Master class on making autumn topiary with your own hands: we work with natural materials. Such a different topiary: stylish crafts from the gifts of autumn DIY topiary on the theme of autumn
Topiary (“tree of happiness”, “European tree”) is a small decorative tree that decorates interiors and exteriors, and is also often used for. Topiaries are good because they look very beautiful, and you can make them with your own hands in literally 1 evening from scrap materials.
- This means that you can make several jewelry at once, for example, one pair for New Year's table setting, another for Easter, and a couple more for the mantelpiece.
In this material you will find 1 basic instruction on how to make a topiary with your own hands for beginners, as well as 3 step-by-step master classes in addition to it and 45 photo ideas for inspiration.
Basic instructions for beginners
Topiaries of even the most complex designs are made according to approximately the same principle. Having mastered basic technology manufacturing, you can create a wide variety of topiaries, changing only the materials for decoration.
So, to make a mini-tree with your own hands, you will need to create it:
- Crown;
- Trunk;
- The base of the tree.
Step 1: Design Planning
Topiary can be different not only in design, but also in service life. Before you start work, think about why you need a “tree of happiness” and where will it live? The purpose and future place of the topiary will determine its style, color scheme and even materials for its creation.
If you want to make topiary for, then materials that are not too durable can be used - paper, napkins, sweets, fresh flowers, fruits. If you want to make topiary as a gift or for interior decoration, then it is better to use more reliable decor - pine cones, artificial flowers, coffee beans, ribbons, organza, etc.
In the following selection of photos you can get ideas for decorating themed and festive topiaries.
Sweet topiaries made from candies for a children's party
Halloween decoration with candies in a pot
Halloween decorations from pumpkin seeds, ribbons and sweets in tea cans
Easter trees made from eggs, artificial flowers, satin ribbons and moss
Christmas topiary made of artificial holly leaves and berries, pine cones and ribbons with a branch trunk
Candy tree for festive table

And here is a selection of photo examples of the design of exclusively interior topiary (scroll through!).
Step 2. Preparing materials
To make your own topiary you will need:
- Foam ball with a diameter of 8-12 cm(available at many office supply and art stores) or a floral foam ball (available at gardening and flower shops).
If desired, you can make a ball yourself from polystyrene foam, the same floral foam, polyurethane foam, papier-mâché, etc. However, the base of the crown can be not only in the shape of a ball, but also in the form of a heart, star, number, letter, animal figure, etc. Ave.
- Decor for the crown - depending on your idea, use flowers, satin ribbons, organza, coffee beans, banknotes, etc.
- Trunk - it can be made from a dry and clean branch, a simple pencil or any other stick. In addition, the trunk and pot can be replaced by a tall candlestick.
- Decor for the trunk– the barrel can at least be coated with matte varnish or painted. And at the most, wrap it with one or two ribbons.
- Flower pots – it’s most convenient to pour the mixture into a clay pot, but any cute cups, mugs, vintage buckets, etc. will also work.
- Fixing mixture– the best choice for making topiary with your own hands is a mixture of alabaster, as it hardens quickly, hardly cracks and is cheap. You can also use cement-sand mortar, gypsum or putty. However, not only binding mixtures can fix a tree in a pot, but also the same polystyrene foam, floral foam or stones.
- Everything for mixing the mixture– container, water, stick, etc.
- Decor for masking the fixing mixture– to create an imitation of soil cover, it is best to use natural materials: dry moss, small pebbles, expanded clay, sisal fiber. Artificial moss and rocks will also work. Pots of “edible” topiary can be filled with candies and jelly beans.
- Glue gun and several glue sticks- if necessary, it can be replaced with glue like “Moment”, but it is best not to do this, since glue in a gun is more convenient, and most importantly, it allows you to remove random “cobwebs”.
- Scissors or cutter.
- Tailor's pins with a very small head(optional, used in addition to or instead of glue, for example, for fastening beads).
- Side cutters or nippers for trimming the trunk or any decorative elements.
On preparatory stage divide the decorative parts for the crown into groups - for example, large, medium and small. This will make it more convenient for you to alternate the decor and distribute it evenly across the ball.
Step 3: Creating a crown
First, you need to apply markings to the ball - mark the place for attaching the barrel and mark a boundary around it, beyond which you do not need to go for some time when gluing the decor. Thanks to this technique, in the future you can easily fix the barrel in the ball without spoiling the decor.
As soon as the glue warms up, start shaping the ball in the following order: “trying on” the part without glue – applying glue to the desired place – fixing the part. Remember that you need to act quickly so that the glue does not have time to absorb into the foam. That is why it is better to apply and try on the decor first.
Here are a few more nuances:
- You need to stick the decor onto the ball starting from large elements and ending with small ones. For example, if you are making topiary from artificial flowers, then glue the largest buds onto the ball first, then the medium ones, and only then the small flowers and additional beads.
- Some decor can be secured to the ball using tailor's pins and nails. But it is best to combine carnations with glue.
- If some parts have bases made of wire (for example, the same artificial flowers), then you need to leave about 2 cm from their “tails”. Then you can not only glue the decor, but also stick it into the ball.
- To make the white base ball less noticeable in the gaps between the glued parts, it can be painted to match the decor.
