30 ideas on how to make an autumn wreath with your own hands - from leaves, pine cones and other materials updated: October 17, 2016 by: Margarita Glushko
The wreath is the oldest amulet that people have created with their own hands since the times of ancient Persia. Once upon a time, wreaths made of laurel leaves were a kind of reward for the champions of the first Olympic Games, and “magic” wreaths made of various herbs and flowers adorned the heads of unmarried girls and were used in wedding ceremonies. All this was a long time ago and the magical meaning of wreaths has faded into oblivion. However, even today, walking through the autumn park, it is difficult to resist the temptation to weave a multi-colored wreath with your own hands, which will become not only an excellent head decoration, but also an original element of home decor.
Probably every child knows how to make a regular wreath of leaves; you just need to braid one petiole after another, just as a wreath of dandelions is woven. Therefore, we will not dwell on this, but will show you how to weave a wreath of maple leaves in the form of beautiful roses.
Autumn wreath on the head: master class
The first thing we need to do is prepare as many of those same roses as possible. To do this, we go to the park and collect a “bouquet” of beautiful maple leaves. So:
- We fold one maple leaf in half across the central vein so that the front side is on the outside. And roll the folded leaf into a tight roll.
- We take the second maple leaf and apply the finished “roll” to its front side. We bend the sheet in half so that the edge of the bend is approximately one centimeter above the core. Now we bend the protruding edge of the second sheet back, but do not smooth out the bend.
- Wrap the leaf around the core.
- We take the third sheet and repeat the same operation, only on the opposite side from the previous sheet.
- We repeat this operation until we get a beautiful bud. At the end we secure the rose with threads.
- We begin to assemble the wreath. For this we will need: a lot of roses, thread and a small piece of wire.
- We twist a circle of the required diameter from the wire (you can first measure your head). Next, we bend several finished roses at right angles and tie them together with threads. We make several such preparations.
- We begin to tie roses to the circle. Try to tie the roses fairly close to each other so that they can then be arranged in a checkerboard pattern.
- We complement the wreath with two more rows of roses along the outer and inner edges. And now, our wreath of autumn leaves is ready!
- As you can see, it’s not at all difficult to weave wreaths on your head from leaves, the main thing is desire and a little patience! And when spring comes, it will be possible to weave beautiful
In autumn, it’s so nice to walk through a yellowed park, inhaling the spicy aroma of fallen leaves! Yellow foliage is an ideal material for crafts, especially for making wreaths.
Types of Maple Wreaths
Wreaths are woven for different purposes. Most often just for fun. After all, you really want to admire this beauty for as long as possible in the fall and become a part of this miracle.
In Western countries, there is a fashion to decorate entrance doors with wreaths before the holidays or just like that, but in accordance with the season. A maple leaf wreath works best for this.
Well, who doesn’t have at least one photo in the autumn park at home? Of course, the main attribute here will be the king-wreath.
They are used for these purposes for several reasons. They have long roots and a very beautiful leaf blade. The wreaths they make are strong and lush - truly royal.
The simplest wreaths
Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to make a wreath of leaves. There are several ways: from the simplest to the relatively complex, but very effective.
First, let's try to make beauty in the simplest way. It is necessary to take the required number of sheets with a thick and not very long stem. Using your fingernail, make a small hole exactly in the middle of the leaf so that the root of the next leaf can fit through. We string it onto a leaf and make the same hole on it. In this way we weave the chain to the desired length. Of course, you won’t get a lush wreath, but it will take very little time to make. In the same way, you can make garlands or ribbons for a wreath with a more magnificent texture.
The second simple method consists of placing several leaves overlapping each other and piercing them together with tails in two rows so as not to crumble. In this way you can make a neat crown. Now you already know two ways to weave a wreath of leaves. You can move on to more complex options.
Maple leaf wreath based on
It's easy to make a wreath of leaves if you use a base for this purpose. If it is intended to be worn on the head, then the base should be thin and light. For example, you can take a piece of wire. For a door wreath, a thick and voluminous base made of wood or foam is more suitable.
