Painter's hat made from newspaper
This is a product familiar from childhood. Externally, this hat resembles a pirates’ cocked hat. It is quite possible that when you learn how to make a hat from painter's paper, you will put in a little effort, bring it to perfection and make it the main attribute of a pirate carnival costume.
Let's get back to the main purpose of this hat. Why is a hat classified as painting work? In the process of decorating indoors or outdoors, dyes can get on your hair; if you don’t have a special hat, then this will do just fine. You will give a second life old newspaper, and it’s not such a shame to throw away the product after use.

Carnival hat cylinder made of cardboard
Is carnival coming soon? Will your child be dressed as a magician or a gentleman from London? Or maybe she will be a real lady who cannot go out without an elegant miniature hat? Then you definitely need to learn how to make a cylinder hat out of paper. Of course, plain paper will not work for this job. The material should be denser, it is better to use cardboard.
What else is needed for this job:
- the main material (cardboard) is selected according to the theme of the future costume;
- pencil for making marks;
- adhesive tape;
- fleece;
- To create a beautiful shimmer, use varnish and a wide brush.
Before you make a paper hat with your own hands according to the instructions, you need to prepare for the upcoming work. It is impossible to make a top hat without measurements, of course, unless it is a miniature hat to decorate your hairstyle.
You are required to:
- measure the circumference of the child's head with a sewing meter;
- think about what height of the finished product you need; making a very high cylinder is not recommended, it can cause discomfort when worn.
Now we’ll explain step by step how to make a paper hat with your own hands:
For a spectacular result, coat the cylinder with varnish and leave until completely dry. Now you know how to make a cylinder hat out of paper with your own hands. But this option is suitable for little gentlemen, but what about ladies?
Small elegant top hat for girls
The following site instructions will tell you how to make a paper hat that will decorate any holiday outfit. It is attached to the hairstyle using hairpins or a hoop. This accessory can be used not only by children, but also by adult girls. Such mini cylinders can be a good solution for photo shoots.
Prepare before work:
- thick cardboard;
- glue stick and gun;
- ruler;
- corrugated paper;
- paper for working using the quilling method;
- braid;
- scissors.
Before manufacturing, as in the previous version of the cylinder, we need to decide on the dimensions. There is no need to measure the circumference of the child’s head; the work can be done “by eye”. For those who are engaged in such creativity for the first time, we recommend using standard sizes, we will indicate them during the work.
And now the instructions on how to make a miniature paper hat:
Externally, the cylinder may seem ready. It needs to be decorated. We use corrugated paper and quilling techniques. After practice, you can indulge in fantasy.
(Step 3)
- We cut out a circle from paper, it should be smaller than the base, and apply it to the cap. We wrap the excess part inside and secure it with core glue. We decorate the top of the mini cylinder with braid;
- We make flowers. Use paper that matches the color of the hat. Use a special stick to twist the strips. Form flowers. Use the same principle to make the leaves. Glue the resulting products to the cylinder.
- To prevent the finished accessory from falling off your head, attach it to a hoop, you can use an elastic band or braid.
This is just an example of work, you can make the product any way you want, with larger or smaller margins and decorated as you wish
Cap in technology
So, you have already learned how to make a hat from painting paper, how to make a carnival top hat. Now let's look at another product that is made using the origami technique - this is a cap.
Such a thing is indispensable both when relaxing in nature and in the country while working under the scorching sun, and children will simply be delighted with such an attribute.
There are several manufacturing options. We will look at each of them.
Classic cap
Let's start with the classic model. For work you will need a square sheet, preferably with a large size. Let's start adding:
- Fold the square into a triangle. We do this at an angle of 45 degrees.
- We turn the workpiece over to face itself with the wide part. Fold the corner located at the top downwards of the formed figure.
- Now the folded corner needs to be raised. Elements located on the sides must be placed on top of each other and pressed to the top of the product. The resulting figure should remind you of a trapezoid.
- Lower one of the parts that is located at the top of the corner side and tuck it under the previously folded layers. Press the workpiece as hard as possible to ensure everything is securely fastened.
- Turn the product over. We fold the remaining part of the corner downwards. We unfold the workpiece from top to bottom. Open the product so that the inside of the cap appears.
- Gently press on the sides of the product to give them shape. We lay the parts on top so that the outline of the cap appears. The corners should “look” at each other.
- At the final stage you need to make a visor. First, fold it up. Then return to the starting position. When performing these steps, leave a few centimeters from the folded line.
Perhaps the instructions on how to make a paper hat using this principle will seem complicated. Not everyone is able to design a product the first time, because the origami technique requires practice. But we are sure that already the second time, you will get an excellent cap, which will take you a few minutes to create in the future.
