Video tutorial: DIY swimsuit

Hello, dear readers, I am writing this article today about how to sew a swimsuit at home, and here I found a video about swimsuit models for those with curvy figures, watch:
In order to sew a swimsuit yourself, it is enough to have a sewing machine with a simple zig-zag function.
That's all. This is enough to completely sew an entire swimsuit or thong with your own hands.
From the reverse side, of course, it will not look like the factory one. But that's not the point.
First, let's see how a regular stitch behaves when you stretch it (imagine how you take off or put on a swimsuit). Right. The seams have burst in some places.
To prevent this from happening, we will use a zig-zag with a small step. Set the stitch length to 2 mm and the zigzag width to 1.5-2 mm. Try it on a scrap piece of fabric. Now stretch the seam. If it is torn, increase the width of the zig-zag.
This seam can be used when sewing side, shoulder, and step sections of a swimsuit. You can also zig-zag all the seams.
This was a small “lyrical” digression, but now let’s get down to business.
Materials you will need for sewing:
- 0.6 m knitted fabric with lycra 1.2 m wide
- 0.25 m of knitted mesh for lining the upper part of the bodice.
- Elastic band 8 mm wide.
- A piece of cotton jersey measuring 10 by 10 cm for the gusset.
Fold the top front of the main and lining fabrics, wrong sides together. You can even out and sweep the cuts with a 1.5 cm wide seam yourself.
From knitted fabric, cut out a strip of fabric for the bodice ties. 60 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. The split thread is located along the strip.
Fold the strip lengthwise, right side inward, and sew the longitudinal sections together with a zig-zag stitch. Stitch width 3 mm; stitch length 2 mm. This line can also be done on an overlocker, if you have one.
Now turn the part for the ties right side out: To do this, you can use the old fashioned method: take a more powerful hand needle, it is sometimes called a “gypsy needle”. Thread the thread in quadruples and secure the thread to the tip of the swimsuit string.
Then pass the needle into the part with the blunt end first and move the needle towards the exit.
When the needle appears outside, very carefully pull the thread, straightening the part with your fingers at the top.
This is what you have: this is the part for the strings of the swimsuit.
Now pin and baste the resulting straps to the bottom cut of the upper part of the front in the center, placing one on the front side and the other on the wrong side.
Baste and sew the bottom and top front pieces with a straight stitch, stretching the fabric. This must be done to ensure that the seam is elastic. The seam width should be 7 mm. Sew open edges using a zig-zag stitch.
Place the front and back pieces right sides together and baste along the side edges using a 7mm wide seam.
Sew the side seams with a 7mm wide seam and overcast with a zigzag stitch.
Connect the front and back of the swimsuit along the step cut with a seam 5 mm wide. Seal the cuts. Do not remove the temporary stitch for basting the gusset to the swimsuit yet, it will come in handy later.
Getting ready for summer! Swimsuit (pattern)
This swimsuit is separate, consists of a strip top without straps, which on the one hand will allow you to tan evenly without nasty marks. tanned skin, and on the other hand, such a swimsuit, again, due to the lack of supporting action of the straps, is suitable for the owner of a relatively small breast (up to about size 2, then for reliability, straps should still be used). The panties of this swimsuit have a fashionable low waist, but, in general, very chaste shapes. I don’t provide patterns for printing and immediately sewing, sewing, sewing. But this is for the best, because all people are unique, and we women are even more so!) Therefore, below is a detailed construction of swimsuit patterns step by step. Swimsuit top pattern. The pattern of the upper part of the swimsuit - the top - consists of two parts: front and back, which are sewn together at the sides. Overall, it's a simple stripe that gradually tapers towards the back. You can see the process of constructing a swimsuit top pattern in the figure below. Constructing a swimsuit top pattern. The points in the first figure are marked at a distance of 3 cm from the center line. The centers of the chest are marked with crosses. Each rectangle, front and back, initially has dimensions: length equal to the half-circumference of the chest * 0.88 - 4 cm. This reduction in length will compensate for the stretching of the elastic fabric by reducing the height. And in height - 12 cm. When cutting, do not forget to add 20 mm to the constructed pattern: 10 mm for overlaying the edge and 10 mm for hemming the 9 mm elastic band. Pattern of swimsuit panties. Making a swimsuit panty pattern is a more complex process with many steps. The figure below shows the stages of creating a pattern. The panties of this swimsuit are approximately 5 cm above the leg opening. Constructing a pattern for swimsuit panties. When cutting a pattern for swimsuit panties, as well as when cutting a top, we make a 20 mm increase for the same needs. "Designing, modeling and sewing swimsuits" in St. Petersburg!Definitely need to sew! But from what? What materials to choose for an integral attribute of a beach holiday? Let's talk about swimsuit materials.
