Original women's belt with your own hands. Do-it-yourself dress belt made of fabric: we sew a stylish exclusive accessory at minimal cost
At all times, representatives of the fair sex try to keep up with fashion, look well-groomed, stylish and attractive. Through clothing and accessories, makeup, and hairstyles, girls and women express their inner mood, emphasize their natural advantages and correct shortcomings. Most often help to create a special and unique image various accessories, which needlewomen create even at home: earrings, watches, belts and belts, chains with interesting pendants, bracelets. How to sew a belt for a dress with your own hands from fabric? Quite simple.
The dress is perhaps the favorite among women's outfits. Even the simplest dress with a belt can instantly make a woman’s look stylish and individual, giving it a twist. In the fashion world, there are three main forms of belts: soft, hard with a buckle (belt) and figured.
Soft belt
For a fun creative process you will need:
- meter;
- textile;
- threads, needle, scissors, chalk;
- interlining;
- accessories;
- decorative elements (if you want to create a bright evening look).
Stages of the creative process:
- Using a meter, you need to take the main measurement - waist circumference. Double the resulting figure. You also need to take into account 2 cm for allowances and 4 cm for the fastener. Thus, it turns out: belt length = waist circumference x 2 + 2 cm + 4 cm. The width of the belt can be any, it all depends on the model of the dress and individual preferences.
- Based on the obtained dimensions, cut out the product. It is best to cut the belt according to the width of the fabric, since the weave of the fabric along the weft thread is more elastic and it will be easier to shape the belt.
- Next you need to cut out the interlining and glue it to the product.
Nonwoven- This is a non-woven material with glue on one side. With its help, you can add additional density to the fabric and fix the shape so that the product does not deform when worn. The length of this part will be equal to the length of the belt. You can glue the interlining to the wrong side using an iron and remove the excess.
- Fold the product in half lengthwise and iron.
- The belt folded in half with the right side inward must be sewn along one short edge and along the entire length along the cut.
- Carefully turn the product right side out and stitch the remaining side slit. After this, iron the belt well.
- Manually sew buttons (or other selected type of fastener), if they are provided in the intended model.
Such a belt can be decorated, for example, as in the photo above. Then the image will turn out romantic and elegant.
Classic belts can be made not only narrow, but also wide, the main thing is not to forget to reinforce them with non-woven fabric. These accessories can be secured at the waist using snaps, buttons, Velcro or hooks. Or you can sew a belt without fasteners, just tie it. This option is perfect not only for a dress.
Decorating these things is a separate niche for creativity and imagination. You can decorate them with beads, rhinestones, buttons, chains, beautiful appliqués and embroidery.
Wide option
Wide belts are very popular among fashionistas. They favorably emphasize the waist, hide some figure imperfections and add glamor to the image. Sewing them is a little more difficult than soft classic ones, but it’s still worth the effort. The result will fully repay the efforts.
- First you need to cut out all the details of the future belt: two central parts for the belt and four parts for the ties.
In addition, in order for the belt to keep its shape and not deform during wear, both central parts will need to be reinforced with a grosgrain ribbon. Its length will be equal to the length of the belt minus two centimeters. To calculate the length of the belt, the waist circumference must be divided by half. The width of the belt according to the figure will be of two values: at the widest point, and at the narrowest point.
The ties should be cut out in the shape of rectangles 6 cm wide plus 2 cm for allowances. To calculate the length of the ties, you need to add up half the waist circumference and the estimated length of the ends.
It is important to add 1 cm to seam allowances around the entire perimeter of the waistband. Below is a diagram to make it easier to cut out the central parts of the product.
- After the pattern is ready, all the details of the future belt should be transferred to the wrong side of the fabric and carefully cut out.
- Next you need to sew the ties. To do this, fasten the edges with a pin and stitch along the part. On one side, the edges of the ties are slightly rounded. Turn them right side out and iron them lightly.
- Sew the grosgrain ribbon to the center pieces.
- Place the ties on the front side of one of the main parts of the waistband. Place the second main piece on top of the first with the front side facing inward. Fasten them with pins and secure the ends of the ties so that they do not move during sewing.
A small part of the stitching should be left, since through it the belt can be turned right side out. And then sew the left hole.

Our master class will tell you in detail how to sew a belt with your own hands.
How to sew a belt: types of belts and preparation for work
How to sew a belt with your own hands? In general, belts vary in how they are fastened: they are simply tied or they use some kind of fastening hardware. A variety of buckles, hooks, buttons, buttons, etc. can be used as such accessories.Belts that are supposed to be tied are usually much longer than belts with a fastener and, accordingly, you will need more fabric to sew them. You should add at least 40 cm to your waist circumference, and it is best to first tie a rope, ribbon or centimeter around your waist, select the length of the ends of the belt after the knot that suits the model, and measure the total length.
For a belt that will be fastened with a buckle, add about 15 cm to the waist circumference measurement and punch holes: one exactly according to the waist circumference, and several others in increments of 2.5-3 cm.