Now we need to work with the barrel. As already mentioned, making it with your own hands is not at all difficult from a branch, pencil or any stick.
If you use a branch, then you don’t have to paint it, but just coat it with matte varnish so that the natural beauty of the tree is visible. If you use a wooden stick, then it can only be slightly tinted, artificially aged, etc. If you want to mask the surface of the trunk completely, then you can wrap satin ribbons, fabric, paper, rope around it, or completely paint it.
How long should it be? Since the trunk goes deep into both the pot and the ball, its length can be calculated using the following formula:
- Trunk length = 1/3 of the ball diameter + height of the pot + desired length of the trunk between the crown and the pot.
To attach the barrel, you need to use an awl and a knife to make a hole in the ball with a depth of about 2-3 cm (depending on its size) at the marking site. When the hole is ready, fill its bottom with hot glue and push the crown onto the trunk until it stops. Then continue holding the barrel and gradually fill the hole with glue around the barrel.
- Keep in mind that the hot glue will melt the foam and make the hole deeper. To prevent the trunk from going deeper into the crown by more than 1/3 of its diameter, small pieces of paper can be placed between the layers of glue.
As soon as the barrel is fixed in the ball, disguise the attachment point with decor.
Step 5. Preparing the binding mixture and fixing the tree in the pot
The time has come to “plant” the resulting tree in a pot. To do this you need:
- Place a mark about 2.5 cm from the edge of the pot - the mixture will be poured to this level. If there is a hole at the bottom of the pot, you need to close it with tape or hot glue.
- Dilute the mixture according to the manufacturer's instructions and fill the pot with it.
- Level and secure the topiary in the pot, holding its trunk until the mixture hardens.
- Leave the mixture overnight or a day until completely dry.
Hint: As already noted, it is best to use alabaster as a binder mixture. To fill 1 medium pot, you need to dilute approximately 1 kg of alabaster with 600 ml of water. The mixture is kneaded for about 1-2 minutes until the consistency of thick sour cream, and then quickly poured into the pot and the topiary is fixed in it for 2-3 minutes.
Hooray! The topiary is almost ready, all that remains is to create an imitation of soil in the pot and disguise the fixing mixture. If you are using sisal fiber (see photo), shells, artificial grass or moss, they need to be secured with a small amount of glue.
Master class 1. Corrugated paper topiary
Topiary with paper flowers is especially suitable for decorating a holiday table or festive decoration interior For example, this rose topiary was made for Valentine's Day.
Materials:
- Base ball with a diameter of 12 cm;
- Corrugated (creped paper) of medium density (in the master class we use corrugated paper in the form of a tape, but you can use regular rolls);
- Floral foam bars and/or any fixing mixture (see basic instructions);
- A flowerpot or flowerpot for the base of a topiary;
- The trunk is about 30 cm long;
- Dry moss for pot decoration;
- Ribbon for trunk decoration;
- Glue gun.
Step 1. Cut the corrugated paper into strips 60 cm long and approximately 4.5-5 cm wide. If the paper is too thick and stiff, knead the strips a little to make them more flexible.
Step 2. Now you need to roll the resulting ribbons into rosebuds. This is done very simply, just a couple of workouts are enough and the principle becomes clear. Take one of the resulting paper tapes and fold it 1/3 as shown in the photo below.
Then fold one end of the ribbon diagonally at a 45-degree angle and begin rolling it into a log. After three turns you will have the core of the bud. Now wrap the free end to the outside, and continue to roll the core of the rose - voila, you have the first petal.
Step 4. Once the crown is completely covered with roses, attach the trunk to it (see Basic instructions). In this master class, the barrel was pre-painted with white spray paint.
Step 6. Place dry moss on the “soil” and glue it in some places with thermal glue. Finally, tie a bow on the trunk.
The following selection of photos presents other topiary design ideas that you can make with your own hands using this master class, not only from corrugated paper, but also from satin ribbons, blank paper, etc.
By the way, you can make not only roses from paper, but also lush peonies or hydrangeas. Methods for making such flowers are easy to find on the Internet.
Unique topiary made of autumn leaves: golden decor for the interior
Leaf topiary – great gift for Teacher's Day or home interior decoration. You can arrange it in any way natural material Leaves are the easiest autumn material from which you can make crafts with your own hands. different plans. So is topiary, that is, an artificial tree that serves beautiful decor. There are several options for how to make a tree from leaves with your own hands; more than one master class is devoted to this. Some crafts will be discussed in more detail.
DIY topiary from autumn leaves: where to start
This craft does not require a lot of expensive materials, and the main elements are literally lying on the ground. So, collect a lot of beautiful, not very large, bright leaves. To make the color scheme impressive, take lighter sheets - as practice shows, brown and crimson ones do not look so elegant in topiary.
In addition to leaves, you can use rowan, viburnum berries, cones, acorns - any materials given by autumn nature
You will also need dry twigs and berries.
This master class also assumes the presence of:
- Pot-vase;
- Wooden stick;
- Foam ball blank;
- Spray paints;
- Hot glue;
- Thermal gun;
- Masking tape.
