, they will trim the edges more naturally.
Rice paper for decoupage is a thin paper with a rough surface, the basis of which is rice fibers. On the front side of such paper you can apply motifs and images that need to be used in decoupage. In essence, working with such paper is similar to working with napkins, but some features of the paper make the process of using it easier.
Decorating with this paper gives a chic effect. You can try working with it on some small object - decorate a small vase, candle, glass. And you don’t need expensive tools, the work is quite simple.
And rice paper differs not only by manufacturer (these are Tenkalik, Premier, Craft, Renkalik), but also by its thickness. The unit of measurement is grams per square meter, so the most common paper sizes (densities) are 10 grams per square meter, 14 grams per square meter and 20 grams per square meter. Accordingly, the thinner the paper, or more precisely its density, the better it will get wet from glue and water.
In general, for beginners this is very good option. You can do something very simple with rice paper, not very large, and the likelihood that everything will work out the first time is almost one hundred percent. This is good for gaining experience and modest beginnings.
Rules and tips: how to use rice paper for decoupage
The first thing you should learn is how to extract a motif from such paper. Thin paper made from rice fibers will blend perfectly with the selected background. The fiber of paper has a transparent structure. If you choose a material with a high density, then when cutting you will get very clear paper borders on the item you are decorating.
Therefore, you need to use scissors when the borders of the selected design will later be additionally decorated, painted over, or will somehow be hidden on top with decor.
If you decide to make the edges of the motif invisible:
- The drawing must be torn out with your own hands;
- In the process of tearing out the pictures, reaching the fibers, they are trimmed with nail scissors;
- If you simply tear without using scissors, you can tear the rice paper, the fibers will not separate properly, and this will ruin the image.
But the most difficult and most interesting thing at the same time is gluing rice paper. The process itself is very similar to how traditional decoupage is done. But, of course, there are some peculiarities.
Master class: decoupage with rice paper on glass
The glass product must first be washed, dried and degreased. If it is a bottle, be sure to wash it thoroughly in soapy water. The metal surface, by the way, is pre-primed, and the wooden surface is sanded.
Next, you need to take care of the background on which the fragments will be glued. When working with a glass product, you need to try on the fragment first, and not glue it right away. These steps are needed to evaluate the background. Rice paper is very thin and the base on which the fragments are glued can be visible.
To obtain a more defined image, the area of the applied pattern is painted over acrylic paint light tone. After such preparation, you must decide how exactly you will glue.
There are several gluing methods:
- Varnish. The image is placed in the desired area of the surface, and then coated with varnish using a soft brush. Move from the center to the borders.
- Glue. You can even use a regular glue stick. You coat the surface with it, press the design, and roll it with a roller. When the glue dries, everything is secured with acrylic varnish.
You can also capture images on water. Moisten the design with a brush with water and attach the motif to the product. After the water has evaporated, coat the design with glue or varnish. The good thing about this method is that you can move the drawing as long as it is just wetted with water, there will be no deformation. Wet it, apply it and move it until you find the right place. With varnish and glue, the effect will immediately be the opposite - where you apply it, it will stick there.
Decoupage with rice paper on wood, master class
The surface is prepared - sanded with sandpaper, all irregularities are removed. Using a wide brush, acrylic primer is applied to the wooden product. While it hardens, select pieces of rice paper.
- Brown rice paper covers the entire wooden surface (let's say it's a shelf);
- While everything is drying, prepare new fragments; use sandpaper to sand the edge of the paper;
- Stick the desired fragment onto the selected location with decoupage varnish;
- To obtain a marble texture, use a sponge to go over the surface of the product, in addition to the main image - you will get an imitation of marble, similar stains;
- When everything is dry, coat everything with acrylic varnish in two layers.
Sometimes the techniques are combined - fragments of napkins, rice paper, and fabric are used on one product. This can be used to decorate a table or even decorate kitchen tiles. But they usually start with decoupage of bottles.
