How to make a hat from wallpaper. How to make a beautiful hat with your own hands - types, photo ideas, step-by-step instructions
Making a headdress like a hat out of paper is very simple! Making this craft will not take much of your time. In addition, you can involve your child in such a fun process.
To make a paper hat, we will need the following materials and several tools:
- dense colored paper or cardboard (any shade);
- scissors;
- glue stick or ordinary PVA;
- decorative tape;
- rosette made of satin ribbon.
From a sheet of colored cardboard (A4 format), you need to cut out a circle.
You can make a circle using a compass by tracing any round-shaped object or create a freehand sketch, as in this case. Next, the center of the circle needs to be cut out.
The hole size should be small, as in the photo. Leave the cut out part, we will need it to create the top part of the hat.
Make a cut on either side of the workpiece.
Apply glue to the back of the workpiece.
Now glue the cut and wait a bit until the glue dries and the workpiece is securely fixed.
The brim of our hat has acquired the necessary shape.
While the glue dries, we need to cut out a strip from cardboard (or a different shade).
Make small cuts along its edges.
Then bend them, lift them up on one side and down on the other.
Leave this part until the glue has completely dried. Afterwards, apply glue to the lower part of the workpiece.
Now we pass it through the hole and glue it to the brim of the hat.
This is what should happen.
If necessary, the edges can be trimmed by cutting off excess cardboard. Now you can start decorating the craft. Attach a thin, decorative ribbon to the base of the hat, making several turns.
Attach its tip with glue. In the same way, attach it to the top of the hat.
First, attach a bow to the craft.
Now, in the center of the bow, glue a rose.
That's it, the paper hat is ready!

As you can see, making a paper hat with your own hands is not at all difficult!
Today, hats of all styles are back in fashion. But what if you can’t find the right model to suit your taste? There is a solution - we will tell you how to make a hat at home with your own hands.
Use our tips - and you will be provided with hats for your wardrobe, holiday celebration, masquerade, party and even wedding! The process itself is very simple and exciting.
Ideas for hats and materials from which they can be made
Making hats from scrap and artistic materials is very exciting. creative process, which will give you great pleasure from the result. Everything can work out for you if you carefully decide on the choice of style and design!
Firstly, you should choose high-quality and optimal material. And the highlight of any headdress will always be an additional element. This can be a fringe sewn along the edge, a ribbon edging, lace, appliques, beads and pearls, buttons, artificial flowers and even small birds, metal figurines, toys, and decorative fittings.
Paper hats
Paper products will require material of different densities and suitable color. It is better to choose large-format paper, especially if you plan to create a large, voluminous hat - for example, a Panama hat. This product can be disposable if you do not plan to wear it for more than a few days. It is convenient to make such a headdress on the road, on the beach, on a hike, when there are no conditions for sewing, and covering your head from the wind and sun is very important.
If you find a suitable sheet of thick paper (for example, Whatman paper), we can say that the trick is in the bag. That is, we immediately begin drawing the drawing according to the head measurements and then - depending on the design. The main thing is that there is enough material for sufficiently wide margins and additional details.
Cardboard hats
Cardboard is a cheap and convenient material from which it is easy to construct almost any type of headdress. It is more practical than paper; it can be covered with fabric, fur, mesh or colored film, and painted.
Cardboard makes great hats for carnivals and parties. Cutting a cardboard headdress requires nothing more than attention and a good pattern.
Fabric hats
Panama hats, fedoras, felt and fur hats – the choice of varieties is quite large. You can cut a knitted hat if you don't know how or don't like to knit. The simplest option is classic beret. It can be sewn from felt, leather, knitwear, tweed and even silk.
A strictly defined business hat requires attention to cut and precise measurements. But it can also be made from improvised means - update an old hat by covering it with new fabric, add decorations to it - and now it will no longer be recognizable!
You can also make a winter hat with protective “ears” from fabric, and this does not have to be earflaps. A classic women's hat may have spare compartments with warming flaps.
Types of hats
At the peak of popularity today is the fedora hat. This is a soft felt hat with a wide brim that goes well with a coat and dress, sunglasses, and adds elegance even to girls in jeans! Sewing such a model yourself is as easy as shelling pears.
Carnival hats
Carnival, party, happening, flash mob, corporate evening or Halloween are days when you can have a lot of fun and surprise everyone with your unusual look.
