Crochet summer children's bandana. Crocheted bandana: tips and methods for knitting a bandana using the example of master classes for beginners with photographs and video stories
With all the abundance of handmade summer hats on the Internet, it must be said that the vast majority of them are girly, and it is very difficult to find a successful model of a summer knitted hat for a boy, so I had to “invent” a bandana-type hat for my son for the summer (with ties at the back ). This required 100% cotton yarn, crazy hands, a hook and imagination. Let's see what happened in the end)))
Since most thin “holey” hats knitted in the round seem more “girly” to me personally, I decided to knit them using a more complex pattern. The most successful examples of “boyish” summer bandana-type hats:
So, looking at these photos, you can understand that they are connected according to a similar principle (the pattern may differ, but the “pattern” is the same).
Here is an approximate diagram of the constituent elements of a bandana hat:
First I knitted a long strip with single crochets, in fact the strip was a bandage on the forehead, with ties at the back of the head. Next, having estimated the middle of the headband, I knitted the central part (about 14 cm wide), and the “tail” turned out to be tapering downwards (it could have been left wider).
We knit the initial strip with single crochets, and the central strip according to the second pattern
This part should be quite long so that the tail covers the neck (so that the neck does not get sunburned in the sun). The pattern is quite simple - alternating a row of double crochets and a row of double crochets - an air loop - a double crochet (like a fillet). Next is the most difficult part - the sides. The sidewalls are 2 semicircles, and their height is the height of the cap from the original strip. I knitted the sides with an even more “holey” pattern to maximize ventilation. Anyone familiar with knitting in the round can easily figure out how to make a half circle.
Semicircle patterns for knitting a bandana
Having departed from the edge of the central part the planned height of the semicircle (radius), you need to either form an arch (see diagram above), or alternatively you can knit 6 double crochets into one base - you will get a small “semicircle”, and then we knit the next rows of this semicircle, turning the fabric over at the end of the row.
There were 9 rows in total. Like a regular circle, increases are constantly made here (I also switched from single crochets to double crochets to make the “holes” larger). I crocheted 2 finished sides to the central part (we got protruding “outer” seams, but they don’t spoil the product at all, but on the contrary give it a “boyish” quality).
Because after trying it on (my child hates it, so I do it 1-2 times at most), it turned out that the depth of the hat was not enough, so I had to knit a few more rows of single crochets along the edge of the original strip (and the strings became thicker).
So, on a whim, and having only basic patterns, you can crochet a very impressive summer bandana for a boy, and if you also experiment with changing colors and decorations, you will get a super thing that a child will love to wear (mine is already between a baseball cap and with a knitted bandana he chooses the second).
Beautiful crochet bandanas and hats for boys
Thanks to the ties, this hat stays on the head very well, even if the child hangs upside down in it (and he will!) it will not fall off. But in principle, you can do it without ties, and in general, using this principle, even knit warm hats, not only for your son, but maybe even for your husband))) This is a good worthy alternative to knitting in the round, it looks very cool and boyish.
Take this wonderful idea and, as always, happy knitting to you and gorgeous new clothes for your kids!
Winter. It’s cold, and all the store-bought hats don’t cover the ears or are too thick or too thin.
Where can you get a hat that will cover the ears well enough, with your favorite character, the right length at the back of the head, and can grow with your child? But how to crochet such a hat for beginners?
Summer. It’s hot, the sun is baking, and the search for a thin panama hat does not yield results: it’s too tight, the wrong color or size, the shape doesn’t fit because the ponytail needs to be pulled out or the visor on the cap or the bandana is too deep.
Too girly or too boyish. How to crochet a cap or bandana, or maybe better, a panama hat for a girl, so that it is your color and size and the desired density?
Autumn. The chilling wind constantly blows, and your child’s hat tries to open his ears or move down.
And no matter how you choose it, the child is growing and needs a new hat for the next season.
Most importantly, you want your child to love his hat and be able to choose it from the color and shape to the stripe or decoration on it. Where to buy it, so that with ears and the required depth it is not too dense, but not too thin, we recommend crocheting it.
