Design a photo frame using the winter quilling technique. Step-by-step instructions “How to make a frame with your own hands” for quilling
Quilling is a type of handmade that is fashionable today. This type of needlework is distinguished by its relative simplicity of execution and the ability to produce various objects that will decorate everyday reality. For example, quilling allows you to make decorative elements with your own hands that will transform the interior of your home.
The word comes from the English "quill", which means "bird's feather". This is a technology for creating beautiful interior decor that looks elegant and atmospheric. The art of paper rolling has been known since the Middle Ages in Europe. Nuns or noble ladies practiced this craft using a bird's feather with strips of paper curled at the tip.
It was often gilded around the edges and made it possible to create various crafts, for example, panels and icons, medallions or even carpets. From such paper it was possible to make jewelry that looked exactly like gold.
Modern technology involves rolling ordinary colored paper, which is first cut into narrow strips. Then they are given the desired shape and the resulting figures are glued together to create full-fledged products.
This decor is suitable for festive decoration apartments. You can add unusual items decorated using quilling. Craftsmen use not only paper, but also other materials. These may well be strips of wood, fabric or plastic.
Remember, if you decide to hang a panel or photo frame made using quilling on the wall, they should not be exposed to straight lines. sun rays. Otherwise, the paper may simply burn out.
Features of the technology
The technique of “twisting paper” is not difficult for most people who want to master it. It includes the following features:
1. Narrow paper strips are rolled into a tight spiral. To make this convenient, use an awl, the tip of which is wrapped around the edge of the paper. Craftsmen sometimes use special tools that have a forked end that carefully grips the material.
2. After forming the spiral core, you can work without using an awl anymore. Your own fingers will help you, since you can check how uniform the roll is by touch.
3. The result is a dense spiral of small diameter. It is the basis for creating various forms.
4. The spiral can be unraveled to the size required by the master. A figure is formed from it, and the tip of the paper must be grabbed with a drop of glue.
If you master the basics of technology, the rolls can be given almost any shape. In addition, they can be compressed and left indentations if the overall composition requires it.
In total there are about thirty elements for quilling. But, one way or another, they apply the same principle: they roll it up, pinch it, and then give it the desired shape, using their own imagination.
Let's consider various products, which can be made using quilling technology. These can be souvenir boxes and flowerpots, wall panels, holiday decorations, etc.
Photo frames
A photograph on the wall in the bedroom or living room looks elegant and unusual if you decorate the frame with petals and flowers made from curled strips of paper. Original patterns allow you to refresh even the simplest and most unattractive frame.
Boxes and cans
Quilling allows you to decorate various boxes and jars. Unusual elements will make familiar objects that are found in the kitchen, living room, and bedroom sparkle in a new way. You can decorate your desktop by decorating pen and pencil jars. Boxes with fancy patterns look great, in which you can put cosmetics, jewelry, etc.
Lamps
Quilling is used to decorate the lampshades of table lamps and various lamps. Floral motifs and geometric shapes - spirals of any type give the lamps an unusual appearance. This is a great way to make a lamp that looks a little vintage. In addition, table lamps decorated with rolled paper will look great in an oriental-style interior.
Toys for children
For children's decorations based on quilling not only look beautiful and interesting, but can also have a very practical function. For example, if your child is learning the alphabet, you can make three-dimensional paper letters and hang them on the wall for better memorization.
This technology can be used to create holiday decorations. Numbers made from twisted stripes will be an excellent symbol of the date of birth or the number of years of the birthday person. In addition, you can make the child's name out of spirals and hang unusual panels and cards on the wall, as well as place them in a frame. This allows you to create a unique festive atmosphere.
Fairy-tale characters and animal figures, abstractions and compositions with geometric shapes- This is an interesting educational decor that is perfect for a nursery.
Watch
In a cozy home you will always notice many original stylish details, such as a clock. Unusual product You can make it yourself using quilling technology. The main task is to install a working clock mechanism. You can easily buy it in a specialized store or order it online.
However, such difficulties are associated only with creating products from scratch. You can refresh the appearance of a finished or even old watch that already has a mechanism. Design features will depend on your skills and imagination.
Panel on the wall
Decorative panels can be made of paper, plastic or wood. No need to search ready-made options, if possible to make various options on one's own. These can be multi-colored inscriptions, thematic compositions that are suitable for a specific room. If you try and take the time to make a large-scale panel, you will even end up with a whole map of the world made of paper spirals.