We take pre-prepared leaves one at a time or in small bunches and begin to tie them to the base using thread, tape or the last one - the most unreliable, but very beautiful. We continue weaving in a circle. When we get to the start of work, we hide the free ends of the roots under the leaves and carefully wrap them.
In this way you can knit wreaths of any diameter. In addition, here it is easiest to follow the pattern, alternating red leaves with yellow and greenish ones. The disadvantage of this method is that the size must be selected in advance, since it will not be so easy to change it during the weaving process.
Simple weave ponytails
There is another interesting way to weave a wreath of leaves. It is known to us more from dandelions. This is the way many children make their own from yellow flowers.
The essence of weaving is that the leaf spine gradually entwines the previous roots. The technology is as follows: take two leaves with long ends. We hold one of them in our right hand, and with our left hand we place the second one in front of the worksheet and twist its spine through the bottom, bringing the tip between the two plates. Then we hold both roots in our right hand. Thus, it turns out that we pressed it down with the tip. To complete the wreath of maple leaves, we continue to braid the bundle in the same way in our right hand. This fixes the ends of the leaves and prevents the product from falling apart. It is better to finish the weaving if the spent ends are first tied together with thread, and then closed in a circle to make a finished wreath.
Braiding
We offer another interesting master class. A wreath of leaves is woven in it using a French braid. You can imagine what it looks like if you have seen woven garlands of onions. As a rule, this is done with a pigtail.
Everyone can weave a regular three-strand braid. To make a wreath using this method, you need to add one leaf with a long stem each time you cross the bunches.
It will be difficult at first, but over time weaving will become much more fun. To prevent the wreath from falling apart and to hold more securely, you can use three long, strong threads of medium thickness as the base. They will be additional “fittings” for future decoration.
If you don’t know how to make a wreath of leaves very lush, try adding not one, but two or three leaves to each strand. Only in this case you definitely can’t do without threads. Very thick weaving does not hold well and falls apart.
And one more nuance: choose leaves with long and thin roots for the wreath. Thick ones will break and crumble.
Wreath of roses
A very impressive decoration is obtained from roses made from the same leaves. But this is already a labor-intensive activity that is not suitable for a walk, but can keep children busy. In addition, such a wreath will be an excellent decoration both for the door and for the queen of the autumn ball.
We start with making flowers. You will need a lot of them. Therefore, it is worth stocking up on a large number of leaves in advance. Take one leaf and fold it in half, top to spine. Roll it into a tight tube. Next, prepare the next sheet in the same way and wrap it around the tube. We continue weaving the rose until we get a flower of the desired size. We fix the rose at the bottom with a thread and cut off the ends under it. The smoother the cut, the easier it will be to attach the flower to the base later.
The second stage consists of covering the base with our flowers. The main thing is to plant them as close to each other as possible. To make a wreath of maple leaves beautiful, you need to use either a flat ring or a very wide base as the base, which will look impressive on your head.
How to extend the life of a wreath?
Now we know how to weave a wreath of leaves. But there is another problem - its fragility. If the decoration is made only for a walk and a photo shoot on it, then there is no need to worry about it. But I want to keep decorative wreaths in their original form for as long as possible.
Of course, a maple leaf wreath is made of dead material. Anyway, sooner or later they will wither and dry out. To slow down this process a little, try creating a humid atmosphere. Spray the wreath with water, but don't overdo it. If there is too much moisture, the leaves will begin to darken and rot. Try adding a little antiseptic to the water to avoid this too. With these events you will take a couple of days of beauty away from the inexorable laws of nature.
Holidays of wreaths
And finally, a few words about how popular a wreath made of maple leaves is in the world. Every autumn in the West, almost every door is decorated with this product. This makes the exterior of any estate look elegant in autumn. It's so popular in some cities that they've been hosting maple wreath festivals for decades. They hold competitions for the best product, and recognized masters show beginners how to weave a wreath of leaves.