What is a rice card for decoupage
Decoupage cards are special sheets of paper with different thematic images. They are made in a factory, the design is made with high quality ink. Anything can be depicted on them - flowers, angels, night cities, vintage pictures.
Rice decoupage cards are sometimes called rice napkins. They can have different densities, different sizes. Preference is given to thin cards with thin fibers; these fibers do not interfere with work at all. Manufacturers usually indicate the density on paper.
Is it possible to print on rice paper for decoupage?
Many craftswomen use rice paper for calligraphy in their work. It is a little thicker than napkins, but much stronger, and it does not wrinkle. And when gluing a fragment, the border can be easily hidden. Such paper can be sold in rolls of 10 m.
Such paper is cut into sheets, and before printing it must be ironed. Then the leaves are inserted into the printer (one at a time), but several sheets are inserted first office paper. She will act as a guide. Good quality Printouts are produced on a laser printer. But inkjet printers using pigment inks cope best with the task of printing on rice paper.

Rice paper for decoupage is one of the most convenient and thin materials for this type of needlework. Due to its unique and rare qualities, rice paper fits perfectly on every uneven surface that is to be decorated. It makes no difference what material you work with, be it wood, glass or plastic. As a result, you will not see any folds, bubbles, or any other damage on it.
In this lesson, you will learn what rice paper is made of, how to use it in decoupage, and also consider a master class through which you will learn how to decorate objects around you with rice paper.
Working with rice paper
Rice paper is distinguished not only by country of origin, but also by density. Basically, you can buy three types of density of rice paper in the store, namely: 10 g/m2, 14 g/m2, 20 g/m2. Its thickness determines how quickly it gets wet under the influence of water or glue. The thinner the thickness, the faster you can apply the paper to any surface.
In order for the image to blend perfectly with the background, it is recommended to use paper of a size such as 10 g/m2, it is much thinner than other examples. If you want to make an intricate interrupted motif, it is preferable to take thin material and cut it with small scissors. If desired, you can do this yourself by tearing out the necessary images.
The rice paper is too thick and quite whimsical. When you cut it with scissors, you risk getting raised contours. In this case, the use of scissors is rational if, after finishing work on the decoupage, you paint over the edges and contours of the pasted pattern with different shades of paint, which will hide the clear boundaries.
If you don’t prefer to make such boundaries, then tear out the motive yourself. When you reach the fiber, cut it with manicure scissors. Otherwise, you risk tearing the paper in the wrong place, which will lead to disruption of the contours of the design or the fiber may stretch out, which is also not good for further decoupage.
After you have made the correct manipulations with the rice paper, you can start gluing it to the surface of the craft. First of all, make sure that the product is completely degreased with alcohol or detergent, and then primed and sanded. Decide clearly for yourself what color the background will be, since the wetted material is very transparent. It would be best to paint the surface with light acrylic paint. Then, for sure, you will not be able to spoil what you originally intended.
Now, you need to decide what type of fittings you will glue the picture on, varnish, glue or water.
Gluing rice paper using varnish is one of the most common methods in decoupage. It is applied with a brush to the surface, starting from the middle, and then continuing to the very borders of the motif.
Applying varnish is almost similar to the previous decoupage method. But, there is one small nuance: after you coat the paper with glue before applying the image, and then on top of it, after drying, acrylic varnish must be applied. It is advisable to do this several times, leaving gaps between drying. Then, work using the decoupage technique will last much longer.
The water gluing method is also not very complicated. First of all, the paper is moistened with water, then it is adjusted to the craft. When the water evaporates, glue or varnish is applied. This method is great because you have the opportunity to see what the decoupage display will look like. If you don’t like this look, you can easily swap the paper and do it the way you want. This option for working with rice paper will be useful if various pieces of rice paper are glued on. This way, you can find a suitable angle for cutting.