Square cap
Do you want not just a paper hat, but an original cap? There is nothing simpler, let's design a square cap model. What to do:
- take a sheet of paper, maybe a newspaper;
- fold the sheet to form a triangle, cut off the excess;
- unfold the resulting figure, you should have a line passing through the square;
- fold the workpiece, on the other hand, for the second fold line;
- turn the product upside down;
- We lay each corner downwards;
- turn the product over and repeat the steps;
- if everything was done correctly, you should have a visor, fold it up;
- The last thing you need to do is fold the corners and secure the shape of the cap.
Nothing complicated. Now you are the happy owner of not just a simple, but a homemade paper cap. Using this pattern, even children can be taught to make hats. They will definitely like this kind of work.
A hand-made paper hat can be a wonderful accessory to your baby's outfit. children's event. The accessory is suitable for teenagers for the holidays, and for adults for themed celebrations. Let's look at how to do it.
Adults will not have any particular difficulties in the process of creating a paper hat. In addition, the time spent on making such a headdress will be fun and easy. And the activity itself will be quite exciting and funny; you can involve children in the process. They will happily pick up your idea and learn a new skill.
Paper hat - master class
There are many options for paper crafts, let’s take a look at the simplest, least time-consuming method. Let's look at how to make a hat out of paper. Thanks to the standard set of materials, it is possible to embody any ideas, depending on the flight of fancy.
To make this product you will need:
- plate, glue, pencil
- decorative decorations, paints
- purple ribbon
- scissors, cardboard.
Manufacturing process:
- The hat consists of a brim, a base, and a cylinder. First, cut a strip about 19 centimeters high and a width equal to the circumference of the child’s head.
- It is better to draw the fields with a compass or circle a large lid to make it smooth and beautiful. The dimensions of the small circle must match the width of the cylinder.
- At the top there will be the base of the hat; it is cut out from the bottom circle.
- Please note that the height of the cylinder itself will decrease slightly due to the fact that, due to its height, the brim of the paper hat and the upper base of the cylinder will be attached.
- They are attached as follows: make cuts 0.8 cm high along the upper and lower borders of the cylinder.
- Bend the cuts inward at the top and outward at the bottom and glue the margins and base of the accessory.
All that remains is to take and decorate the finished cylinder; in the image above, a purple satin ribbon is used for decoration. You can show your imagination and do something original.
How to make a hat out of paper?
Nowadays it is fashionable to wear hats even in the summer heat, and some divas complement their look with specially designed headdresses to attract attention. Well then, why not make a small hat for the little fashionista too. After all, even hats made of paper can look remarkable. Especially if they are made with love by mother’s skillful hands.
Tools and materials:
- thick paper, color is not important, depends on preference
- colored paper, scissors
- ribbons for decoration, glitter, glue
- pencil.
Work progress:
- To work, you will need a round surface; again, you can use a lid. But you must first measure the size of the child’s head so that the headdress fits perfectly.
- So, a small hat is made according to the same principle as a cylindrical hat. First, cut out a strip 10-12 centimeters high. Then the circle (see picture above) its diameter should be greater than the diameter of the glued upper “cylinder” by five to 10 centimeters.
- The second circle should match the size of the “cylinder” itself.
- Cut out all the details of the hat.
- At the top and bottom of the “cylinder”, make 0.8 centimeter cuts along the entire circumference, and then bend them.
- Bend it inward at the top; these bends will hold the bottom of the headdress.
- Make outward folds at the bottom and glue the margins to them.
All that remains now is to make flowers to decorate the product, glue ribbons, sparkles, and you can also wrap a ribbon around the hat. You can make a rose on the side using satin ribbon.
Paper pirate hat
If we consider paper crafts in the form of hats for a child for a matinee or at school for a costume party, then a pirate hat is one of best options. Despite the fact that pirates are by no means a positive image. It was the pirates who robbed ships. Next you will see the pattern of the headdress.
Pirate hat pattern:
Materials:
- black paper, pencil
- scissors, golden edging
- skull sticker
- glue.
Manufacturing process:
- Make the pattern directly on black paper according to the template presented above. It will include the following parts: three first parts, two second and one third.
- Now all that remains is to glue the product. To do this, take the second two parts in the form of curved strips and glue them into a cylinder.
- Cut strips at the bottom and top of the cylinder.
- Glue the oval part of the cap to the top part, bending the cut strips of the cylinder inwards.
- Glue the first three parts of the pirate hat to the bottom.
- Finally, glue the sides of the hat brim together.
Now all that remains is to draw or glue the skull and glue the golden border.