Belts that will be tied are not additionally reinforced in any way, unlike belts with buckles and shaped belts, which must be backed up with a rigid adhesive cushioning material. If such material is not available, you can use adhesive interlining, ironing it in several layers.
The tie belt and belted belt are basically rectangles, while the shaped belt is shaped slightly curved to fit the shape of the body. Most often, such a belt is fastened with buttons or it can be made with eyelets installed at the edges and tightened with lacing.
So, let's find out how to sew a belt with your own hands!
Belt with ties
Fold the waistband piece in half, wrong side inward. Pin along the entire length.
Sew, leaving the seam along the long side open.
Unfold the piece, placing the seam in the middle. Press seam allowances to the sides.
Depending on the desired shape, sew the short sides. Cut the allowances: in the corners obliquely, in semicircular places - in triangles.
Hand sew the hole in the center seam using a blind stitch.
Belt belt
Reinforce the front part of the belt with cushioning material, without taking into account allowances.
For a semicircular edge, baste, departing 2-3 mm from the contour.
Pull the edges together and press. Pull the inner part (without reinforcement) a little more, by 2-3 mm.
If necessary, cut off pieces of the allowance with sharp scissors.
For a triangular edge, press the seam allowances as shown in the photo.
Fold the seam allowances into a triangle and baste. Bend the allowances of the internal part (without reinforcement) a little more, by 2-3 mm.
Baste both waistband pieces, placing the inner piece in the center of the outer (slightly larger) piece.
Sew along the edge of the inner (smaller) piece.
Everyone is probably familiar with the situation when it is so difficult to choose a belt for any item!
But if there is a sewing machine in the house, then this problem can be easily solved))) Sewing a belt is not a difficult task, so even a novice craftswoman can handle this work.
For the belt you will need:
- textile
- rings or half rings for steel belts - 2 pcs.
- adhesive interlining
- hard seal
- ruler, scissors and other sewing supplies
The belt must keep its shape, so it is important to seal it from the inside. For this purpose, hard seals are used, such as a seal for lambrequins, a side seal (it resembles hard thick felt), or thick non-woven fabric, folded several times.
First you need to determine the length of the belt - measure your waist and add another 35 cm.
Cut out a strip of fabric of the calculated length, the width is determined by the desired width of the belt, multiplied by 4. That is, for a belt 4 cm wide, cut out a strip 16 cm wide.
If the length of your fabric is not enough for the entire length of the belt, then you can cut out two parts and sew them as follows: place two cuts perpendicularly and stitch diagonally. Trim the excess fabric from the corner and press the seam on both sides.
Cut out a piece from adhesive interlining that is the width of your fabric piece and 2.6 cm shorter in length. Place the interlining on the fabric, leaving free edges on both sides (1.3 cm each). Using an iron, glue the interlining to the wrong side of the fabric.
Fold the free edges inward and iron.
Fold the workpiece in half lengthwise to determine the middle, and bend the edges of the belt towards the center along the entire length.
Now cut out the part from the hard seal. The width is equal to the width of the future belt (if the seal is quite thick, then reduce the width by 2-3 mm so that it fits inside the belt), the length is equal to the length of the fabric blank minus 5.2 cm. If the length of the seal is not enough to cut out the part, then you can cut it out two and, placing the edges on top of each other, sew the blanks with a zigzag seam:
Unfold the belt blank and place the seal inside it at one edge. We place one end of the seal exactly under the side hem; on the second edge there will be a section for which there is not enough seal:
Fold the waistband in half along its entire length and iron:
Now stitch the workpiece around the entire perimeter with an allowance of 3-5 mm.
Today, the belt has practically lost its functional purpose; most often it is used as a decorative element that can not only complement clothing, but sometimes completely transform it beyond recognition.
This is a very important element that radically changes the image. Today you wear your favorite dress, tomorrow it is complemented by a cute chain, the next day you complete it with a corset - as a result, we have three completely different, but equal in style, sets of clothes.
Before we start working on this accessory, we need to decide what we want. There are many cases when it may be needed, as many as the models of this accessory themselves. Take your time to buy fabric for your work. First, answer for yourself:
- For what purpose is this accessory needed (under an evening dress, for everyday wear, complement business attire);
- The style should be universal or only for a specific dress;
- Must perform a decorative function or maintain shape.
Depending on the answers you receive to your questions, you can determine which type of belt is most suitable for you.
Made from fabric
Before you start working on this wardrobe item, you need to stock up on:
- Meter;
- A piece of fabric (for a colored dress - a single-color piece of fabric, with a plain dress - you can conduct experiments);
- Sewing kit (scissors, needles, threads, chalk);
- You will need a sewing machine;
- Prepare the decor (if you plan to make an addition to the evening dress);
- Stock up on grosgrain ribbon;
- Prepare the interlining.
Once everything is prepared, let's start creating a belt for everyday wear.
The procedure for working on it is very simple, let's look at it step by step :
- Let's take measurements from the waist and multiply the resulting number by two. For example, if your waist size is 90 centimeters, then we make it one hundred and eighty centimeters long.