For this craft you will need two foam balls at once. You insert one of them tightly into the flowerpot, or better yet, secure it with hot glue. You need to stick a wooden stick into this ball and make it so that it touches the bottom of the pot.
To make an autumn tree you will need a flower pot, a base ball, a stick for the trunk, material for fastening and decor. Before decorating the crown, the base of the topiary must be fixed in the pot
- Surface of a foam ball, seal the one in the pot with masking tape. Paint the pot itself and the stick-trunk with spray paint. For example, golden, after all, the theme of topiary is autumn. Masking tape is needed to prevent the foam from becoming stained. Also protect the surface where you are working from paint.
- Place the second foam ball to the other end of the stick. This will be the basis for the crown. Leaves and twigs need to be inserted into the top ball to form a crown.
Very important point– you can make topiary from dry leaves, but its aesthetics will be in doubt. No, dry leaves also have their own beauty, but this master class still suggests processing the leaves with your own hands.
Maple leaf topiary: leaf processing
You can process the leaves with your own hands so that there is no need for artificial ones. It's no secret that many autumn crafts They are actually made from artificial leaves.
Autumn leaves are an exceptional decoration, which, unfortunately, quickly deteriorates. To prevent their premature drying, the material must be treated before use.
The master class suggests the use of glycerin:
- You need to make a solution from glycerin. To do this, take 2 parts boiling water for 1 part glycerin. Bring everything to a boil over medium heat, and then cool.
- The solution must be poured into a heat-resistant container, cover with a lid and shake well.
- Dip the stems into the hot solution so that it covers them by at least 7-9 cm.
- Place the container with submerged plants where it is cool and there are no direct sun rays. You will know that the glycerin has been absorbed when droplets of moisture appear on the leaves.
As you can see, the master class is not complicated, but the process of absorbing glycerin lasts at least 10 days, or even three weeks. From time to time you will have to check how the plants are doing. Glycerin penetrates into some of them faster. Sometimes dense stems are laid out with scissors so that glycerin penetrates into them more quickly.
When everything is ready, the leaves can be taken out for crafts; they need to be wiped with a dry cloth. True, you will have to dry the leaves. Some force things by removing the leaves hanging on a rope after a couple of days, others dry them for two weeks.
The leaves can be coated with waterproof colorless varnish. And after drying, you can definitely use it.

Topiary from leaves step by step: master class for beginners
Leaves prepared with your own hands can decorate a tree. The main task is not to disturb the harmony of the craft. And this needs to be done in such a way that the crown is rounded, the color transitions are natural, and the berries only emphasize the autumn mood of the topiary.
The master class continues as follows:
- Without additional decor, the topiary will be faded. Openwork ribbons and braid in the color of wood will do. The flowerpot can be decorated with beads and red buttons.
- Fix a couple of leaves on the trunk - only small and neat ones.
- Place cut yarn threads in a pot to match the crown. They will imitate an autumn carpet. You can also throw miniature cones and acorns there.
- At the foot of such a tree there may also be a small pumpkin, as another attribute of the autumn atmosphere.
To secure the sheet to the crown correctly, first the ball is punctured, a drop of glue is poured into the hole and only then the sheet is fixed
Just as appetite comes while eating, so here inspiration can come while working. You can complicate the master class with your own hands by adding different decor - bugs, dried flowers, artificial moss, etc.
You can also decorate a topiary from leaves in a school theme. Makes a great decor for a classroom or bright decoration your student's desktop
How to make topiary from rose leaves
A topiary of autumn leaves can turn into a bouquet of roses. How, you ask, and just as easy as the previous master class.
The crown of such a tree is made according to the same principle as the previous one. But instead of whole leaves, you will insert rosebuds
How to make such flowers? Once again, you will have to discard dry leaves; leaves treated with glycerin look more aesthetically pleasing.
But to make roses with your own hands you need:
- You need to fold the maple leaf in half so that the front side is on the outside.
- The leaf is rolled up, this will be the core of future roses.
- Around the first roll you need to line up row after row of petals. This time the front side should be on the inside.
- Bend half the leaf away from you. The bend line should be about a centimeter higher than the core roll.
- Once again we bend the sheet outward, without smoothing the fold line. The roll wraps on both sides.
- This is how all rose petals are made. Below, at the base of the flower, they are secured with threads. And this is how every rose is made.
Detailed photo instructions for making a rose from a maple leaf
If you decide to use dry leaves for the craft, then after work, spray them with hairspray. When rosebuds dry, they will not crumble or break. Just spray the buds of maple roses thoroughly, sparing no varnish.
The buds are attached to the base of the crown with glue using a heat gun. Such a tree must be made very carefully with your own hands so as not to deform the elements.
The pot can be decorated with birds, plants, fruits or animals - whatever suits your imagination
Crafts from roses are not only topiary. More than one master class is devoted to bouquets of flowers, jewelry, and additional decor for other works.
Topiary “Green Roses” made of maple leaves (video)
The master class loves experiments, work, get inspired, offer your own decor options. This tree can decorate your home all year round, being a great addition to a bookshelf filled with lyrics from great poets. Stylish and original, modest and unpretentious. Good autumn results, and skillful capturing of natural beauty!
Autumn gives us a lot of materials for creativity. These include leaves of various colors, chestnuts, dried flowers, acorns, and a decorative miniature pumpkin.