Dunno hat made of corrugated paper
Back in the last century, when there were no smartphones and mobile phones, the children watched cartoons on TV. And they were more interested in this than today’s children who love computer games. Then one of the children’s favorite heroes was Dunno, who always found himself in different situations because he lived up to his name. And he had a hat, similar to the hat of modern fairies and wizards. Paper hats of this type can be made in literally twenty minutes if you have all the tools and materials available.

- On another sheet of cardboard we do the same as on the first.
- On this cardboard we draw a smaller circle; it should occupy approximately 3⁄4 of the first circle. We get two circles on a sheet and three on another sheet of cardboard.
- We cut out a circle with a large diameter from the first cardboard, and then make stripes in the form of a fringe up to the first circle.
- Fold the resulting edging inward and set the circle aside.
- From cardboard, cut out a circle with the largest diameter, and then cut out the smallest one located inside.
- Now you make the same fringe, only from a small to a large circle.
- We bend it.
- Cut out the walls of the cylinder from the remaining cardboard. These strips should be the size of the small circle plus a centimeter for gluing.
- We take a sheet with three circles and smooth out its fringe, grease it with glue and lift it up.
- Now you need to put the circle on a cylinder made of cardboard and press them so that they stick together.
- We take a small circle, grease it with glue and put it on the top of the cylinder.
- Give the product some time to dry and start decorating the hat.

Master class:
- Take a standard newspaper spread and bend the closed corners inward, bringing the edges and vertices together.
- Fold the bottom side out twice.
- Bend the locking corners on the reverse side, then bend the planes on both sides towards you, setting the size of the future hat (orientation towards the center determines the universal size).
- The lower plane needs to be bent towards itself along the edges, then the duplicate corners must be bent inward from it, which will need to be wrapped inside the workpiece.
- Turn the package face down, bend a large corner to the bottom edge and tuck it over the side.
- Straighten the workpiece, side corners, tucking it over the sides. Job finished!
Classic hat
Making a paper painter's hat is as easy as making a regular paper boat.
Master class:
- Fold a rectangular sheet of paper in half vertically and then again horizontally.
- Fold the closed tops to the center at a right angle.
- Bend the resulting edges of the sheet upwards, and carefully tuck the free corners inward so that the workpiece takes the form of a triangle.
- Then bring the corners of the base of the formed triangle together so that the result is a square.
- The open corners need to be slightly bent towards the closed top.
- Then bring the side corners of the resulting figure together again.
- Then pull the edges of the formed “sides” in different directions until a cap is formed.
Cap
This is one of the simplest headdresses that you can create with your own hands. Using the step-by-step instructions below, it will only take a few minutes to make.
Master class:
- Fold the rectangular sheet in half, bend the upper closed corners of the resulting fold inward so that they come together face to face, vertex to vertex.
- Then you should turn the top “side” up twice and turn the workpiece over.
- Bend the planes towards you on both sides, setting the required size.
- Fold the bottom edge of the workpiece towards you so that there is no overlap on the protruding folds, then unfold the edge and bend its vertices along the intended line of the formed fold.
- Bend the bottom plane upward twice to completely cover the folds made earlier.
- Turn the workpiece over and bend the top of the roll downwards so as to align it with the base of the workpiece.
- Tuck the fold over the side of the package and straighten the product.
Pirate cocked hat
Below is a diagram of a wide-brimmed hat pattern, which can easily be turned not only into the headdress of a pirate, but also a musketeer. You can make a hat from either fabric or paper (cardboard). The headdress is designed for a head circumference of 50-55 centimeters. You should duplicate the fields if you decide to print the pattern immediately in color in order to glue them together, making the back and front sides immediately black.
You need to cut out the parts of the hat along the black solid line, the dotted line indicates the fold points. The dotted line marks the limitations of the places where the parts are glued; there is no need to make bends along it.
Chef's hat
To make a classic chef's hat you will need a little time and several types of paper.
Tools and materials:
- cardboard;
- parchment material (white);
- double-sided tape (adhesive tape);
- scissors;
- ruler.
Master class:
- Cut a strip 5 centimeters wide from cardboard. The length of the strip should correspond to the circumference of the head.
- Measure out the parchment paper. It is necessary to take a segment twice the length of the prepared base.
- Lay the sheet out on a flat surface and gather it up a little, creating folds.
- One edge of the parchment sheet needs to be glued to the base so that it takes up half the length of the cardboard.
- Attach the second border of the gathered parchment with double-sided tape to the remaining portion of the base.
- Glue the cardboard together to form a circle, straighten the top of the cap a little and align it where folds need to be left.
- To close the gaps on the sides, parchment should be glued to the base in these places.
Party hat
Tools and materials:
- cardboard;
- scissors;
- thick colored paper;
- thin elastic band (ribbons);
- decorations (feathers, appliqués, corrugated paper).