- We make a cut of fabric of 180 centimeters, make the width so that it is twice as wide as the finished product and add another centimeter to this. If we plan to make a product five centimeters wide, then we make the workpiece eleven centimeters wide.
- You need to measure half a centimeter from the top and bottom of the workpiece and draw lines.
- Next, you need to fold the workpiece in half along its entire length. The lines must match. We sew our workpiece along the lines. We do not touch the second side; it remains unsewn so that we can turn out our future belt.
- Once the product is turned right side out, you can sew up the remaining incision.
You can start praising and congratulating yourself! Our accessory is ready. You can tie it with one knot or two bows, or you can use a tie tie. The belt is quite simple, but unique and stylish. If the belt is black, then this is the most versatile option. This belt can be worn with any clothing.
From satin ribbon
The technology for working with a satin ribbon is no different from creating a belt from fabric.
All we need is: sewing supplies, satin ribbon desired color and a naturally active creative spirit.
- Take your waist measurement and multiply by two .
- We cut a strip of satin to the required length; the width, as in the first case, will be twice the planned width of the belt and add another centimeter.
- From both edges we retreat half a centimeter and outline .
- Next we sew along the entire length along the lines.
- We turn the belt inside out and sew up the end left earlier.
- All that's left to do is tie it beautifully on a dress!
In order to choose the right style and color of a dress with a belt, you need to know the following rules. They have long become traditional.
- The thin belt is universal; it will suit any figure and most clothes.
- The corset is quite functional. On the figure he is very impressive. With its help, you can emphasize what should be emphasized, and hide all the shortcomings.
- How simple the clothing is, so bright and expressive a belt can be for it. An openwork texture, inlay with buckles, rivets and patterns would be quite appropriate. But for a bright ensemble, a discreet belt is required.
- A plain wide belt will look good with multi-layered clothing full of details.
Be sure to have several different belts in your wardrobe that will decorate, complement and expand your outfits.
IMPORTANT. The same dress or any other ensemble can look completely different, transforming completely, depending on which belt is worn. It is better to have few sets of clothes than to have few belts.
Such a simple element will not only diversify your wardrobe, but also embellish your figure, making it more presentable and stylish.

We sew a simple fabric belt for every day
The process of creating such an accessory is elementary. Let's look at it step by step:
- Using a measuring tape, take the waist size and multiply by 2. For example, with a waist size of 65 cm, the required belt length will be 130 cm.
- We cut out a strip of fabric 130 cm long and twice as wide as the width of the finished product plus 1 cm. If you need a 5 cm belt, then the width of the workpiece should be 11 cm.
- We measure 0.5 cm at the top and bottom of the strips and draw thin lines with chalk or dry soap.
- We bend the belt in half lengthwise and, placing the lines next to each other, make a machine stitch. It should start from one of the sides of the belt and continue along the drawn line. There is no need to sew up the second side of the belt, since we will turn our product inside out through it.
- Turning the belt right side out, sew up the side incision.
On this you can congratulate yourself - the belt is ready. It can be tied with a regular knot, two bows, or a tie knot - as your imagination dictates. The accessory turned out to be very simple, but stylish and for any occasion. A black belt is universal, which can be worn with a sundress or dress of almost any color, and it can also subsequently decorate trousers and skirts.
We sew a fabric belt for an evening dress with our own hands
I now have a simple belt in my wardrobe, but I also want it for evening dress choose a worthy accessory. This is also easy to do, although it will require a little more time and patience. Today in fashion wide belts on clasps, such as in the photo. This is what we will be creating.
To sew such a belt, measure your waist circumference. Since it will be on the fastener, you need to add 4 cm to this measurement for it, as well as 2 cm for the seams. Such a belt will fit snugly and securely on your figure. In order for a wardrobe item to keep its shape, it will need to be reinforced with non-woven fabric, which may result in shrinkage of 1-2 cm, which must be added to the final length of the product. Thus, with a waist size of 60 cm, you will need 68 cm of fabric in length. It is best to choose a width of 5-6 cm. Large ones can cause discomfort when worn.
The stages of creating a belt are as follows:
- Cut out a strip of the required length and width. How to determine the length is now clear; the width is determined in the same way as for a simple belt;
- Bend the belt in half and draw a midline with chalk or soap;
- Now we sew the corsage ribbon from the inside out as follows. The length of the tape is equal to the length of the belt minus 2 cm, which we took for the seams, the width is 2 cm less than the width of the belt. Those. If the finished belt width is 5 cm, the width of the grosgrain ribbon should be three. With the help sewing machine sew the tape from the inside to one part of the belt, retreating 1 cm from each edge;
- We fold the belt in half with the wrong side out and sew it on three sides, just like in a regular belt;
- We turn the belt right side out and carefully sew the edge that remains unsewn;
- Now all that remains is to sew on buttons, hooks or decorative fasteners - you can choose any option. The belt is ready.
The finished product can be decorated with beads, rhinestones, fabric flowers, appliqués, and embroidered with beads and bugles. There are countless decor options and each will add beauty and sophistication to the accessory.