In any of these cases, there is only one way out - to knit your child’s dream hat yourself or order it from a knitter, but as you know, manual labor is highly valued. Therefore, let's consider such questions.
How to crochet a hat for beginners? How to crochet a bandana? How to crochet a captain's cap? How to crochet a hat with ears? How to crochet a Panama hat for girls and boys? How to crochet a hat with ears? How to knit a baby hat?
These and many other questions arise for beginning knitters as soon as they start knitting according to video tutorials, where there is no general picture of how to make a product.
Pay attention to the video, where they tell and show what the hat is made of and how to calculate the size for your child’s head.
To ensure that the hat fits your child without having to re-bandage it, we recommend that you read all the articles in this section on hats.
The section and articles in it are aimed at beginners and give a clear idea of knitting hats, both summer and warm ones with ears.
How to choose a diagram or video tutorial? How to tie a hat to the end? How to understand knitting patterns? How can you immediately determine how a hat is knitted from a photo?
To do this, knit a sample and measure the number of loops vertically in 1 cm, so you will know how many rows there should be in your product.
If your crown is 19 cm, and there are 3 rows in 1 cm, then the number of rows is 19 * 3 = 57 rows of crown for the cap.
The horizontal density is similarly measured according to the sample, it shows how many loops you have in 1 cm, how many loops are needed to obtain the desired volume.
For example, the volume of the head is 52 cm, and in 1 cm there are 4 single crochets, then 52 * 4 = 208 single crochets for the entire hat.
Start knitting by watching the necessary video or photo master classes. If there are icons on the diagram that you do not know how to knit, then learn how to knit these loops. Take training videos on YouTube. In our hats, everything is shown in video lessons.
Learning the basics of crocheting a hat
Looking at the little cheat sheets, you will immediately see the difference between the 3 hat shapes. Pay attention to the description in the photo, it gives important practical advice on knitting each pattern.
The second photo shows the rules for crocheting a circle.
Why do you need this?
The cap consists of 3 parts: the bottom, the enlargement part and the crown. We will analyze the ears, ties and other details on specific models.
Rule of the circle and double crochets
Single crochets
Choosing a hook and thread
It is important to choose the right hook; pay attention to the recommended size on the threads themselves.
Look at the photo of 2 circles, the first is knitted with single crochets, the second with double crochets, where the calculation of knitting density is described. The threads are the same and the hook size is the same.
Remember that double crochets are a looser stitch than single crochets.
A hat knitted with single crochets will be denser and require a larger number of threads. Winter and autumn hats are knitted with single crochets, as well as ears on hats. When choosing a double crochet stitch, use a simple secret.
Secret: If you knit tightly, then choose a hook 0.5 mm larger; for those who like to knit more loosely, choose a smaller hook size.
This way you will be able to make a hat more dense, even knitted with double crochets.
It's time to master the basics and understand the schemes
How to understand the diagrams and what they consist of?
Circle knitting patterns show:
- How many loops do you need to cast on?
- How many loops are needed and where to add or subtract.
- What the pattern on a knitted circle will look like.
- Knitting moves from the center to the edges of the circle. It is necessary to understand the symbols on the diagrams.
Description of the designation on the diagrams

It is important to understand that many hats are knitted in the round, the rules that we discussed with you above, there are also patterns in the photo.
Simple bandana for summer
This bandana pattern is easy to knit for both boys and girls. For a boy, we choose colors in blue or gray, while for a girl, most often, we choose pink or purple shades.
The difference between a bandana and a regular hat lies in the ties that exist and allow you to adjust the volume of the head and the degree of fit at your discretion. The principle of knitting a bandana is exactly the same as knitting a cap for the summer in the round, reaching the point where you will have a cut, leaving 1-2 squares unknitted, and the knitting itself will already go in turning rows.
For those who are beginners, we do not recommend knitting a hat from different colors of thread; stick to one color. The reason is that you may simply become confused or confused.
Therefore, decorating it with an anchor, a steering wheel, a typewriter, a bear, and fish will be an option for boys. And placing flowers, berries, cats, butterflies or ladybugs in front or on the side - this is suitable for girls.
You need to prepare: thread, hook, scissors.