A carnival classic is the witch's hat with a huge brim and a high, pointed crown. Take cardboard or a frame onto which you stretch black fabric with a veil - the image of the witch is ready! You can also dress up as a fairy or dryad by decorating your regular hat with artificial leaves, flowers, fruits or other natural symbols.
What about the male gender? The image of the dashing Jack Sparrow, the famous pirate captain from Hollywood films, is now popular. In this case everything is simple. Jack's typical headdress is a bandana with beads, to which various intricate "amulets" made of pebbles and "gems" can be sewn or fastened.
Another option is the cocked hat of a 17th century pirate. Fold the plastic cardboard accordingly, fasten the margins with a stapler or needle and thread, glue on a feather or brooch - in front of you is a detail of the toilet of not only a pirate, but also Baron Munchausen
Don't forget also about papier-mâché animal masks and Venetian images!
Children's hats
If you have a child (especially if there is more than one), then every parent may face the following situation: an original carnival costume to the matinee! And the parents are in a panic, because often they don’t have extra money set aside for such one-time new clothes, but they still need a suit. And your baby will be sad if his friends in the kindergarten group or classmates come in bright and cheerful costumes, and he alone will be deprived of this pleasure. Don't be discouraged if your child's wishes go beyond the range of stores and your budget.
Most original costume in any case it will only be homemade. And the highlight will be, of course, the hat!
Does your son want to be a hussar or a musketeer? The main “trick” of the image of a fencer-musketeer, of course, is an elegant hat with a feather and curved brim. It can be made from a piece of felt, cardboard or papier-mâché.
Feather - artificial or natural, which is found in the house. It can be painted in an unusual color to match the costume - a musketeer's cape. And for a hussar, you can build a simple and comfortable shako with a visor made of cardboard, covered with fabric. Don’t forget to glue the “regalia” onto the hussar’s hat - a twisted braid with a tassel, a plait with fur imitating a sultan. The little hussar will hit the girls at the ball in the heart!
There are many more options for a girl - from the crown of a little princess or a fairy-tale princess to a witch in a huge wide-brimmed hat.
Wedding or evening hats
Wedding celebrations are the day when the bride receives maximum attention. Only the sparkle of loving eyes and good taste can make a newlywed the most beautiful and elegant in the world, but an additional factor can be an unusual hat!
The modern bride prefers small, compact, symbolic hats that give the impression of a hairpin or brooch. This format is convenient in its miniature size and perfectly highlights the makeup, dress, and beauty of the bride herself. Making such a miniature hairpin hat is very easy. Make a small version of a small hat out of cardboard, cover it with white fabric, add beads, pearls, rhinestones or artificial (or even natural!) flowers. This will be a unique piece!
For an evening celebration, to the theater, or the opera, you can wear a pillbox hat. It's simple and very nice option, which goes well with evening dress, suit.
Men's hats
A classic Stetson on your head, an umbrella-cane and a tweed suit - and a real movie hero leads you by the arm. To make your own Stetson, you will have to master working with felt, but there are always analogues that will be useful to your friend, husband or boyfriend.
A sophisticated and sophisticated top hat, handcrafted from quality materials, will be a very inspiring gift for a spouse, lover, friend or colleague. Indeed, is it possible to find a similar gift so simply and easily somewhere else? This is a real return to the 19th century, which would be appropriate at a classical ball, in the theater, at a masquerade, and some wear such hats every day - for example, supporters of the steampunk style.
Panama hats
Summer season, vacation or heat is covering the city - in all these cases a nice Panama hat is definitely required. It will protect against harmful ultraviolet rays and help prevent dry hair (which, among other things, fades in the sun). A Panama hat can be made from straw or knitted or crocheted. Sewing from fabric is possible from leftovers from other products. Let's say you have cut out a new sundress for yourself for the summer, but the fabric remains. Make a scarf, Panama hat or bandana out of it - and the whole set is ready.
How to make a stylish hat with your own hands
If a creative impulse has struck you and you are ready to make a hat, do not be afraid of experiments and first trial options with errors and miscalculations. The main thing is to start, and then your hand and eye will tell you how to cut and sew correctly. Understand your preferences, check the size of the person who will wear the hat - and go ahead!