Kitchen decorations
You can decorate walls and shelves using kitchen accessories decorated with quilling. This allows you not only to enliven the interior, but also to connect its parts into a single whole. Panels with a coffee theme in colorful colors will look impressive, which will become an additional boost of energy and make the kitchen design aesthetic and atmospheric. Popular are wall decorative plates that can be decorated with colorful paper ribbons.
Flower pots
Vases and flower pots look original with voluminous paper figures. Twisted ribbons can be glued to a vase as an additional decoration. You can make a variety of decorations that fit inside the pots or attach to the top. Floral patterns are the best option for creating products using this technology.
Holiday decor
A real work of art is Christmas decorations made using the quilling technique. There is nothing easier than twisting strips, but this method allows you to make fancy figures that create a New Year and Christmas fairy tale in your home. Look original easter eggs made from multi-colored paper.
Beautiful ideas for quilling - photos
This technology has many secrets that are worth mastering so as not to spoil the beautiful figurines. Remember that the main things in creating such jewelry are patience, accuracy and the desire to express your own creative ideas. But the main point in making decor for your home is that all the details look harmonious together and match general style interior We invite you to look at photographs of products that you can make with your own hands!
Modular origami. Quilling. Master class
DIY paper photo frame.
Master class with step-by-step photos.
Purpose. Interior decoration, DIY gift.Ovchinnikova Svetlana Aleksandrovna, teacher of OGKOU SKOSH No. 39, Ulyanovsk.
The master class will be useful for middle and older children school age, educators, teachers. The material will be of interest to everyone.
Target: creating a photo frame with your own hands.
Tasks:
- systematize the ability to work with paper and cardboard;
- development fine motor skills hands;
- formation of a strong interest in creativity, volitional sphere;
- cultivate accuracy in work.
1. I propose to make such a photo frame.
2. We need:
- office colored paper format A-4: 5 sheets each of yellow and blue - for modules, a little bright yellow, red, green, white (30 cm long);
- transparent film, quite thick (for example: textbook covers, packaging film);
- cardboard - thick and ordinary for child labor or paper for watercolors;
- regular ruler and with circles different sizes;
- compass;
- tweezers;
- scissors – manicure, stationery and curly (you can do without them);
- quilling tool;
- PVA glue;
- a little patience and a good mood.
3. To make the frame, you need to prepare the modules. Fold a sheet of A-4 paper in quarters along the long side and in quarters along the short side. I fold it in half first, then each piece in half again.
4. Using a breadboard knife, I cut 2 sheets at a time (I don’t fold the second one). The pieces measure approximately 5.3cm x 7.4cm.
5. Fold the module. Fold in half along a short line.
6. Fold in half along the long side and straighten, marking the fold line.
7. Unbend and turn upside down.
8. Fold the edges towards the middle.
9. Raise the edges up.
10. Fold the corners over the large triangle.
11. Unbend the lower part and fold the corners along the intended fold line.
12. Raise this part up again.
13. Fold the workpiece in half. The module is ready.
14. To make a frame with a diameter = 21 cm, you need: yellow modules - 80 pcs., blue modules - 70 pcs.
15a. We connect the modules as in the photo.
15b. We connect the yellow modules together (not very tightly), gradually rounding them, giving them a circle. We don't use glue!
16. It turns out a circle of yellow blank with a diameter of about 23 cm, now we connect the modules more tightly, giving the correct circle. Result – diameter 21cm.
17. Similarly, we assemble the blue modules. At first the diameter is 21 cm, after compression it is 19 cm.
18. Let’s start making “glass”. From transparent film, cut out a circle with a diameter of 18 cm. I have film from butterflies, purchased at the “Everything for 38” store. They were attached to her. Advice! Using a compass, draw a circle on any cardboard, this will be a template. Otherwise, a puncture from the needle will remain on the film.
19. We connect 3 blanks. Apply PVA glue to the yellow circle along the inner contour as close to the edge as possible. Glue the “glass”. The film is completely transparent, but no matter how hard you try, the ceiling is reflected in it. Sorry for such photos.
20. Apply PVA glue to the edge of the yellow blank so that it gets on both the film and the modules.
21. Glue the blue circle. Press more firmly so that the glue sets. This is the front side.
22. Wrong side.
23. Cut out a circle with a diameter of 19 cm from cardboard. You can cut it with curly scissors. I took a cardboard package of watercolor paper.