Crochet bandana for boys and girls for the summer:
If you like bandanas that have a whole wedge tied at the back, then after knitting the desired height of the hat, proceed to knitting the strings, moving in rotary rows, and adjust the size of the strings - this is a set of air loops - according to the volume of the head and how you want them to be tied. Knit the ties themselves with single crochets, because... Thick ties are not convenient to tie.
When the ties are ready, proceed to knitting the wedge, for this we knit a straight fabric in rotating rows, make sure that the number of loops is the same. When the length reaches the required height, tie the bottom with crab stitches or half-stitches, cut and tighten the thread.

Captain's cap
To knit a captain's cap, prepare: white, black or blue, yellow threads, a hook, scissors, a centimeter.
A distinctive feature of the captain's cap is that we knit the bottom a few centimeters larger than the child's head, then we make decreases so that the base is equal to the volume of the head. Determine the size of the cap yourself by placing it on the child’s head.

The bandana as an element of clothing goes back to the days of the Wild West, when travelers protected their respiratory tract from dust by tying bandanas around their necks. Today, it is used more for decorative purposes or as protection from ultraviolet rays, and at the same time, the bandana has not lost its popularity for many decades. A crocheted bandana not only protects your head from direct sunlight, but also protects the delicate skin of your neck from burns, while adding a special style to your appearance.
The bandana is equally suitable for both adults and children, both girls and boys. And if you want to add some zest to your baby’s or your own look, decorate the bandana with some interesting pattern. A child will like a bright car or a favorite cartoon character, while an adult will like some kind of floral ornament or geometric abstraction.
A bandana knitted using a regular crochet, due to its simplicity of execution, will allow you to make a variety of headdresses for any outfit or look, in addition, it is a very elegant thing that is ideal for styles such as stalker and unisex.
The patterns for knitting a bandana are different - you can knit it in the shape of a regular hat with a slit in the back and attach strings to the structure, or you can assemble it from two semicircular parts and a rectangular front part. Everyone decides for themselves how to knit this or that bandana, but both of these methods are good and correct in their own way.
Bandanas are traditionally considered a man's headdress, but if your little princess is also not indifferent to such a thing, then there is nothing difficult in tying one for a girl. In terms of knitting methods, a women's bandana is no different from a men's one, just use a more feminine color of yarn and choose a decoration that is more suitable for a girl.
How to create a DIY crochet bandana for beginners
Before you start knitting a bandana, you need to choose the yarn to work with. Since a bandana is primarily a summer headwear, thin mercerized 100% cotton in light shades is best suited for it, since dark colors attract the sun's rays.
Let's take a closer look at how to quickly and easily crochet a bandana using MK for beginners as an example.
For work we will need:
- Hook No. 2;
- Yarn for knitting – 50g (100% cotton, 50g/282m).
You can use a sewn bandana as a pattern, or try it on directly on your child.
Stages of knitting a bandana. We knit the side semicircular parts, and you can use this pattern or any other pattern you like best. We tie the finished parts with single crochets, and you should get two parts like this.
At this stage we knit the frontal part. In order to give the shape of the back of the head, it is necessary to make darts - for this, at a distance of 3 cm from the edge in each row on both sides, we knit 2 stitches together.
To get a hole like this:
We knit the “tail” to the required length, and in the last 5-6 rows we make decreases - we knit three columns together. Finally, we also tie the piece with single crochets.
We connect the lateral semicircular parts to the frontal part with a chain stitch.
We cast on about 50 chain stitches (for ties), join them to the bottom of the bandana, knit single crochets and again 50 chain stitches. Then we knit 5 - 6 turning rows with single crochets.
The boy's bandana is ready! In this way, you can knit many similar hats and bandanas on the head of your bully or little princess to protect them from the scorching rays of the sun, because children spend a lot of time in the sun and are more often exposed to overheating and sunstroke than adults.
Now let's look at how to knit this versatile headdress in a circular manner using the example of a master class on making a bandana for a girl.
To make this bandana, we will need the same materials and tools as for the previous master class (the only difference is the color of the yarn).
Stages of work.To begin, we put five chain loops on the hook and connect them into a circle.