After this information, you probably managed to make sure that decoupage paper made from rice fibers is ideal for creating beautiful things. If you compare such paper with napkins, then rice paper has slight advantages. With it you don’t have to worry about the fibers deteriorating or it tearing in the most visible place. If you follow the rules listed in the article, your masterpieces will last a long time and look great.
Decoration of a tray table with rice paper
Using the decoupage technique, you can restore most things and decorative items. Furniture in this style looks especially beautiful. One of the frequently used pieces of furniture is the tray table. I drink tea and coffee on it, do homework and work on my laptop.
To conduct a master class, you will need a table with wooden legs and a plastic tabletop. First of all, it needs to be primed. Wooden frames, are primed with a brush, and the plastic surface is treated with a kitchen sponge, this will be more convenient. After such manipulations, you will have a table with an evenly painted surface and side parts. After such an item has dried, it needs to be sanded with sandpaper to remove all roughness and unevenness. Having done this work, you will get an even and smooth table.
For decoupage, rice paper is used, on a scale of 14 g/sq. m.
Due to the fact that this material is quite thin, it will blend perfectly with the plane during gluing. In order for the process to be perfect, all motifs will be pulled out with your own hands, without using scissors.
Try the images on the tray table so that the pattern lies evenly and you can start gluing. Take PVA glue, slightly diluted with water and spread it on top of the rice paper.
Next, let's work on the wooden sides of the table. Apply dark paint to the bottom. Then, rub the candle stub on those places that can be easily sanded. At the end of these actions, you will get a table with an aging effect or in the so-called shabby chic style. Scuffs should be located in those places where they appear over time, namely in the corners and sides of the legs.
When the candle is finished, apply the light paint you used at the beginning of the master class. One layer is enough. Dark paint will show through the light tone, this is what you need.
Again we make artificial abrasions using sandpaper. It is important to try to remove the light tier, which simply goes away, thanks to the candles.
The very last step in decoupage using rice paper is applying several layers of acrylic varnish. In this case, matte yacht varnish is used. It is applied with a washcloth in two layers.
This paper is made from rice fibers and is ideal for decoupage. With its help, you can create a beautiful image without wasting precious time on finishing touches. You will be able to discover wide possibilities in such handicrafts and surprise the people around you.

Napkins for decoupage and their use in work (photo)
Rice paper for decoupage is a thin paper with a rough surface, which is based on rice fibers. Various images and motifs are applied to the front side of such material, which are used for decoupage work. The technology for its use in this type of needlework is the same as with napkins for decoupage, but due to its different properties, rice paper has its own advantages and some points that are not always paid attention to, which subsequently leads to incorrect conclusions.
Decorating products with this material gives an amazing effect. Try to buy rice material for decoupage and use it to decorate some small bottle, vase, or old glass. And in a moment you will breathe new life into boring objects. In addition, for this you will not need a lot of time and expensive tools. Such details will diversify the interior, for example, of your kitchen, not to mention the fact that this is a wonderful hand-made gift for loved ones.
In this lesson, we will analyze the features and subtleties of working with rice paper, and also give an example of a master class where you can consider the process of decoupage with such interesting material.
Rice paper is distinguished not only by manufacturer, but also by its thickness. The unit of measurement for this material is considered to be grams per square meter; accordingly, the most common densities of such paper are:
- 10 grams per sq. m;
- 14 grams per sq. m;
- 20 grams per sq. m.
The thinner the selected paper density, the better it gets wet from water and glue.
How best to extract the motive
Thin rice fiber paper blends very well with the chosen background. Fiber in paper whose density is ten grams per square meter. m, has a more transparent structure than the same material with a density of twenty grams per square meter. m. Due to these properties, before applying a complex contour image to the product, purchase thinner material that can be easily cut using nail scissors. In addition, you can easily tear out the images you need with your own hands.
