Double cross set. Cross-shaped set of loops with a thickened edge with knitting needles "Bulgarian beginning"
Many knitters like to use a special Bulgarian beginning in their work - a type of loop that allows them to make the edge of the product more beautiful and sophisticated. But not all beginning craftswomen know how to make such loops. To do this, you need to learn how to make a cross-shaped set of loops with knitting needles, which will allow you to complement the product with an interesting ending. Recently, this type of loop can be used not only to decorate knitted items, but also for ordinary knitted blouses. But in this master class we will talk about how such simple types Even beginners can make loops.
If the product begins or ends with a viscous elastic band, then using the edge using a cross-shaped set of buttonholes, the result can be very original pattern. In addition, the implementation of such weaves allows the product to look neatly finished, which is important when creating a unique and beautiful masterpiece.
Learning to process the edge
When it gets cold, all people tend to dress in warmer and more voluminous clothes, but women want to look irresistible and attractive in any weather. Nowadays, things that are made independently are very popular, especially knitted ones. These include sweaters, tunics, jumpers, sleeveless vests, vests and much more. In this master class we will learn how to make a cross pattern with double thread. It is not difficult to complete the ego, but you need to be careful and follow all the steps described that will help you cope with the task. This method of making loops is quite ancient, but at the same time it allows the product to look interesting.
Let's start knitting. To do this, we fold the thread into two and place it on the thumb, as indicated in the photo, and then stretch it between the thumb and index finger. To make knitting convenient, we hold the hanging threads with the remaining two fingers. And with two knitting needles we pick up the thread that comes from the index finger.
Now we need to pull the thread into a loop, as when we have a regular set of buttonholes. We take a thread folded in two and wrap it around the thumb, and the ends of the thread should be located on the palm and then press this end with the little finger and ring finger. Next, you need to pass the tool under the double thread. Then we pick up the thread that comes from the index finger. Remove your finger and then tighten the loop. We insert the knitting needle into the buttonhole near the thumb and tighten the thread that goes near the index finger. Now we put the thread around the thumb, but so that the free thread lies on the side of the hand. Again, using knitting needles, you need to pick up the thread coming from your index finger, and then you need to place the knitting needles under the front wall of the thread - the loop that is located near the thumb. All that remains is to pull the yarn into the buttonhole. We release the thumb, the buttonhole is tightened.
When knitting this pattern, you need to alternate step five with step nine.
A very important point is that when casting on these loops, the free double thread should first be behind the thumb, and then in front. Only taking into account this alternation of the direction of the threads will you get a smooth edge of the product.
When knitting such a pattern, you can use not only a double thread, but also a triple one. Thanks to this, the pattern will become more voluminous. Just like with the double thread, we knit it with a thread that will be folded three times. Such patterns can be decorated with beautiful beads, which will add more femininity and tenderness. Next, you can decorate with interesting threads with sparkles or, if double or triple, then combine threads with different colors. In any case, when knitting this pattern, it is necessary to change the directions of the thread and then you will get a corresponding pattern that will decorate any product.

Here is a video with which you can learn how to knit a cross-shaped set of loops yourself.
Cross casting on to create straight stitches using knitting needles is a very complex method of casting on. Beginner needlewomen are unlikely to cope with it, because even experienced knitters do not succeed in such a set the first time. It can also be noted that the cross-shaped set requires attention and patience.
Learning to cast on crosswise stitches with knitting needles: individual knitting methods
All knitters are absolutely in different ways hold the knitting needles and thread when knitting. The hand can be placed on top, while covering the knitting needles and loops on them. You can also hold the knitting needles like a handle. Abroad they use the third method: they clamp the left knitting needle with any in an accessible way, sometimes they even rest against the belt.
There is also a difference in the way the thread is held when knitting. When the needlewoman holds the thread in her left hand, this method is called continental, and if she holds the yarn in her right hand, then this method is called “English”.
It is worth paying attention to the direction of knitting. Knitting is divided into right-handed and left-handed knitting. The former knit the fabric in rotating rows from right to left, while the latter knit in the opposite direction - from left to right. There is also another way of knitting, when one row is knitted in the standard direction, and the second row is knitted in the opposite direction, while the knitting does not rotate 180 degrees, as with the usual method.
There are two main ways to cast on loops:
- From a long thread
- From a short thread (from the beginning of the ball)
For the first method, you need to unwind a long piece of working thread. Having measured the required length, you need to make the first and all subsequent loops. The disadvantage of such a set is that the end of the thread may not be enough to set all the calculated loops. Sometimes the end of the thread remains very long, but this can be easily solved with scissors. When casting on from a long thread, the turns are thrown onto one knitting needle, but it is best to use two knitting needles at once, this way you can ensure that the loops are not pulled together. When casting, you can use two skeins of yarn. In this case, the thread from the first ball will fix the thread from the second ball.
For the second method, leave the end of the thread very small - up to 10 cm. At this distance from the edge, make a sliding loop and put it on a knitting needle. Further work continues from this initial loop.
It’s worth stopping at this important point set of loops, as methods. The loops can be cast on an additional needle, on a thread that is removed after the first knitted row, on a thread of a different color from the working thread. Or you can use a crochet hook: cast on a chain of chain stitches with waste thread, and then pull out working stitches from it onto a knitting needle.
Cross-shaped set of loops. The cross-shaped cast-on refers to the first cast-on method: from the long end of the thread. In order not to make a mistake with the length of the end, it is necessary to make a calculated set row. That is, measure the end of a certain length, cast on the loops, and then undo them, having first counted them. This way, you can have an idea of the number of loops that can be cast on from a particular end of the thread.
The cross-shaped set is considered one of the oldest methods. It is used when the edge of the product does not start with an elastic band, but the main pattern is immediately knitted. Ideal for starting knitting 2x2 rib. The edge turns out to be very smooth, neat, and at the same time quite plastic. Also, this typesetting edge is distinguished by the fact that it gives the product beautiful view. If you want the edge to hold its shape well, you need to make a set with a double thread.
There is one mandatory rule when using a cross cast-on: after it, a row is always knitted with purl stitches, and it is considered not the front row, but the first purl row.
Carrying out the set.To perform the cast-on row in question, you need to throw the thread from the ball over the index finger of your left hand, then bring it to the thumb, fold it in half so that the length is equal to twice the length of the cast-on row. Next you need to make a loop around thumb and leave the end of the thread there.
Wrap the resulting double thread around your thumb, while holding the starting thread with your right hand. During these actions, the thread from the ball is on the index finger and goes to the knitting needle. You need to pull out the loop, slip it off your thumb and tighten it on the working tool.
Then turn the double thread around your thumb. The thread from the ball is in the same position as in the previous step. Pull the loop, slip it off your thumb and tighten.
The following stages of work repeat the previous two paragraphs of the description.
You can use another method, a visual lesson on which will be attached at the very end of the article. Each needlewoman makes her own choice and uses the method that she quickly got used to.

