Description of knitting an elf hat. Detailed knitting pattern for a baby elf hat for different ages
In the 1940s and 50s, a baby hat called the “Elf” was at the height of fashion.
In this version, the hat is crocheted in one piece, folded in half and sewn at the back, to which a narrow strip is then sewn along the bottom edge, securing the hat securely to the baby's head.
For a hat, choose a soft blended yarn; for example, so-called sock yarn is perfect for it.
Size 3-12 months and 1-2 years
You will need:
Baby Wool yarn, Alize brand (40% wool, 40% acrylic, 20% bamboo, 175 m / 50 g) - 100 g peach (color code 449)
Knitting needles No. 3.25-3.5
Buttons on the stem with a diameter of 1.5 cm
thick needle
Elastic band 2/2 (number of stitches is a multiple of 4+2 for symmetry): 1st r. (and all odd rows): k2, *p2, k2**, from * to ** repeat until the end of the row; 2nd r. (and all even rows): above persons. knit faces, over purl. - purl
Elastic band 1/1 (number of stitches is a multiple of 2): 1st p. (and all odd rows): * K1, P1. **, from * to ** repeat until the end of the row; 2nd r. (and all even rows): above persons. knit faces, over purl. - purl

19-64 (70) rows: continue knitting until there are 2 stitches of 2/2 elastic band left in the center of the row, adding the number of stitches. smooth along the edges of the river. by 2 stitches and decreasing the number of elastic stitches. Cut the working thread and fasten.
Back seam: place the first 49 (53) stitches on a knitting needle, pointing the working end towards the middle of the work and sew a knitted stitch “loop to loop” on the open stitches.

This hat was very popular in certain years. Often, as we know, fashion returns and it's time to wear a knitted elf hat again.
A version of the children's elf hat is knitted with a 2x2 elastic band. It is a rectangle folded in half and stitched. A strap is added to the result so that the hat sits firmly on the baby’s head.
To knit an elf hat you will need:
- yarn (100% merino - wool, 155g/347m);
- knitting needles No. 3.25;
- button
Knitted elf hat size for ages 3-12 (12-24) months. it will be 33-35 cm at the base of the neck, and 22-24 cm to the top at the back.
Product density:
36 p.x36 r. = 10 cm
The elf knitted hat can be changed in size. You just need to add loops in multiples of 4, knit as described until the remainder of 2 elastic loops in the middle of the hat.
Collect it according to the description.
When you add 4 loops, the height will increase by 8mm.

19-64 (70r): we knit until there are 2 loops left with a 2x2 elastic band in the middle, making 2 loops at the beginning and end, reducing the number of elastic loops.
Cut and fasten the thread.
Slip the first 49 (53) stitches onto the extra needle. Sew the loops starting from the middle.
How to make the neck of an elf hat with knitting needles.
Cast on 10 loops. Tie 30.5 (32.5) cm with 1x1 elastic
Make a hole for the button.
1st row: 4 loops, knit stitch behind the front and back walls of the loop, purl 1, pull the 2nd loop on the right needle through the last one, 1 knit loop behind the front and back walls, 3. pull through the last 2 loops on the right needle. We continue until the end of the row.
*Knit 7 rows, repeat the button hole, repeat from *.
After 40 (42) cm, close the loops.
To complete the girl's elf hat, sew the side edge of the neck placket to the cast-on edge of the hat, starting from the cast-on edge of the placket and the right edge of the hat.
All that remains is to sew the button onto the placket.
Your knitted elf hat is ready. The beauty of this style of hat is that it fits snugly to the head, and thanks to the clasp, it does not lag behind the ears.
I also stopped at the same point.
We do not take into account the words “Cut the thread and fasten” for now. I don’t cut the thread, I will use it to close the row, i.e. "stitch" the cap. The seam will be on the top of the cap.
According to the description, we will drag the first half of the loops (how many loops you cast on, divide by 2) and drag the result onto an auxiliary needle with an open end towards the middle of the work. And the same number of loops on another knitting needle with an open end (this is what I do and advise you to do).
We put the knitting needles together side by side (as if one) and with the third knitting needle we close the row in the usual way to the end with knit stitches, but we grab 2 loops together (as one) from two auxiliary knitting needles and thus we close the row (instead of stitching with a needle).
Connecting knitted fabrics on 3 knitting needles
Is this clear? It will be a beautiful seam.
And then decorate the strap, but in my experience, in order for the hat to fit to the neck according to the size of the neck, you need to tuck it in a little (I remember I did this so that it wouldn’t puff up on the child’s neck). Here you have to see for yourself how to do it beautifully and not reduce it too much and not spoil the pattern.
I'm off to bed now, and I'll come back in the morning to check your results.
I'll probably try another version of the plank, I haven't thought about it yet, because... I have a hat for a baby, so I need to think about it some more.
There is another stitching option, it is completely invisible (I am attaching a picture)
Connecting parts with a horizontal seam
When connecting parts with a horizontal seam, the structure is not disrupted and the elasticity of the knitted fabric is maintained. The seam on the product is invisible. Insert the needle into the first loop of the lower part from the bottom up, then insert it from the top down into the first loop of the upper part and out through the next loop, then insert the needle into the previous loop of the lower part and out through the next loop. Then insert it into the previous loop of the upper part and repeat in this way until the intended end of the seam. In this case, the thread must be tensioned so that it lies in the shape of a loop, as when knitting with stockinette stitch. (Fig.2)