If you have chosen paper for decoupage, the density of which is quite high, learn some of the features of working with it. When cutting out a design with scissors, you will end up with too clear paper borders on the item you are decorating. Therefore, use scissors in the case when the borders of the selected pattern will later be subject to additional framing, painting, or you will additionally hide them with various decorations.
In the case when you decide to make the edges of the motif invisible, you will need to tear out the design with your own hands. But due to the special structure of rice paper, you still have to use scissors. In the process of tearing out the image, reaching directly to the fibers themselves, they will need to be carefully trimmed using nail scissors. If you try to tear the paper with your own hands, the fibers may break incorrectly and go in the wrong direction. Fibers may also be pulled out of the paper surface, ruining the image.
Learning to glue rice paper
Having received the image you need, the next step is to paste it. Before doing this, be sure to:
- degreasing the surface of the selected glass or ceramic product;
- priming the metal surface;
- sanding
Don't forget to take care of the background on which the rice paper will be glued. If you have chosen a thin material, then keep in mind that the base on which it will be glued may be visible. To obtain a more defined image, the area of the applied pattern is painted over with acrylic paint light shade. When working with surfaces made of wood or glass, you will need to try on the selected pattern before you start gluing it. Doing this will help you assess tone. A more impressive image can be obtained on a colored background.
After the preparatory work, all that remains is to choose the appropriate gluing technology.
You can use varnish for these purposes. This is done as follows: the drawing must be applied to the plane and coated with acrylic varnish with a brush with a soft structure. In this case, you need to move from the central part to the borders. This is the most quick way, suitable for gluing images at the last stage of decoupage.
The next method of fixation is with glue. It is similar to the previous method. In addition, you can use a glue stick. In this case, the plane is coated with such a device, the pattern is pressed, and a roller is passed over it. After letting the glue dry, the motif is secured with acrylic varnish. Varnish applied in several layers will help fix the image more securely.
Another method of attaching rice paper is using water. To do this, you need to moisten the drawing with water with a brush, moving from its central part to the borders. Next, we apply the motif to the product. After the water has evaporated, the image is coated with glue or fixed with varnish. This method has its advantages; with its help you can determine the location of the drawing, periodically changing its location. This technique is best suited for gluing several paper motifs when there is no strictly defined area for the selected images.
Thus, you were able to verify that using rice paper in decoupage will help decorate the selected product no worse than using special napkins. This material is much more convenient to use, and you can work with it a little less carefully. In addition, an extra drop of water or careless movement of the brush will not damage the image. The only time-consuming aspect is the careful extraction of the selected motif from rice paper, taking into account its fibrous structure. We hope that the recommendations given in our article will help you better understand the advantages of using such paper for decoupage work, which will allow you to create original and unique products with your own hands.
Decorate the tray with rice paper
Having studied the theoretical part of our lesson today, let's move on to practice. As you already know, decoupage helps us in short terms decorate selected products with various kinds of images that do not require drawing. For such a process, either special napkins or paper made from rice fibers or rice are used.
In work, rice paper for decoupage works has a number of advantages: it does not get wet from the use of glue and does not give wrinkles when gluing to the selected surface. The different thicknesses of this material fit perfectly on objects that have a spherical shape. When fixing rice cards with glue, they must be placed on the product selected for decoration and coated with glue on top of the applied image. The drawing is extracted from the rice card by tearing out the plot. As a result, we have an image with torn edges that blend perfectly with the overall background of the product.
This master class will show you the technology of decorating a tray using rice card.
Before we start decoupaging the tray, let's figure out what materials and tools will be useful to you for this. So, to decorate the selected item, prepare:
- rice card;
- MDF tray;
- primer;
- acrylic paints;
- PVA glue;
- decoupage varnish;
- sanding sponge with two sides;
- palette;
- brushes (one round and one flat);
- a brush, also called a flute (needed for varnishing);
- sea sponge.
First of all, you need to prime the prepared tray with acrylic primer. Since a tray made of MDF is used for this decoupage, such material does not need to be additionally sanded. This is done after the primer has dried.