In the next row we make three lifting loops and knit the entire row with single crochets, making two stitches in each loop. That is, from a circle of five air loops we should get a row of ten columns.
We also begin the next rows with lifting loops, but we make additions less often - every three or four loops - the main thing is to ensure that the product does not curl.
The knitted circle is the crown of the child's head. As soon as its diameter has become sufficient, you can start knitting the sides of the bandana - for this we knit the remaining rows as usual, without any additions and only if necessary, we make decreases.
At this stage, we begin knitting the ties on the back side of the bandana - to do this, we knit 8 - 10 half-columns from the end point of the last row.
Then we make three lifting air loops and knit a row of double crochets to the point where we start knitting the half-stitches.
Turn the knitting and knit another row of single crochets. Next, we knit a couple more rows in the same way and, having knitted it to the end, we put on the hook about 30 - 50 air loops for tying.
We turn the knitting, knit a row of double crochets to the opposite end of the bandana and again make the same number of chain stitches for tying as on the opposite edge.
We turn the knitting and knit the entire tie with double crochets and then, to smooth the row, 2 single crochets and 3 half double crochets.
Take yarn of a different color and tie the edges of the bandana with single crochets.
The bandana is ready. Now, to give it a more feminine look, you need to decorate it with a pattern. In this case, these will be flowers, knitting patterns for which you can come up with yourself or find on the Internet.
The result is such a simple, but at the same time original and interesting product.
Video on the topic of the article
In conclusion, we present to your attention several videos on how to knit a bandana hat for you or your child, after reading which you will easily cope with this task.
Hats are necessary, especially for children, both in winter and summer. Little children's heads are very susceptible to environmental irritants, and we suggest keeping them safe. And a crocheted bandana will help you with this. This is not only a beautiful item of clothing, but also a useful thing.
Little pirate
One of the ideas for decorating a bandana for a boy is the image of a little pirate, hardened by the harsh sea sun. It is perfect for both everyday use and a themed children's party. In terms of the degree of difficulty of knitting, it is at an average level, and therefore if you have not encountered knitting before, use the patterns that will be in the article.
For a head with a girth of 40 cm you will need: CoCo yarn (100% cotton, 240 m/50 g) – 30 g of white, milk and red remains, hook No. 2, 1 and an adhesive eye.
Description of work: cast on a chain of 5 vp with white yarn, close it into a ring. Knit 16 s in the center of the ring. s/n and then knit according to pattern 1.
After all the rows of the pattern are knitted, leave 1 cell of the fillet mesh for the cut and knit in straight and reverse rows, repeating the last 2 rows of pattern 1 5 more times (it is shown in the photo above). For ties, place chains of 40-50 chains along the edges of the cut. p. and knit 2 rows of b/n stitches on them. Tie the edges of the bandana, the opening and the ties with single stitches, one row of white yarn and one row of red yarn.
How to knit the “Pirate” applique: use milky yarn to knit a circle according to pattern 2.
Use red yarn to knit headbands according to pattern 3.
Tie the part with one row of non-woven posts. Embroider speckles over the entire surface of the headband. Sew an applique onto the bandana, embroider a mouth, nose, sew or glue an eye, as shown in the photo.
Openwork headband
Happy mothers of little princesses want to give them only the best, from head to toe. We suggest starting with the head, namely, knitting a simple but very beautiful openwork Panama hat for a girl. Follow this tutorial for beginners and you will succeed.
Bandana for 3-5 years. To start, you will need Tulip yarn (100% microfiber, 250 m/50 g) - 100 g lilac, knitting needles and hook No. 2, 5.
Attention! The product is made with two folds of thread. Rib 1*1: knit alternately 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch. Cast on 110 loops on knitting needles and knit 2 cm with 1*1 elastic band. Then crochet in every 4th loop a chain of 9 air loops, in the 2nd and each subsequent row - knit in every 5th loop (middle of the chain). Knit the first 4 rows in straight and reverse rows, from the 5th to the 20th row, knit in the round. Knitting pattern:
Pull the cap at the top and sew a seam. Crochet a bow: on an elastic band and on 4 rows on both sides, knit 7 fountains from 9 air. Loop. Work 10 rows, then knit 1 less scallop on each side until 1 scallop remains. Thread the bow through the hole above the elastic band. Attach a flower on top of the ends. You will get this women's bandana:
The pages of fashion magazines on needlework offer a variety of clothing and hats in abundance, but you must agree that most of them are intended for girls. What about our boys? After all, their mothers also want the baby to be dressed in beautiful, original clothes, knitted with their own hands. Crochet for boys has a number of features, and some of them will be discussed in this article.