Explore your stash of fabric, scraps, different decorative beads or unexpected details that can be placed as decoration on a hat. The combinations can be the most surprising. A huge selection of decorative fittings is now on sale. Use ribbons to decorate the crown, use contrast stitching on a machine - it’s very beautiful! Hats with brooches and lace look very advantageous if used sparingly.
You must be able to wear a headdress - boldly, confidently, in the appropriate environment, and then it will delight you and those around you with its individuality and beauty.
We hope that our ideas and suggestions will help you diversify your wardrobe and add some zest to it with the help of an elegant and unique hat.
If you want to further improve your hat-making skills, then there are numerous shops with handicraft supplies at your service. In them you can buy the most different materials according to texture and composition, patterns and draw mass interesting ideas by design. Photo examples of original homemade hats
Recently in our little son’s kindergarten they announced to us that there would be a Hat Competition and parents and their children needed to prepare a beautiful, original hat. I must admit that at first this idea did not arouse my enthusiasm at all, but, to my surprise, a day before the scheduled event, I was simply overwhelmed by a creative wave.)))
About 3 hours of work and in the morning my son tried on this hat:
We called her
Artist's hat.
How to make a hat with your own hands.
I really wanted to make an unusual hat that was not so simple as the usual top hat and at the same time purposefully suitable for a boy. I was twirling my favorite pencil bookmark in my hands and... just like in the movie, it dawned on me! And the work began to boil.
To begin with, I stocked up material:
- thick cardboard
- white cardboard
- thick A3 sheets of white and green colors
- single-sided colored paper
- pencil
- glue
- scissors
- cheerful coloring book with animals and colored borders
Stages of making an artist's hat with your own hands:
1. Cut a thick sheet of A3 paper in half and glued it together. I used them to measure the size of my son’s head and glued the cylinder together. On its lower side I made equal cuts along the entire circumference and folded them.
From white cardboard I cut out a circle with the diameter of a cylinder and with additional loops around the circumference:
2. I cut out the brim of the future hat from thick cardboard. I traced the dimensions of the cylinder in the center and cut out a circle.
3. Assemble the base of the hat. We pass the cardboard through the cylinder and glue them together by the cuts with PVA glue.
We also glue a circle on top.
In general, the hat itself is ready. Let's start decorating and turning an ordinary hat into Artist's Hat.
4. To make an Artist’s Hat from an ordinary hat, we turn the cylinder into... a cup for pencils. To do this, we make a lot of colored pencil bookmarks from colored paper.
I showed how to make them in the video below. I spent a full package of colored paper on pencils for the hat. At the same time, in order to make the pencils longer, I separately “wrapped” the finished pencil in a strip of colored paper.
5. Decorate the brim of the hat. The brim of the hat is our artist's sketches. So I covered it with pictures from a children's coloring book.
I covered the bottom part with colored green paper and also added a couple of pictures.
6. Glue the pencils to the hat in a chaotic manner. This turned out to be the most difficult task, since the pencils are quite thick and need to be pressed firmly and for a long time. I found a way out: after covering everything with glue again at night, I simply put several rubber bands on the cylinder. They coped with their task simply excellently: not a single pencil even thought about running away, oh, coming unglued)))
7. On the top of the cylinder we glue a rainbow palette of colors: circles of colored paper in rainbow colors.
I wanted to add a tassel, but then it seemed unnecessary to me.
That's all, the DIY Artist's Hat is ready!
I am sending my delighted son to kindergarten. The son's group took place of honor and earned a certificate:
My son and I really loved our hat. She turned out to be very cheerful and positively creative... What do you think? And our hat also has a fabulous continuation, the Tale of the Artist’s Hat and the miracles it can do.
A large number of not only hats, but also costumes for any party can be found on the website

Do your kindergarten host similar events? And do you cook for your children? similar crafts? I will be glad to share experiences.
Have fun creative moments!
With love,
Lyudmila and Arseny Potsepun.
Decide on the height of your hat. Set the distance on the compass to match the desired height. Draw a semicircle on the lining and cut it out with sharp scissors.
- Typically, a hat 9-10 inches (23-25 cm) high is sufficient for toddlers and young children. And for youth and teenagers, a height of 11-12 inches (28-30 cm) is more suitable.
- When drawing the circle, place the compass needle in the middle of the bottom edge of your lining. Draw a semicircle around this point in an upward direction. Please note that the flat edge of the piece will be half as long as its height.