But, before you start making souvenirs from them, you need to properly prepare them, namely dry them and, if necessary, coat them with varnish or paint.
If you make a craft from unprepared raw materials, it will be a short-lived product.
As soon as the material dries on its own, the souvenir will lose its shape and will have to be thrown away. And besides this, half-raw leaves can simply rot or become moldy.
So let's start by drying out our autumn finds.
Let's prepare the leaves for the herbarium as follows:
1 way:
Place them between the book sheets and place them back on the shelf, pressing them tightly with other books to the side. In about a week to a week and a half, the leaves will be suitable for crafts.
This method is the best because natural color leaves do not change and then they for a long time don't break.
Method 2:
This method is good if you don’t have the strength to withstand a week and a half and want to get to work quickly. Place the sheet between two white sheets of paper and iron with an iron set to the lowest setting.
In this case, the yellow and red leaves retain their color, but the green ones may darken and become an ugly, brown shade.
We dry chestnuts, acorns and decorative pumpkins.
1 way:
Dry outdoors in the shade. It will be necessary to wait quite a long time before these materials acquire the dryness we need.
Sometimes this process takes a month. This is especially true for decorative pumpkins, which make wonderful DIY autumn crafts.
You will see for yourself when the moment of readiness for the gifts of autumn comes. Acorns and chestnuts will become lighter, and the pumpkin will become like a rattle, as the cavity inside will dry out and shrink, and dry seeds will beat against the walls.
Method 2:
We use the oven for this. It needs to be set at a temperature of up to 60C and dried until tender, stirring occasionally.
The main thing is not to rush and do not put on high heat, as the fruits will simply cook and become completely unusable.
Drying dried flowers
There is only one way and it takes a long time. Flowers need to be strung on a thread threaded through the stems and hung in a dry place, with the flower stems facing down.
Drying in a book or with an iron will not work, as the shape will be lost and they will become flat. After the dried flowers are completely dry, they need to be covered with a layer of hairspray. It will give them the desired density and will not allow them to crumble at the slightest touch.
Well, now, let's move on to specific master classes and examples.
1. Panel of autumn leaves
We offer you a great idea for a DIY leaf panel. It’s not at all difficult to make, but the result is quite impressive.
It would be nice if you placed other autumn decorative elements next to the finished leaf painting. For example, pumpkins, spikelets and other things that suit the style. Then you will have a whole autumn ensemble.
What we need for work:
- 1. Dried maple leaves of yellow-red color.
- 2. Tree branch for the trunk
- 3. A square piece of plywood
- 4. Stain or dark varnish
- 5. Simple pencil
- 6. PVA glue
- 7. A bunch of dry spikelets
- 8. Wicker basket for pumpkins
- 9. Several Jack Be Little or Baby Boo pumpkins
If you don’t have such pumpkins, you can fill the basket with chestnuts and acorns. But on next year It wouldn’t hurt to grow them, as they look very colorful and festive. Of course, if you have a plot of land.
Look at the variety of varieties and how harmoniously they combine with each other:
Master class step by step:
1 step. Sand the board, paying special attention to the edges. They should be smooth.
Step 2. Cover it with stain or varnish, preferably with a brownish tint. Apply the coating in several layers, trying to make the board not a uniform color, but a slightly “spotty” one.
Step 3. Freehand draw a large maple leaf.
Step 4 Start gluing on the maple leaves. Start from the edges, gradually approaching the middle. The edges of the leaves should match the edges of the sketch as best as possible. The next row of leaves should overlap the previous one. Do not glue the ends, they must be “overhanging” to create a volume effect.
Step 5 Glue the selected twig in place of the stem.
Now hang the autumn panel you created with your own hands above a cabinet and place other decorative elements around it.
2. Topiary from herbarium and other autumn materials
Topiary is a decorative tree. In autumn, you can collect beautiful leaves and make such a wonderful and cozy decorative element.
Any leaves, dried flowers, acorns, spikelets will be used here. The main thing is to understand the essence and do it the right basis. And what to fill it with - your imagination will tell you.
What we need for work:
- 1. Ceramic pot of a dull color
- 2. A straight tree branch for the trunk
- 3. 1 ball made of foam rubber, polystyrene foam or special floral foam
- 4. Dry moss, sesame or a handful of beautiful pebbles, acorns, dry rowan
- 5. Glue gun
- 6. Dry plaster
- 7. Decorative elements: herbarium, dried flowers, rowan, acorns, etc.
Master class step by step:
1 step. Let's start with the basics. Take a foam ball and place it on a branch that will serve as your trunk. Then remove it and drop some glue from the gun into the hole formed. Reattach the ball and let it dry.
Step 2. Secure the trunk in the pot. To do this, drop a drop of glue onto the free edge of the branch and attach it to the base of the pot.
Then, dilute the plaster with water to the consistency of liquid sour cream and fill the container. Don't forget that you will still need to decorate everything on top with moss or acorns, so leave a gap of about 3-4 cm from the top.
Step 3. Now we insert leaves and dried flowers into the ball, sticking them with their stems inside. If you want to add acorns to the composition, then first place them on pieces of wire.