In the prepared palette, you will need to mix the colors with which you will create the background for the rice card. Due to the fact that rice card is a fairly thin material, choose a light background for the product.
At the next stage, you need to take a card and tear out the motif you need from it with your own hands. In this master class, it represents a fourth of the entire material. After this, the resulting drawing is tried on the tray and, if necessary, unnecessary parts are removed.
Having done everything preparatory work, proceed to pasting the motif. First, spread the image on a tray. After this, moisten the brush with glue and gently smooth the rice paper, moving from the middle of the motif to its borders. Let the glue dry.
Areas where there is no pattern are painted on using a round brush.
At this stage, the tray with decoupage looks like this:
Now, take a sea sponge previously soaked in water (this will make it softer), squeeze it out and, with such a semi-dry material, walk along the board, using several types of golden-colored paint.
In a similar way, process the bottom of the decorated tray.
At the final stage, all you have to do is cover the entire surface with a special decoupage varnish. As a result, in a fairly short period of time, you will get a unique product with a wonderful design.
Due to the variety of images offered by manufacturers printed on rice paper, you have a wide field for creativity using the decoupage technique. Choose the motifs you like and decorate with them a variety of interior items that will bring a special zest to your home.
Be sure to try it on own experience Make sure that this material is easy to use, and you will be able to use it with enviable frequency in the decoration of any products.
At the end of our article, we offer you a fascinating video lesson in which an experienced craftswoman explains in detail and demonstrates the technology of decoupage of a cutting board using rice paper. Here, you can see for yourself how easy it is to use such material.
Video: Detailed lesson on decoupage cutting board
Using rice paper, you can easily decorate any surface because it follows the shape of the object very well. Working with rice paper, unlike ordinary napkins, is much easier, since it is well saturated with glue and varnish and, at the same time, more durable than napkins, it does not tear and is easier to stick. As an example of working with rice paper, Krestik has prepared for you this master class on decoupage of a wooden shelf for spices. As you may have guessed, the key material used will be rice paper.
The materials you will need are:
- acrylic primer
- varnish (glue) for decoupage
- acrylic varnish (glossy or matte)
- sandpaper
- acrylic paints
- brushes, sponges
- rice paper
- wooden shelf
Let's prepare the surface of the shelf. Let's go over it with sandpaper and remove all the irregularities. Using a wide brush, apply a layer of acrylic primer and leave to dry.
At this time, prepare pieces of rice paper. We take plain paper as the main background layer. brown and carefully manually tear out a piece of the shape we need.
From another napkin we also carefully tear out the fragments of the drawing that we will use in our work.
Do not throw away those extra pieces of rice paper of any size, even very small ones, that remain after we tear out the main fragment. All of them will be useful to us for registration in the future.
Our primer layer has dried and now we begin to glue the brown rice paper to the entire front surface of the shelf.
Information useful for beginners in decoupage! Try varnish (glue) for decoupage. It is very convenient because it simultaneously glues and forms a varnished surface, which does not require additional varnish between layers.
Let everything dry and prepare the second piece of rice paper. Since the paper is thicker and its edges can stand out strongly on the finished surface, we go over them with zero-grade sandpaper. We sand the very edge of the paper very carefully, in one direction towards the edge, so as not to damage the entire fragment. In this case, the edges will be invisible.
Then we glue this fragment to the selected place with the same varnish (glue) for decoupage. We glue the remaining small pieces that did not need to be thrown away onto the remaining surface in random order. Let it dry and select desired color paints for partial surface painting.
To get the marble texture of the main space, use a sponge to go over the surface of the shelf, with the exception of the main fragment. The result was small stains, like on marble.
When everything is completely dry, coat it with acrylic varnish in two layers. We paint the back wall suitable color acrylic paint and also varnish.
If you are just starting to master decoupage and have difficulty gluing napkins, switch to rice paper. Once you gain experience, try working with napkins.