In our country, people do not revere this item so much, but every autumn you will meet in the park with a wreath on your head. And a smile automatically appears on your face in response. It’s wonderful when people know how to enjoy the pleasant little things that surround them in everyday life.

Master class “Golden Autumn Wreath” (craft made from colored felt) Nowadays it has become very fashionable to make different wreaths from different materials.
Let's learn how to weave wreaths, skullcaps and hats from natural materials. Let's start with a regular wreath, we will weave it from fresh flowers. How to weave a wreath correctly depends on the flowers we are weaving from. You can weave a wreath from dandelions, clover or chamomile like this:
Take a flower, for example, a chamomile, place a second one crosswise on it, wrap the stem of the second chamomile around the stem of the first and lay it along the first stem, etc. See how to do this in the figure below. When the wreath is woven to the size of the head, the first and last daisies are tied together with a blade of grass - the wreath is ready.
If you want to weave a wreath from flowers such as water lilies, the stems of which are so thick and fleshy that they are difficult to braid, weave the wreath differently. Take a lily and, together with it, hold a flexible blade of grass or two blades of grass in your hand. Then take the second lily, place its stem crosswise on the stem of the first and braid the flowers with a blade of grass. Thus, you will weave a wreath of grass, weaving lily flowers into it.
Using this principle, you can weave wreaths from any large flowers, even roses, of course, having first removed all the thorns from them.
Very beautiful wreaths are made from flowers interspersed with leaves. You can weave a wreath from only leaves alone.
Interesting wreaths are made from leaves with bunches of bright berries woven into them here and there - rowan, elderberry and others.
If you want to make yourself a costume for a carnival of some fairy-tale figure, such as a goblin or a merman, you can put a wreath woven from horsetail with tufts sticking out in all directions on your head. A mermaid costume will go with a wreath of white lilies, yellow water lilies, or a wreath woven from long branches of white or pale pink bindweed.
DIY crafts made from natural materials from leaves:
Pick leaves from some tree that does not wither very quickly, such as birch, and braid them into a long garland using blades of grass. Having rolled the garland into a ring according to the size of your head, fasten the ring with a blade of grass and gradually lay out the garland in a spiral, fastening the blades of grass to each other and gradually narrowing them upward. You will get an interesting cap of green leaves. It will be reliable protection from the scorching sun on a hot summer day, and a good headdress at the carnival. How this is done - see the picture.
Burdock hat
A hat with a large brim that provides good protection from the sun can also be made from burdocks. Pick several large burdocks, almost to the base of the stem, place the burdocks together and use ribbon or blades of grass to tie them together by the remaining pieces of stems. Weave a wreath from blades of grass to the size of your head. Pierce each burdock with a twig in two places near its main vein and use blades of grass to attach the burdocks to the grass wreath. You'll have a cool, wide-brimmed hat that will stay on your head very well. To prevent such a headdress from quickly withering, spray it with water from time to time.
Burdock skullcap
And one more interesting example. From scraps of some fabric, cut four strips one centimeter wide, each the size of your head. Cut one strip three centimeters wide for the rim. First sew the headband, and then sew all four stripes crosswise to it. At the top, where the strips intersect, secure them with threads.
Then collect burdock flowers of different colors and place the burdocks one next to the other on the frame made. Make sure that there are no gaps between the burdock balls so that the fabric is not visible. Cover the band with burdock in two or three rows.

A wreath of leaves is woven in the same way as a summer wreath of daisies or dandelions. Just in case, here's a picture to make it clear how to weave.
Making a crown from maple leaves!
One autumn day I saw a couple walking along the sidewalk. The boy had something like this crown on his head, and the girl didn’t even have a wreath, but rather a kippah, but a very beautiful one, made of maple leaves... I then really regretted that I didn’t have a camera with me, and it’s a sin to take pictures of THAT on a phone. They really stuck into my consciousness with their spontaneity and carefree autumn light... |