Step 4 Now all you have to do is decorate the top of the pot so that the plaster is not visible.
That's it. Using this simple scheme, you can make a wide variety of autumn crafts with your own hands, not only from leaves, but also from dry peas, nuts and so on. They will all look just great!
3. Roses from maple leaves
Looking at this elegant bouquet of roses, you wouldn’t even think that it was made from ordinary maple leaves!
But, nevertheless, it is so. You just need to learn how to fold them correctly and you will get a great basis for many ideas.
Such roses can be included in various autumn topiaries, wreaths, compositions and panels. They look great in combination with any natural materials.
Well, let's get down to business.
What we need for work:
- 1. Maple leaves are not dried
- 2. Thread or soft wire
- 3. Matt varnish for hair
Master class step by step:
1 step. We form the middle of the bud. To do this, fold the sheet as shown in the pictures below. Try to twist it as tightly and evenly as possible. First in half and then into sausage.
As a result, we should have something like this:
Step 2. Now take the second sheet, fold it in half again and wrap it around the base.
Sharp edges maple leaves you need to carefully hide it inside, like this:
Step 3. We continue to build up the mass around the base, adding more and more leaves. If you want to end up with a bud, then twist it more tightly, but if you ate a more magnificent rose, then loosen the twist a little.
Step 4 When you see that a real rose has “bloomed” in your hands, you need to secure it with threads as tightly as possible.
Step 5 We trim the edges with scissors and place the rose on a lining of leaves, preferably already dry. We cover the composition with varnish and admire it!
These leaf roses last quite a long time, definitely enough for the entire autumn season. You can make as many of these flowers as you like. The more there are, the more chic this autumn composition, reminiscent of a fabric motif, looks.
4. Compositions of decorative pumpkins
Even if you do not grow this vegetable on your plot, in autumn time You can freely buy them on the market and then dry them yourself. We have already told you how to do this above, so let’s not waste time talking.
Let's get creative!
There will be no master classes in this block, we will simply show you examples of such decor, and how to make them is already quite clear from the photo.
Of course, there are more complex techniques, for example, carving or painting on dry lagenaria, but this is a broad topic and worthy of a separate article. Here we will consider only the simplest compositions that even a schoolchild can do.
Option 1. Basket with a scattering of pumpkins. It couldn’t be simpler, and the view is spectacular!
Option 2. Candlesticks made from mini pumpkins. To do this, you need to cut a hole with a knife of such a size that you can place a foil-based candle in it.
Or this option:
Incredibly simple, right?
Option 3. Pumpkin door wreath. Take any circle as a basis, for example, an embroidery hoop, and attach mini-pumpkins to it.
Pierce the tails with wire and screw it to the base, circle. Use berries, acorns, twigs and autumn leaves as additional decorative elements.
It will look something like this:
5. Chestnut topiary
To create this spectacular autumn craft with your own hands, we will need the same materials for the base as for creating a decorative tree from a herbarium. And for decoration you just need other elements.
For work we will need:
1. Ceramic pot
2. Styrofoam ball
3. Dry plaster
4. Glue gun
5. Tree branch for the trunk
6. Cones, chestnuts, acorns
7. Harsh thread or twine for forming decorative balls
Master class step by step:
- 1. We form the base of the tree in the same way as in the case of topiary from leaves.
- 2. Secure the base in the pot using glue and plaster
- 3. Apply drops of hot glue to chestnuts, acorns and other elements and attach them in a chaotic manner to the foam crown ball.
- 4. Wreath on the door made of chestnuts
Such a wreath of chestnuts on the front door will cheer up not only you, but also passers-by. It's very easy to make. Follow all the steps given to make a pumpkin wreath.
Find some kind of dense base, then pierce the chestnuts and other elements through the back side, insert the wire, form a hook and use it to screw them to the circle.
Complete the chestnut composition with leaves, acorns, berries and other autumn decorative elements provided by this fertile time of year.
6. Autumn garland “Leaves” made from salt dough
This is a very impressive DIY autumn craft. The big advantage of such a garland is that it is not seasonal and will decorate your home for many years.
After all, it is made not from natural materials, but from salt dough, which does not deteriorate over the years. The only thing is that such products are fragile and you need to handle them carefully so as not to break them. But, even if this happened, they can always be glued together, and the joint will not be noticeable.
What we need for work:
1. 2 cups flour
2. 1 glass of salt
3. 0.5 cups of water
4. Gouache
5. Sewing pins with hook eye
6. Twine
7. Oven
8. White landscape paper, pencil
Master class step by step:
1 step. We draw patterns of leaves of various types, but approximately the same size, on a landscape sheet. Let's cut them out.
Step 2. Knead a stiff dough from flour, salt and water. If the dough turns out to be unplastic, you can add liquid drop by drop. Knead the resulting material thoroughly and roll it out on a board. The layer should be approximately 5 -7 millimeters.
Step 3. Place the templates on the rolled out dough and cut them along the contours with a knife.
As a result, we should have approximately this many blanks.
Step 4 We make holes with pins and carefully secure the heads. We will hang our leaves on them. Use a knife to squeeze out the veins.
Step 5 Dry the dough in the oven at 50-60C until completely dry.