24. On the wrong side of the yellow circle, apply PVA glue to the bottom half.
25. And glue the cardboard blank. This will be a photo pocket.
26. Stand according to the diagram.
27. Cut along solid lines. We draw along the dotted lines with a creasing needle (knitting needle or the tip of small scissors). This makes the cardboard easier and neater to fold. And fold it as in the photo.
28. Glue it. I advise you to glue the stand at the very end of the work. Otherwise it will be difficult to decorate the frame.
29. Let's start making flowers to decorate the photo frame - 3 daisies, 2 red and white flowers and 2 green twigs.
For 1 chamomile, cut white office paper 3 cm wide, 30 cm long - 2 pieces and 1 yellow strip 1.5 cm wide and 30 cm long. Cut into fringes in a way convenient for you. We glue these blanks together lengthwise.
30. Using a quilling tool, roll up the roll, starting with the yellow stripe. Glue the tip. Turn the flower over and fill it a little with PVA glue.
31. For 1 red – white flower cut 8 red and white strips, 5mm wide (3mm is possible), 30 cm long. Glue 1 red and 1 white strip.
32. Using a quilling tool, roll up the roll, starting with the white stripe. We unravel the roll using a ruler with circles up to a diameter of 20 cm.
33. From the center, pull the roll towards the edge with tweezers.
34. Turn it towards you and from the top, use your thumb and forefinger to connect the edges, as if around the tip of tweezers.
35. Glue the ends together and clamp them with a clothespin.
36. Glue the petals together to form a flower.
37. For the middle, prepare a strip of yellow paper size: 1cm. x 30cm. Cut the fringe. We divide in half. Roll half of it into a roll.
38. Ready flower.
39. Green stripes – 5mm x 15cm – 5 pcs. Glue them together from one edge into a stack. Let it dry a little and screw it onto a toothpick until it ends. Unravel, form the length of the strips. We cut along a short strip and glue the edges. I glued the edges of the top curl to show how it turns out. The bottom one is the final one.
It's no secret that for large-scale work (for example: quilling, origami, trimming) you need deep frames, which are not sold in any store. And in some places they are sold, but expensive. Once I tried to order a deep frame, before placing the order, they recalculated it - from 800 rubles! Here I refused, of course. Then I saw such frames in the Korean center - they are also not cheap there: the average frame is 800 rubles, the largest is 1200 rubles.
I accidentally saw how you can make such a frame from an ordinary one. Here . True, I finalized this idea and also corrected some errors (albeit small ones).
To make such a frame, we will need:
1. Cardboard (preferably hard, but not too thick). I pasted watercolor paper on top of thin cardboard and pressed it for an hour. I received a fairly thin and stiff cardboard with a beautiful texture (thanks to watercolor paper).
2. Glue
3. Scissors (or cutter)
4. Shilo
5. Metal ruler
So, we take a regular frame with glass, in our case, 15x21 cm.
We take out the backing, it will not return there again (or stick background paper on it).
We remove the glass for a while and throw away the paper.
We measure the width and length from the inside (wrong) side of the frame. In our case: 15.1x21.1 cm.
An important point: when drawing up a drawing on cardboard, we remove the width and length by a millimeter (this is so that when connecting the box to the frame, the corners do not wrinkle, especially if the cardboard is thick and the connection will be tight). Carrying out a mathematical operation, we get exactly 15x21 cm. Then we add the necessary cm on all sides (this will be the depth). Since the frame is small, I added 2 cm. Agree, a small frame will look unnatural with great depth. And the depth depends on the volume of the fake itself that you are going to place in this frame. In our case: I plan to do not very extensive quilling work, so 2 cm is enough for me. Red lines are cutting lines. But if the cardboard is too thick, then remove the small squares in all corners.
We go along all the lines with an awl to make it easier and more accurate to bend.
An important point: we draw and pass with an awl NOT on the front side of the cardboard, which will serve as our background, but on the back.
Turn the cardboard over to face you and make folds on all sides.
Glue the corners. The box is ready. You can start decorating the background with tinting and various details (quilling, origami, whatever).
Now we need to glue the glass to the frame (tightly). To do this, we line the inside of the frame with glue, as shown in the photo (see below).
Glue the glass.