When choosing materials for this item of clothing, it is important to understand in what conditions we will wear this very item. More precisely, it is important that we feel comfortable both in water and on land, that the swimsuit holds its shape, color, dries quickly and does not lose its color. And all this can only be provided by synthetic elastic materials. And since we bathe in both salty and chlorinated water, the load on the material increases. All of the above requirements provide the following fibers, which in one percentage or another should be in the material for the future swimsuit.
1. Lycra (same as elastane or spandex) is a synthetic fiber developed and patented by DuPont. As a rule, lycra is always included in the materials for a swimsuit and does not exceed 30%. Threads made from this fiber have good elongation and elasticity. If the material contains this fiber, the fabric will be wear-resistant and will retain its original shape well.
2. Polyester– This is the most common and inexpensive synthetic fiber. It gives the material color fastness. But it has a number of disadvantages, such as fragility, poor ability for air exchange, and this entails a long drying time for the swimsuit.
3. Polyamide- this is also a synthetic fiber, but more expensive than the previous one and with improved properties. So, a material containing polyamide threads is more durable, holds its shape well, dries quickly, is more hygienic, and also has a pleasant shine.
4. Nylon- This is a type of polyamide fiber, but even more durable. If you are planning to sew a swimsuit from a material that contains nylon, then such a swimsuit will allow you to tighten and adjust your figure. But! Unfortunately, this swimsuit will quickly fade in the sun, since nylon is not UV resistant.
5. You can also meet Taktel is a particularly high-tech synthetic fiber developed by the DuPont brand. The uniqueness of the fiber is that the material can look very different: shiny and matte, velvety and silky. A swimsuit that contains tactel dries very quickly.
6. Microfiber- this is a fiber that gives the material a special silkiness and good hygienic properties, but microfiber quickly loses its shape.
Now, knowing these properties, you can easily choose the material for your future swimsuit.
I would also like to draw attention to the following important points.
If you have chosen light shades material, then it is necessary to make a lining. Because when wet, light-colored materials become translucent.
· If you want bra cups to correct or fix your breasts, you need to use linen foam or a molded ready-made cup.
· If you want to adjust your figure with the help of a swimsuit, you can use an elastic mesh as a lining. It will allow you to tighten the desired areas of your figure.
· To prevent the swimsuit from stretching in the water, the sections are treated with special latex elastic bands.
· Always remember that swimsuits stretch in water, so if you are sewing a two-piece swimsuit, make the volumes a little tighter than you are used to. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will get out of the water, losing the “top” or the “bottom” will run away.
· When working with elastic materials, use needles for knitwear, which will significantly improve the quality of the stitching. The needle number can be from 75 -80, depending on the density of the material.
· To add elasticity to the seams, you can use textured threads. They are more elastic, but less durable. Therefore, it is better to use them for an overlock or flat-stitch machine.
- · The swimsuit can be made reversible. That is, use the same material as a lining, but of a different color. Just remember that in this case it becomes more elastic and the pattern may need to be enlarged.
· Looks original if top and bottom two-piece swimsuit sew from materials of different colors. Thus, from two swimsuits you can get at least 4!