Step 6 We paint the dough pieces with gouache, trying to create natural tones and transitions.
Step 7 We string the garland onto a twine, making a knot over each leaf so that they do not move.
So our DIY autumn craft is ready. You can hang it anywhere, it will be in place in any corner of the house, especially if you have some other decorative elements in the autumn style.
7. Vases and houses made from ordinary pumpkins
Autumn is the time for pumpkins to ripen. It costs mere pennies and can be found beautiful shape and coloring is not difficult.
And making an element of autumn decor based on it is as easy as shelling pears! There's no need for any step-by-step technologies and accessories.
The only thing you need: pumpkins, a knife for carving, a tablespoon to pick out the pulp and flowers with which you will fill these colorful vases.
Look at our selection of photos of pumpkin vases. It looks very decent and autumn-like.
As you already understood, you just need to cut off the top and clean out the core of the vegetable. Then fill the container with water.
Or you can make pumpkin houses. To do this, you just need to cut holes in the right places. You can see exactly where they are located in the picture below. Kids love these things!
8. Wreath on the door made of natural materials
We have already given above an example of wreaths made of pumpkins and chestnuts. You already know how to make them. Here we simply present a selection of the most effective, in our opinion, ideas.
9. Acorn frame for a photo or mirror
Decorating any base in this way is very simple. We think no explanation is needed here.
The only thing we can advise is that you should not glue acorns with a glue gun or PVA. It's much better if you use plasticine.
Because, most likely, you will soon get tired of this decor and will have to throw it away. And so, you can always dismantle the acorns and get a regular photo frame back for use.
This is what it will look like.
On the photo frame there are whole acorns, and on the mirror there are only caps. This way you can create a variety of autumn crafts with your own hands and decorate any surface: boxes, bread bins, etc.
10. A bunch of grapes made from acorns
This autumn craft will look in the best possible way, if you paint the “berries” in natural colors, and instead of grape leaves add a herbarium of maple leaves of various colors.
Also, a bunch of acorn grapes is a wonderful element of any autumn door wreath or large topiary. After all, it can be made not only tabletop, but also human-sized!
But instead of a foam ball, you need to take a large plastic one. Making grapes from acorns is very simple, we will now tell you exactly how.
What we need for work:
1. Acorns without caps
2. Shilo
3. Wire
3. Glue gun
4. Acrylic paint
5. Autumn leaves for decoration
Master class step by step:
1 step. We poke holes in the base of the acorn with an awl.
Step 2. We break or cut the wire into pieces 7-10 cm long.
Step 3. Dip the ends of the wire into a drop of glue from the gun and insert it into the punctured holes.
Step 4 We paint the acorns any color you want. The main thing is that it is combined with leaves that will complement the composition.
Step 5 We collect acorns in a cluster, forming a wire rod on top. Then we attach leaves to it.
Now you can make any decoration based on this autumn craft. Panel, wreath, etc.
11. Autumn crafts from felt
Working with this fabric is a pleasure! The material does not crumble and holds its shape perfectly. This means that any beginner can make an autumn craft from felt with their own hands and it will turn out no worse than the products of experienced craftswomen.
We offer you a selection of the best and simplest decors in autumn style, and you can choose any of them! They are so simple that there is no need to describe their step-by-step technology in detail.
As you can see, based on felt leaves, you can make both a wreath and a garland, like the one we already made from salt dough. Here are a couple more options for DIY fall wreaths.
All you need is to draw the templates, cut out the felt and design it according to our photos.
12. Garlic and red pepper braid
How cozy it is when bundles of garlic, onions, and red peppers hang in the kitchen! But if you hang them fresh, they will very soon lose their appearance or simply run out because they will be eaten.
Let's do something like this, but for centuries! Now we will look at how garlic and pepper are made, from which we will form a nice braid for the kitchen.
For work we will need:
1. Nylon tights white or a plastic bag (for the garlic base)
2. Cotton wool or padding polyester (for filling)
3. White coarse thread (for dressing and forming lobules)
4. Glue gun
5. Buckwheat or twine (to imitate garlic roots)
6. Fabric for sewing peppers or salt dough for sculpting it
Master class step by step:
1 step. We form the body of the garlic. To do this we need to cut into squares or nylon tights or simple plastic bags. Garlic made from nylon looks, of course, more realistic.
But even from the packages it looks good. But the main thing is that this material is always at hand. So, cut out a square, approximately 7 by 7 cm in diameter.
Step 2. We roll a ball out of cotton wool or padding polyester, put it inside a piece of nylon and form a head of garlic. It looks like the one shown in the photo.
Step 3. Then we begin to tie a harsh thread around the head, forming cloves of garlic. First we divide it in half, then into quarters, then into 8 parts.
Look at the photo, the process is clearly shown there.
Step 4 In the place where the roots of real garlic are located, drop a drop of glue and sprinkle this place with crushed buckwheat. If you want, you can replace it with twine, which needs to be unraveled and finely chopped.
Step 5 We make a braid from twine and attach the resulting garlic cloves to it.
Step 6 Now it's time to deal with the pepper. You can sew it, but peppers made from salt dough look much better.
We have already given the recipe for the batch, in the subsection “Garlands of autumn leaves.” These are the peppercorns you should end up with.