My MK is shown from start to finish, but without adding crafts to the background, so before connecting the box (background) to the frame, you need to prepare the background with the crafts (decoration, finishing touches). AND important point: We carefully wipe the glass from the inside, because if we glue the box to the frame, then we will suddenly discover that there are telltale particles of dust and fingerprints on the inside of the glass! Agree, it will be difficult to fix. :)
The box with the craft is prepared, the glass is cleaned. Use glue to draw a thin line on the glass on all sides...
And on the sides too.
We connect the box with the frame.
Make sure everything is glued neatly :)
And our deep frame is ready! (though without the crafts inside) :)
On the advice of Larisa Anatolyevna (many thanks to her!), who left a comment below, we do not throw away the backing from the frame; we paste onto it a background made of non-thin paper (for example, for watercolors) larger than the backing itself (taking into account the depth of the frame). Then we draw and bend the walls as described above. The big advantage of this method: we get to work with a durable backing and fastenings (and a leg), we can hang or stand.

In this tutorial I want to show you how to make photo frames, using flowers, performed in quilling technique. This frame looks very beautiful and unusual, and can serve a great gift to your loved ones and friends. For children, this is the development of taste, imagination, motor skills, and sensory skills.
First step.
First we will make a frame for it need:
Frame from cardboard box, cut to size photo;
Corrugated paper, any colors, for frame decoration;
Cardboard for the reverse side;
PVA glue, scissors.
1. Cut out the frame;
2. Cover with corrugated paper;
3. Cover the reverse side with cardboard coated with glue only on three sides, so that the fourth side can be inserted photo.
4. The frame is ready.
Second step.
Let's do flowers. To you need:
Paper " color mix" (color copier paper A-4);
It needs to be cut into strips to length. sheet:
1) Wide - 1.5 cm or 2 cm wide (the wider the strip, the more flower) ;
2) Narrow - 0.5 cm for the core.
Glue (you can use a glue stick);
Toothpick.
Manufacturing flowers:
Screw a narrow strip onto a toothpick and secure it with glue so that it does not unwind; you will get a core;
A wide strip must be cut along its entire length, leaving an edge 0.5 cm wide uncut;
Screw the cut strip onto the manufactured core and fix it with glue;
It will turn out unblown flower, which needs to be straightened;
To make using this method flowers in any quantity and any colors.
Third step. Frame design.
- flowers distribute over the outside of a pre-prepared frame and glue them with PVA glue to your taste (you can completely cover the entire frame)
It turns out very beautifully, and there is no shame in giving it as a gift.
Photo frames can be not only good decoration interior, but also a wonderful gift for loved ones. You can buy them at any store or make them yourself from scrap materials. The most accessible material in this case can be considered paper.
To make a DIY quilling cardboard frame for a photo, we will need multi-colored cardboard, a glue gun, PVA glue, a stationery knife, quilling paper, and a quilling tool.
We start by drawing the size of our future on the inside of colored cardboard.
Then we take a knife and carefully cut it out.
Now you need to take a glue gun and glue together a whole sheet of cardboard and a blank for the frame. You need to apply glue to the very edge of the whole cardboard so that there is room to place the photo. Another advantage of using a glue gun is that it creates a small space between the sheets of cardboard, where the photograph will be placed in the future.
Now you need to make a stand for the frame. To do this, take cardboard and cut out a shape from it as shown in the photo. We bend the edges of the figure so that the middle remains about a centimeter wide inside.
Apply glue to the back of the middle and glue the stand to the frame.
Now you can start decorating, which will be made using the quilling technique. To do this we need to take a quilling tool. If you don’t have one, you can very easily make it from a regular toothpick.
To do this, take a knife and carefully cut the edge of the toothpick. The tool is ready.
Now we begin to make flowers; to do this, we hold the edge of the paper in a toothpick and fold it into a loose circle.
Then press one edge of the circle to make a drop. These will be our petals. Don't forget to glue the edges of the PVA paper.
Using PVA glue, we assemble a flower of six petals, and decorate the middle with a simple yellow circle.
Let's make other flowers. To do this, twist a loose circle, and then bend the two edges up, pressing the middle inward.
We complement this flower with green droplet leaves and connect it with another flower with a strip of green paper.
In the same way, we make a flower of a different color and attach it to the top of the frame. From green paper, folded together several times, we make a leaf, which we attach to the bottom one and complement the composition with another leaf and a twig.
Glue together several green strips and attach them to the base. We bend the branches, imitating a vine. Don't forget to fix everything with glue.
At the edge of the top branch we attach small flower from simple circles.
The frame is ready. If desired, the decor can be supplemented with more details.