- If you need a specific height for your hat, add 1 inch (2.5 cm) to the length at the seams.
Roll the material into a cone. Roll the lining to form a peak at the top. Keep the bottom on your work surface.
- Once the hat's circumference is equal to the wearer's head circumference, pin the cone together and try it on. If it fits well, you can continue. If not, make the circle larger or smaller as needed.
Cut off the excess. Once you have finished fitting, cut off any excess lining on the inside of the structure. Trim as much as needed.
- Leave 1 inch (2.5 cm) of overlapping material on the inside of the hat.
Transfer the pattern onto your fabric. Unfold the cone and place it on the fabric. Fasten with pins and cut according to the pattern.
Iron both parts. Using an iron set on low, press the lining and fabric well. Press until the two parts connect to each other.
- When using synthetic fabric, use low temperature and act very carefully so that the material does not melt.
- Read the adhesive backing instructions before handling it. In principle, the procedure is the same for any type of lining, but some differences are still appropriate.
Sew the side. Roll the material into a cone and secure with pins. Sew the cut by hand using a neat stitch.
Cut out the hat brim from lined fabric. Measure the circumference of your cone. Using a compass, draw a circle of the same diameter on the lining. Draw a second circle around the first, 2-3 inches apart. Cut out both circles so you are left with a ring.
Connect the ring pieces with an iron. Heat the iron well to melt the adhesive on the lining, which will stick to the fabric. Make sure there are no glued areas.
- Use the same temperature when gluing the edges as you did for the middle part of the ring.
Tuck the margins if necessary. When using material that is subject to wear, tuck the outer and inner edges 1/2 inch (1.25cm) each. Pin them together and sew them by hand.
- Skip this step if you are using felt or other thick material.
Making felt hats may seem like a difficult task, but it's actually quite simple. If you want to take a professional approach, you will need to use a hat mold and a special felt blank. If you are just starting to try yourself in this matter or want to start with something simpler, you can try felting a hat from wool using special needles.
Steps
Making a hat using a blank
Cover the hat on the form with a kitchen towel and steam the crown with an iron. Drape a kitchen towel over the hat and fill the iron with water. Turn on the iron, set it to iron wool and activate the steam function. Straighten the towel over the hat as you iron it. Work the entire crown of the hat in a circular motion, starting from the crown and ending at the top of the brim.
- If your iron doesn't have a wool setting, choose a low temperature setting or somewhere between low and medium heat.
- Be sure to keep a towel between the felt and the iron. Do not let the towel bunch up under the iron; straighten it out all the time.
- The duration of steaming a hat may vary. This should be done just long enough for the hat to begin to hold its shape. Typically, 5–10 seconds are enough to treat one zone.
Wrap the twine around the crown where you want the brim of the hat to begin. You can also use a rubber band specially designed for this purpose (it is also sold in craft stores). This will help you create the necessary fold in the felt between the crown and brim of the hat. In most cases, the brim of the hat lies flat and begins where the crown widens sharply to the sides.
- It doesn't matter what kind of string you use in this case; you'll take it off later.
- Note that not all hats have brims. For example, a pillbox hat itself is only a crown. If this is your case, skip this step.
- You can also attach a row of snaps side by side around the perimeter of the crown, but be aware that they may leave dents in the felt.
Proceed to shaping the brim using an iron. Continue repositioning the towel and steaming the hat with the iron. Be sure to straighten out any wrinkles or creases in the hat material, especially in the fold area between the crown and brim.
- If you want to make a cloche hat, remove it from the mold and press the brim as desired on an ironing board. Be sure to keep the towel between the felt and the iron.
Let the hat cool, remove the string from it and trim along the brim. Remove all the snaps that hold the brim of the hat on the underside of the shape, then remove the twine you used to create the transition from the crown to the brim. Finally, remove the hat from the uniform. Using scissors, trim the folded edge of the brim. At this stage, the fields can be made narrower or given an asymmetrical shape.
If desired, sew hat wire around the perimeter of the hat brim. Wrap the hat wire around the brim of the hat and cut a piece to the required length with wire cutters. Using a loop stitch, sew the wire to the brim of the hat.
- The color of the threads does not matter as their main purpose is to secure the wire.
- This step will help make the fields stronger. If you don't want to mess with the wire, just skip this step and move on to the next one.