Master class:
- Cut out a stamp from cardboard for the future cap (the template is shown in the figure).
- Attach the template to colored paper, trace the contours, cut out the blank.
- Roll up the workpiece, securing it with a “lock”. The cap is ready!
- Equip the headdress with an elastic band or tape; the size should be universal and hold the cap tightly on the head.
- Decorate the cap as desired.
Samurai helmet
Origami can be folded from almost any paper. To make a Chinese samurai helmet, both a regular newspaper and an A4 sheet are suitable.
Tools and materials:
- scissors;
- paper.
Master class:
- Using scissors, cut the paper into a perfect square.
- Fold it diagonally, then turn the resulting triangle into a square again; to do this, just bend the sharp corners to the top.
- Then bend the lower corners of the “front” side to the opposite corner.
- Bend the top peaks outward to form protruding “ears.”
- Turn the lower corner of the upper plane upward slightly, overlapping the bends of the workpiece, then turn it down to fix the shape.
- Then turn the cap over to bend the “extra” corner from the back side, up and unfold the product. Job finished!
Cylinder
Tools and materials:
- pencil;
- plate;
- glue;
- scissors;
- thin cardboard.
Master class:
- Cut the cardboard intended for the top of the hat into 2 identical strips (their width will determine the height of the future cylinder).
- Measure the circumference of your head and divide the resulting number by 2. Thus, the required length of each strip becomes known.
- Make an allowance of no more than 2 centimeters on the gluing line, cut off the excess cardboard.
- Glue together 2 pieces of paper overlapping along the transverse side to form a long strip of cardboard.
- Roll the formed strip into a cylinder (color side out) and overlap its transverse edges.
- Make cuts about 2 centimeters deep at a distance of 2 centimeters from each other along the conditionally lower side of the future cylinder.
- Take cardboard intended for the brim of a hat, place a soup plate on it and trace the outlines with a pencil.
- Place the formed cylinder in the center of the circle and trace its outline, then cut out the resulting “donut”.
- Place the cylinder on the table with the cuts down, apply glue to each element or use double-sided tape for this.
- Place the “donut” on the cylinder and press it so that the glue sets well.
- To hide the gluing areas, cut out an additional circle and attach it exactly to the top surface of the margins.
- To decorate the hat, you can use any contrasting paper ribbon.
Fan hat
For a little football fan you can make an original and sports cap from corrugated paper.
Tools and materials:
- corrugated paper (for the base);
- 2 ribbons of corrugated paper in a contrasting color;
- 1 tape made of thin cardboard or thick paper;
- braid or lace;
- glue;
- decorations (paper applique).
Master class:
- Fold a sheet of corrugated paper in half, iron it along the fold and unfold it again.
- Apply a thin strip of glue directly along the fold line; it is advisable to use thick glue.
- Place a strip of cardboard over the glue. The top edge of the tape should exactly coincide with the fold line of the base, in addition, you should leave a little protruding paper on the sides of the cardboard so that you can then fold it over and attach it to the tape.
- Apply a thin strip of glue along one edge of the paper tape.
- Glue it along the workpiece along the top edge so that the clean edge (without glue) coincides with the border of the base.
- Bend the bottom edge of the workpiece upward and attach a second strip of corrugated paper to it.
- Using scissors, create a fringe along the top edge, catching both the ribbon and the base.
- To create a lapel, you need to wrap the bottom border of the workpiece inward 1-2 times to the width of the cardboard tape that is inside.
- Wrap the workpiece around the head with the flap side facing out, measure and cut off the excess of the prepared base, leaving a small allowance.
- Fasten the future hat in the lapel area with glue or a stapler.
- Place a hat on your head and gather its upper part into a bun.
- Tie the formed bun with braid (lace) and fluff out the fringe.
- The cap lapel can be decorated using paper applique and other decorative elements.
Hat from a plate
Tools and materials:
- paper plates;
- paints, markers, pencils;
- scissors.
Master class:
- You need to decide on the shape of the future hat, fold the plate in half.
- Draw the outline of the desired element and cut it out with scissors. The figure will be symmetrical, since the workpiece was folded in half.
- Straighten the hat.
- Color the headdress and add jewelry.
Hat with brim
Tools and materials:
- newspaper;
- scissors.
Master class:
- Cut the newspaper into the shape of a regular square, fold it diagonally, then in half and in half again, and thus make a mark along the bends.
- Return the workpiece to the stage of a square folded in half.
- Fold the closed corners inward, without connecting their folds to the edges of the workpiece.
- Open the fresh folds from the inside and press them flat.
- Turn the product face down and bend the edges towards you along the previously marked fold lines.
- Bend the “sides” on each side towards you, straighten the workpiece and push the dome a little. The hat is ready!