Step 7 We make holes in the tails of the peppercorns (we will then thread twine through them and use it to secure them to the braid with garlic). You can do this with an awl or any available item.
The main thing is to make them large enough so that you can thread the thread freely later. Otherwise, after drying, you will in no way be able to attach the finished product to the composition.
And one more thing: if you make a hole, make sure that the edges of the leg remain more or less large. Otherwise, after you thread the thread, the thin walls may crack and the pepper will fall to the floor.
Step 8 Dry in the oven, color acrylic paint Once dry, coat them with varnish. When the pepper shines, it looks more natural.
Dry at a low temperature, do not rush, otherwise your work may burst and you will have to sculpt everything again. You can't paint a cracked pepper the way you would like.
9. Attach the pepper to the garlic and hang this autumn composition in the kitchen. You can make several such bundles. You can make carrots from salt dough, and a bunch of onions from brown tights.
The principle of making bulbs is the same as garlic, only even simpler. There is no need to form slices.
Also, a bunch of mushrooms on the wall will look great, which you can also sculpt from dough and paint realistically.
Ours has come to an end great review. You have seen many examples and any kind of autumn crafts with your own hands. We really hope that our master classes will be useful to you and that you will definitely take something into account.
Autumn topiary for kindergarten“Golden Hands” was almost entirely made by Artem Tikhonov (under the strict guidance of his mother). The idea is so simple and clear that it will be very easy for a 5-7 year old child to make a topiary with their own hands with minimal adult intervention, of course. Easily available natural materials were used: chestnuts, nuts, cones, acorns, shells.
Used homemade paper ball wrapped with twine. A styrofoam ball would also work diameter 8 cm.
The total height of the decorative tree is 26 cm, pot - 6 cm, crown diameter with decor - 14 cm. All you need to make children's crafts of this size is 2-3 hours.

Step-by-step master class with photos - do-it-yourself autumn topiary for kindergarten
Stage I. Making a ball and decorating a pot
For the autumn children's topiary “Golden Hands”, the easiest way to make a ball for the tree of happiness was chosen - from paper, newspapers and scraps. We increase the mass so that the diameter of the ball is equal to the pot, give it a spherical shape and wrap it with tape, and on top with twine. We fix the barrel in the hole in the ball with glue.
We use any plastic container, for example, a disposable flower pot. We decorate the surface with coffee or ice cream sticks and paint it thickly with bronze acrylic paint.
Stage II. Colorings
We prepare materials for decorating the crown: we paint the shells of the snails with gold acrylic, and the halves of the nuts with orange and, after drying, lightly powdered with gold. In addition, we paint the barrel in 1 layer with chocolate acrylic.
Acrylic-painted elements for the autumn topiary “Golden Hands” dry in no more than 15 minutes.
Stage III. Crown decor
Alternating, we glue large elements onto the crown:
- Dried chestnuts.
- Acorns with and without caps, separately caps.
- Painted halves of nuts.
- Painted shells.
- Dried cotton flowers.
We seal the entire surface of the ball, and close the small gaps with alder and larch cones. We glue decorative flowers and beige poppies all over the crown.
Stage IV. Autumn tree assembly
We plant the topiary with the finished crown in a pot, fix chestnuts and small shells in layers. Carefully glue each layer. At the base of the autumn topiary “Golden Hands” we glue dried flowers; We also add a few leaves to the crown.
To protect topiary made from natural material from damage by insects, lightly treat the finished tree with any hairspray.

Today I want to tell you how you can quickly and happily build a topiary with your own hands for beginners - as always, I will give several master classes and explain in detail how even a beginner in needlework can create a topiary with their own hands. Topiaries are a great gift; they are also used for decorating and scenting rooms, and such an artificial tree can also be a wonderful gift - for example, a topiary made from money will attract wealth to the house.
Satin ribbons
Let's try to make topiary from satin ribbons. If you know how to do it, then it will be very easy for you, but even if this is your first time taking up ribbon topiary, you will succeed. So, I’ll tell you about the experience of making topiary from satin ribbons with your own hands.You will need:
- about six meters of satin ribbon (no narrower than 5 cm, it’s better to take several colors);
- threads, beads, and ribbon for decoration;
- glue gun or regular superglue;
- a stick or a piece of plastic tube for the barrel;
- pot or bucket;
- material for the middle - a fabric bag, crumpled newspaper or a foil ball;
- earth, pebbles, crushed stone (I used colorful glass for an aquarium).
We make 12-15 roses from satin ribbon. You can use several shades of ribbon (for example, three or four), or you can get by with one shade - when I made topiary younger sister to decorate the wedding photo booth, I used a beautiful satin ribbon ivory.
We make the middle - for example, we crumple up foil or old newspaper, wrap it with threads to make a tight shape. You can wrap it with ribbon, but there is no need - satin roses turn out quite lush.
The trunk can be made from a branch, a plastic pipe or any suitable stick. In extreme cases, dense wire, folded in several layers and wrapped with tape, is suitable. Wrap your trunk with tape, and then glue the trunk to the crown of the tree on one side and to the pot or bucket on the other.
We string a couple of beads onto a thread and “sew” the beads and a satin rose to the topiary. It should be sewn or glued firmly. When the entire ball is covered with roses, you need to prepare the trunk and pot.