In this collection of video lessons, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the different feeds of a cross-shaped set of loops.
A cross-shaped set of loops (also called the Bulgarian “beginning”) is usually used when knitting begins with the main pattern immediately from the edge of the product. But if you are going to knit a 2x2 elastic band, you can safely use a cross-shaped set - you will get an original edge. With a cross-shaped cast-on, the edge of the product looks neat, and the thickened weave of the threads allows such a cast-on edge to simultaneously perform a decorative function.
1. Throw the thread coming from the ball over the index finger of the left hand and then bring the thread to the thumb. Fold the thread in half, the length of the thread is equal to twice the length of the cast-on edge, and make a loop around the thumb, the end of the thread hanging by the thumb. Make the first loop as usual: insert the knitting needles into the loop on the thumb, grab the thread coming from the index finger, pull it out of the loop, slip the loop off the thumb and tighten the loop on the knitting needle.
2. Draw a double thread around the thumb of your left hand according to the photo, hold the starting thread with your right hand. The thread that comes from the ball is draped over the index finger and leads to the knitting needle. Pull out the loop, slip it off your thumb and tighten it on the knitting needle.
3. After this, turn the double thread around the thumb, i.e. circle it so that the free end of the thread this time turns out to be the back wall of the loop being formed. The thread that comes from the ball is draped over the index finger and leads to the knitting needle. Pull out the loop, slip it off your thumb and tighten it on the knitting needle.
The photo shows several cast-on edge loops. In the next row (purl) after casting on the stitches, purl all the stitches. Then knit with the desired pattern. If you need an elastic band right away, then start knitting an elastic band in the next row after casting on the stitches (purl).
The cross-shaped cast-on stitches are made using double thread, with the length of the thread being equal to twice the length of the cast-on edge.
Step 1
According to the drawing, place a single thread coming from the ball over the index finger of the left hand and bring it to the thumb. Fold the thread in half and make a loop around the thumb, with the end of the thread hanging down at the thumb.Step 2
Make the first loop in the usual way: insert the knitting needles into the loop on the thumb, grab the thread coming from the index finger and pull it out of the loop. Slip the loop off your thumb and tighten the loop on the knitting needles.Wrap the double thread around the thumb of your left hand according to the picture, holding the starting thread with your right hand. A single thread coming from the ball is draped over the index finger and leads to the knitting needle. Pull out the loop (see direction of the arrow), slip it off the thumb and tighten it on the knitting needle.
Step 3
Place the double thread around your thumb and pull the loop in the direction of the arrow. Slip the loop off your thumb and tighten it on the knitting needle. Alternately perform loops according to step 2 and step 3.Step 4
This is what a series of loops cast on in a cross pattern looks like.

Which methods of casting on loops do you use for knitting? Let's diversify our work by changing the usual regular set of loops to something new. For example, let's try to use a cross-shaped set of loops, which looks like a thickened edge and creates a beautiful additional volume and texture of the edge of the product.
A cross-shaped set of loops is also called Bulgarian beginning. Maybe for some this name will be more familiar, because our great-grandmothers knitted with Bulgarian knitting needles. Set of thick edges with knitting needles is formed by folding the thread, which is picked up on knitting needles, into two or three folds, depending on the type of yarn and the desire of the knitter. This is enough to get a thick inlaid edge.
Casting loops in a cross pattern is not that difficult, especially when you have a video at hand that shows and tells you in detail how to do it. Therefore, it is better to see once how to make a cross-shaped cast-on with knitting needles than to talk about it.
So, today you will see three master classes:
1. Video from the "Crochet and knitting" channel, which talks about a cross-shaped set of loops with a thickened edge when folding the thread in half.
2. Video from the channel "Knitting. Knitting lessons for beginners with Larisa Chmyh" on how to cast on loops with a Bulgarian beginning with a thickened edge, and use a thread in three folds.
3. A cross-shaped set of loops or a Bulgarian beginning without a thickened edge with thread in one fold from the channel "Knitting SHERURUKOM".