Happy sewing everyone!
P.S. If you want to learn how to sew a swimsuit and do not live in St. Petersburg, it doesn’t matter! Our online school hosts
Good day everyone!
The summer holiday season has arrived, and it's time to think about a vacation at sea. What's a vacation at sea without a new swimsuit? Today we want to invite you to sew a swimsuit with your own hands.
This task may seem impossible to many of you, but believe me, it is possible! Our master class today will tell you step by step how to make a stylish swimsuit at home.
So, to create a swimsuit we will need: 50 cm of lucra swimwear, 40 cm of knitted mesh for the lining, a flat elastic band, and in order to make a pattern of ordinary knitted panties of a convenient shape for you.
In addition to the materials for this master class, you will need sewing machine with a zigzag function, since all connecting seams must remain very elastic.
Let's start by making a pattern. To do this, cut the panties along the side seams, and then separate the elastic bands from them.
We place the remaining piece on the base material and cut it out taking into account the allowances for stitching.
Then cut out the lining from the knitted mesh as shown in the photo.
We will only cover the front of the panties with the lining. Fold and baste, and then sew the lining to the base.
To make it comfortable and prevent the materials from slipping, temporarily baste the lining onto the base along the edge.
Elastic bands will help us ensure a tight fit to the body. In this case, we use a simple elastic band, preferably elastic and soft. Cut a piece of elastic for each side of the main panty piece.
It is very important to make the elastic a little shorter than the edge of the part, this will give the cuts additional elasticity.
To make the edges look finished, we cut out edgings - narrow strips of knitwear 2.5 cm wide.
These stripes can be either the same color as the base or in contrasting colors; we will also make decorative laces for attaching panties and tying the top.
Baste panty elastic to the edge of the knit strips.
Then baste these blanks along all the sections of the panties from the front side of the base, slightly gathering the knitwear onto the elastic band.
Now the elastic bands can be attached. Adjust the zigzag stitch on your machine so that it is slightly narrower than the width of the elastic and the average stitch frequency.
This stitch will optimally maintain the stretchability of the edge.
After you have sewn all the elastic, fold the free edges of the edging to the wrong side, going around the elastic.
Baste and then stitch the edges on the front side.
Don't forget to remove the basting threads. After stitching off the excess edging from the wrong side of the product, you can cut it out using scissors.
The base of the panties is almost ready. Fold the raw edges inward and stitch them onto the base of the product.
When you sew the stitch, step back 1 cm from the edge in order to subsequently secure the side seam with a decorative cord.
You can buy a decorative cord ready-made, but it is better to make it yourself from the same knitwear. To do this, sew the prepared knitted strips in half, and then cut off the excess allowance with scissors.
Using a pin, turn the cord right side out.
The required total length of the swimsuit cord is 4 meters. It will be more convenient to make the cord in separate sections: two 50 cm for panties, and two 1.5 m for the top.
Thread the cord sections into the side sections of the finished panties.
Now let's do the top part of the swimsuit, it's even easier to do! From the main fabric we cut out two identical triangles.
Then two similar triangles, only made of lining knitted mesh. Reduce the width of the lining by a couple of centimeters so that it ultimately cannot turn outward.
Baste and then stitch the sides of the lining and base.
Once you have stitched both triangles, turn them right side out.
The bottom wide edge must be aligned and sewn with temporary stitches.
Fold the top and bottom edges over to the lining side.
Stitch them in the same way as you did the side edges of the panties.
Thread the decorative cord into the holes in the top and bottom sections.
That's it!
A stylish hand-sewn swimsuit is ready!
In such a swimsuit you will definitely be unique, because it is made in a single copy. You can choose any color, and even experiment with a combination of patterns, because the range of “lukra” swimwear in fabric stores is very diverse.
Be bright this summer!
I wish you success in your endeavors and a great summer vacation! Your LOARA workshop.