Let's start with hats.
Bandanas for boys, crocheted - an ideal summer option
So, which model of headdress is the most practical, comfortable and beautiful? Definitely a bandana. After all, such a headdress looks super modern, and can quite often be found in a pirate’s wardrobe. And every boy dreams of being like a sea robber. And, having offered him such a headdress, you can be sure that he will wear it with great pleasure.
Now, having decided on the model, you can choose the knitting method. I would like to note that there are not so many of them, decide for yourself which one is right for you. Here are a few of the most popular.
The first way to crochet bandanas for boys
You can knit a bandana according to the pattern of a regular scarf, and then tie it on your head, making a beautiful knot. This model also looks very stylish as a neckerchief. The pattern for such a bandana can be anything, the main thing is not to use thick threads. You can decorate it with a knitted applique or iron-on stickers. For this model you will need only one skein of any cotton yarn, preferably fine. And this is how it is done.
We knit a chain of 3 chain stitches and the first row with double crochets, then in each next row (at the beginning and the end) we increase by one stitch. We knit even rows in this way - double crochet, chain stitch, double crochet; odd rows - ordinary. The result is an openwork pattern, just for boys - nothing superfluous. The threads used can be the same color or different. Who likes it more? Having reached the desired size, at the opposite ends of the resulting triangle we knit a chain of air loops with the length required for convenient tying. And we perform two more rows with double crochets along the entire length, including the ties. The bandana is ready!
The second way to knit a bandana
Another original version of a bandana for boys is crocheted from several parts according to the pattern. The pattern is openwork, but it is certainly ideal for a summer option. The manufacturing method is as follows. First, two semicircles are knitted (they will be located on the sides of the head), then the middle part. In order to determine the size, you need to measure the circumference of your head. Let's say it is 46 centimeters. The middle part is knitted with a width of 8 cm for children over two years old and 7 cm for those under this age. Now from the circumference of the head we need to subtract 16 cm (8+8) in the first case, and 14 (7+7) in the second. In the first option, 30 cm remains, which must be divided into two (15 cm will be the length of each semicircle). Let's start knitting semicircles. We collect 5 air loops, which we connect into a ring. Next, we knit 8 double crochets inside the resulting ring. We knit the next row, alternating a double crochet and an air loop. And in the same way all the other rows until the length of the lower part of the semicircle reaches the desired value. The second semicircle is knitted similarly to the first.
The middle part is even easier to knit. We make an air chain of the required length (7 or 8 cm). Then we knit, alternating, openwork and continuous rows. The length of the middle part should be several centimeters longer than the diameter of the semicircle. Having finished the middle part, we assemble the bandana into a single whole and tie it along the lower edge with double crochets, while simultaneously making ties for it. They can be knitted or made from ready-made braid. This version of the bandana can be plain or multi-colored. With a successful combination of shades, the bandana acquires a unique style and sophistication. In this case, decoration is not required, since the knitted pattern and various colors do not require additional decoration.
Replenishing your wardrobe with knitted items
Crocheted bandanas for boys are not the only manufacturing option. In this way you can easily create unique and stylish things for your baby.
How do you like this option? Knitted cap for autumn weather. It's very easy to do this. You will need a free evening, a thick hook and natural yarn. A relief pattern is best suited for this model. Buttons can be used as decoration.
Knitted T-shirts, shorts, bodysuits, jumpers - all these are stylish and beautiful things. If you know how to knit and have at least some skills, then you can easily cope with any task assigned to you. And your son will happily wear things that contain a piece of his mother’s care and warmth.
Crocheting for boys will give you the opportunity to diversify your baby’s wardrobe without any special financial expenses and get pleasure from the work done.