You need to pour a weighting agent into the bucket, straighten all the flowers, and, if necessary, decorate with a decorative ribbon.
From coffee
We will also make a coffee tree with our own hands. To make topiary from coffee beans you will need:
- base ( plastic ball, foam ball - sold in craft stores);
- trunk (branch, stick, tube);
- a pot or something instead (I had a beautiful clay jar last time, but now I have a regular glass);
- coffee beans (you shouldn’t skimp - good coffee has an indescribable bright aroma);
- solution for fixing (I use regular putty, plaster, alabaster, or even cement will also work);
- brown acrylic paint;
- glue gun and glue sticks;
- newspaper or scrap paper;
- burlap or other characteristic fabric;
- decor for decorating a coffee topiary with your own hands.
Money
By the way, using the same logic as using coffee, you can make a topiary out of coins with your own hands. Look at the photo to see how beautiful it is to make part of a topiary out of coins, and you will get a money tree topiary. You can use regular coins and paint them with gold paint, or you can buy special decorative coins (they will shine brightly).The manufacturing principle is the same as for a coffee tree - you need to take a base, cover it with paint, first cover it partially with coins (you can do it with a lock - as if coins are shining from an open wallet), and then cover it with coffee and fix it in a pot. Unbleached linen and burlap go well with this tree as decoration.
Topiary made from banknotes also looks very interesting, but I won’t lie - I have beautiful topiary I haven’t made one out of banknotes yet, I’m still working on a tree out of banknotes with my own hands, so if you want to make a money tree out of coins or a tree out of banknotes that attracts wealth, then watch the master class on how to make a money tree with your own hands.
The kusudama-style tree is also interesting - see how to make topiary with your own hands following step-by-step instructions.
Video bonus: two master classes on how else you can make an original money tree from banknotes:
From napkins
A chic topiary made from napkins with your own hands is made literally from nothing, you will need:- several bright napkins;
- base ball (plastic or foam);
- branch or stick;
- gypsum (any mixture for fixation);
- titanium glue or any polymer glue;
- pot or glass;
- stapler and scissors;
- various ribbons and lace, decor and paper for the pot (can be replaced with fabric).
So, how to make a tree with your own hands from ordinary napkins:
- First, we make ordinary flowers from napkins and paper clips - we fix the napkin folded several times with a stapler, cut it out in a circle, and crumple it into petals.
- You will need 15-20 flowers, if there are not enough, you will make more, but usually this amount is enough for a lush and beautiful topiary tree of happiness.
- We cover the ball with a napkin, wrap the barrel with ribbon, and dry it;
- We cover the ball with flowers from napkins, skillfully weaving decor into your tree from napkins with our own hands - it can be lace, beads, bows and even plastic figures; small wooden letters or words on topiary look very attractive;
- We dilute the gypsum and “plant” our tree - we immerse the finished topiary with its trunk in the pot and fill it with gypsum, hold it until it sets.
Now you know how to make a tree of happiness with your own hands and you can decorate such products to your taste.
Cones
By the way, you can make a very beautiful topiary from pine cones, especially since it is quite easy to do. What is needed to make topiary from cones:- pot or glass;
- stick, branch, tube - trunk;
- a round base for topiary - you can take a foam ball, you can cut it out of polyurethane foam, in extreme cases, crumpled newspaper wrapped in threads will do;
- lumps (preferably bigger);
- brown acrylic (preferably glossy, dark);
- fabric for decorating a glass;
- decor to decorate your topiary made of cones - beads, threads, buttons and so on;
- gypsum or any building mixture for fixation;
- glue gun and rods for it;
- scissors, brushes.
We start making topiary from pine cones by decorating the glass - we cut the fabric diagonally (this way it drapes better), and we tighten it, gluing it with a gun. By the way, do you want to avoid unsightly glue marks? Glue it where it won’t be visible (on the bottom and inside the glass, and the walls should just be covered).
We prepare the base - fix the stick to the ball, paint everything with acrylic (it’s better to cover it with newspaper first).
We cover the ball with cones, let it dry and fix it in a pot - for this we dilute plaster, dip the trunk of our tree and hold it until the plaster sets.
You can decorate topiary from pine cones in different ways, I prefer beads in natural shades.
You can decorate your pine cone topiary with ribbons, hang artificial berries or even small figurines on the cones.
Beads and beads
You can also make a charming topiary from beads. It’s easier to understand how to make a tree from beads with your hands, so watch the video below on how to make a topiary from beads. By the way, a craftsman can make absolutely anything from beads - including decor, for example, berries that can be used to decorate a money tree made of beads.
Now you know how to make an artificial tree with your own hands step by step. I admit honestly, every topiary made by yourself is something special, and you will understand what it will be like only when you start decorating it. Try making festive trees and ordinary modest trees for the interior - those that are laid out with pine cones and coffee beans can not only decorate the room, but also flavor it (you can add a couple of drops essential oil).
And my sister makes money topiaries with her own hands, which lure money into the house; I will publish a tutorial next time - for now I can only show from photographs what such products look like. Try making your own topiaries and surprise your loved ones with unusual gifts!