At your discretion, sew a ribbon around the perimeter of the brim. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to cover the entire circumference of the brim. First, sew the ribbon on top of the brim, face down (along the edge), first aligning the edges of the tape and the brim. Then fold the tape over to the underside of the brim and sew a second time.
- This can be done manually or using sewing machine. Use a straight stitch and threads that match the ribbon.
- Use a ribbon that matches the style of your hat. Typically, satin and grosgrain ribbons work well for hats.
- If you reinforced the brim with hat wire, then this step is necessary to hide the wire. If you didn't use wire, you can still decorate the hat with ribbon to make it more interesting.
If desired, sew grosgrain ribbon from the inside along the bottom edge of the crown. If you look inside professionally made hats, you will notice the presence of a grosgrain ribbon along the lower edge of the crown. To style your hat in the same way, cut a piece of grosgrain ribbon the appropriate length to sew on the inside of the hat, and sew the ends together. Insert the ribbon ring into the hat and then hand stitch the top edge to the bottom edge of the crown.
- The tape should be fixed strictly where the fields begin to diverge from the crown.
- This will allow the hat to better hold its shape and not stretch. This tape has nothing to do with decorative ribbon on top of the crown.
- Your stitches will be visible from the inside. Therefore, the sewn ribbon will then need to be turned inside the hat.
Decorate the hat as you wish. Here you can give free rein creativity. For a more professional look, hand sew embellishments onto the hat using a needle and thread. If you don't want to sew, you can try gluing them with hot glue or special textile glue.
- For a simple decoration, wrap ribbon around the crown and sew the ends together. Cover the seam with a bow or artificial flower.
- Also simple decorations Felt appliqués can be used, for example, in the form of flowers and bows.
- If you need to make a hat in vintage style, decorate it with a thin feather inserted into the ribbon on the crown.
Felting a felt hat yourself
-
Cover the styrofoam hat mold with plastic. You can find hat molds made from styrofoam in online stores, as well as in craft stores. You can also make such a mold yourself by cutting the styrofoam block accordingly or covering the bolster pillow with a sheet of foam material. The main thing is that the shape you use matches the size of your head and the type of hat you want to make.
- When buying a hat shape, make sure that it is intended for felting. If it's too hard, you won't be able to stick felting needles into it.
- Do not use a wooden hat mold; it has a completely different purpose.
- Do not use cling film, it is not strong enough; better use the regular one plastic bag. This will make it easier for you to remove the finished hat from the mold.
-
Cover the form with intersecting tufts of felting wool. Cover the top of the hat shape with a thin layer of overlapping tufts of felted wool. For example, first lay all the bundles horizontally, and then place a layer of vertical bundles on top.
- Felting wool is regular raw wool that has not yet been woven into yarn. It can be purchased at craft stores or online stores.
- Wool can be taken in one color or used different colors to achieve special effects.
-
Felt the wool on the form using a felting needle holder with several needles. To do this, simply press the needle holder into the wool until you feel the needles enter the hat shape. Take the needle holder out, plug it in again, and so on. Continue working until all the wool is felted into a single layer of felt.
- A felting needle holder looks like a brush with needles sticking out instead of bristles on one side. You can purchase such a tool in craft stores or online stores.
- Be careful when handling the felting needle holder; its needles are very sharp.
-
Add wool to the sides of the crown and brim, then increase the overall thickness of the hat. Start by adding crossed horizontal and vertical tufts of wool to the sides of the hat, including the brim if there should be one. Felt the wool into felt and then repeat the felting process over the entire surface of the hat. In total, four layers of wool need to be knitted together.
- Again, cover the top of the hat (crown) with wool first, and then move to the sides of the crown and brim.
- A layer of vertical tufts is considered one layer, and horizontal tufts are considered a second layer.
- If desired, you can felt more than four layers of wool together if you want a thick hat. Work with an even number of layers, there can be 6 or 8 (maximum).
-
Remove the felted hat from the mold and remove the plastic. The wool will stick to the hat mold, so you will need to carefully separate them from each other. Place your fingers between the hat and the mold, carefully prying them apart. First clear the brim, then move to the sides of the crown and crown. Once the hat is removed from the mold, remove the plastic from the felt.
- Be careful when removing the plastic to avoid damaging the hat itself.
