Patchwork in the interior (80 photos): how to assemble a puzzle from multi-colored patches? We sew a patchwork blanket with our own hands. A children's patchwork blanket with our own hands.
These days there are a huge number of techniques for needlework. Recently, the patchwork technique has been increasingly used. Products made using the patchwork method look very unusual, but at the same time elegant. A patchwork blanket is perfect for decorating a boy's or girl's nursery. You can make such a product yourself. All you need is a specific fabric pattern and a little patience.
Before starting work, you must decide on the choice of fabric. The choice of material will depend on the style of the room. It is desirable that the color of the pattern and furniture be the same.
Experts advise giving preference to cotton. This material does not shrink after washing and retains its color for a long time.
DIY patchwork quilt for a newborn: step-by-step instructions
You can sew a patchwork quilt for a newborn at home. To sew in a patchwork style, you will need thread No. 45, a square template made of cardboard or plastic, pins, needles, chalk, measuring tape, scissors.
Pay special attention to the choice of fabric. If you are sewing a blanket for newborn babies, use cotton materials. Chintz, linen or calico are suitable.
In addition, before you start sewing, decide on the material for the insulation. Experts recommend giving preference to batting or padding polyester. These materials cannot harm the health of the child.
A blanket for children should be sewn in the following order:
- First, cut the fabric into individual pieces using a template. It is advisable to number all pieces of fabric.
- Sew all the square pieces into strips and then connect them together. Iron the flaps before sewing them together.
- Pin two pieces of fabric together and stitch them together.
- Place the lining face down on the surface. The dimensions of this workpiece must be at least 5 cm larger than the shreds.
- Place a layer of batting or padding polyester on the lining. Place the facing material (shreds) on top.
- Pin the blanket together.
- Stitch the blanket using a special darning foot.
- The final stage of making a blanket for children is edging. To carry out this operation you will need 4 strips. The length and width of the strips should be a couple of centimeters larger than the dimensions of the blanket.
- Sew the strips to the edges of the blanket.
- Finally, hand stitch using strong threads.

Baby Quilts: Sewing Techniques
The most common patterns for sewing patchwork quilts are “Honeycomb”, “Arable”, “American Square” and “Checker”. Typically, a baby blanket is sewn using the Honeycomb technique. A product made using this technology looks very attractive and fits harmoniously into the interior of a children's room. This technique involves making one decorative element from 7 hexagons, which have different colors.
The “Arable land” technique is the simplest and is perfect for beginners. To make a blanket using this technique, you will need pieces of fabric that will be cut into separate strips.
The sewing pattern for the “Arable land” type is as follows:
- The blanket area is divided into 3 identical sections, the boundaries of each should be located at right angles to each other.
- Then each section is divided into parallel strips.
- All stripes are numbered.
- Stripes with the same number must be the same color.
The American Square pattern uses a sewing technique in which all the colored stripes are sewn in a spiral around a small square. Typically, this technology is used in the manufacture of contrasting products. “Chess” is also a common technique. It involves sewing strips of fabric from squares of different colors.
Caring for a Quilt
In order to save nice view When making a patchwork product, you need to follow some rules. First of all, a patchwork blanket needs to be washed properly. Experts do not recommend washing too often. It is recommended to wash such items by hand in soapy water.
To avoid damaging the fabric, it is important to iron the blanket correctly. If you used padding polyester as a filler, ironing is prohibited. Otherwise, the blanket will lose its texture.
- If you need to hide the blanket for a while, do not fold it. It is better to roll the product.
- If you decide to machine wash your blanket, use the most gentle setting. Optimal temperature water for washing a quilt 35-40 degrees. Spin must be turned off.
- Using bleach to wash a quilt is strictly prohibited.
Patchwork blanket for babies (video)
Making a quilt for a child is quite simple. To do this, you do not need to go to any master class. Just stick to the basic rules of patchwork. It is very important to maintain the symmetry of the squares when working. Otherwise, the blanket will turn out ugly, and the baby is unlikely to like it. When choosing fabrics, pay attention to the fabric. Give preference to natural cotton fabrics, because they are non-toxic and not harmful to the child’s health.

Many needlewomen try themselves in such a difficult technique of doing things as patchwork. And of course, very original things made using this method attract attention. Our grandmothers always used this technique when creating patchwork quilts. So how to sew a patchwork quilt for beginning needlewomen? You can use the patterns or watch DIY sewing workshops.
How to sew a blanket from scraps
Sewing blankets from scraps with your own hands is very interesting activity, which is fascinating and takes a lot of time. The main thing is that to make such things you can use old fabrics or things that you have not worn for a long time. Therefore, blankets made from scraps are comparatively cheaper than those purchased from a factory.
If you don’t have any old items, you can buy scraps of fabric at the store or use patchwork kits on sale. When creating a patchwork quilt with your own hands, patterns can be easily found on the Internet, and from their description, it is clear that they recommend choose at least 6 different fabric colors.
Choosing filling for a quilt
Since the products are different, the filler required is different. They consist of at least 2–3 layers:
- Beautifully designed top.
- The filler, or as it is commonly called, the insulation of the blanket.
- The bottom part of the blanket is called the lining.
It is worth noting that if you create a patchwork quilt with your own hands without a second layer, then you will succeed very beautiful bedspread. Most often, it is customary to use synthetic winterizer as a filler or insulation. This material does not shrink or deform after exposure to water. And this quality is perfect for creating things using the patchwork technique. But, if you want to sew a baby blanket for a newborn, then it is better to resort to using only natural materials in production. Here several natural-based fillers for sewing a patchwork quilt:
Tools and materials for sewing a blanket using the patchwork technique
This technique of sewing is becoming very popular nowadays. More and more specialized sewing stores are offering kits for free sale for sewing with patches and patterns. But you can also assemble all the equipment yourself, because many tools are found in every home’s sewing drawer. In order to start practicing this needlework technique, you will need to stock up on this list the right tools and materials:
- Well-sharpened scissors or a quilting knife.
- Sewing needles.
- Threads.
- A simple pencil.
- Tailor pins.
- Measuring tape in centimeters.
- Tailor chalk or soap.
- Paper.
- Sewing machine.
- Material for flaps.
- Natural insulation for blankets.
- Lining.
DIY baby quilt for girls
Products using this technique can be created for both girls and boys; all you need to do is simply change the color of the fabric. To create a baby blanket for a girl, use the necessary pink shades cotton fabrics and use natural insulation as a filler.
When creating a patchwork quilt, you can watch a master class for beginners on the Internet to get a rough idea of what kind of work you have to do. As it became clear from the video, novice needlewomen often use the chess patchwork technique.
Materials for production:
- Scissors.
- Threads.
- Fabric in two shades of pink.
- Paper.
- Pencil.
Take paper and draw a diagram according to which we will cut and sew a baby blanket for a newborn. As a rule, a small square blanket measuring 120 by 120 cm is sewn for children. Cut out a square from the paper with which you will cut. Use the diagram to count how many squares there are different fabrics you need, and start cutting.
Cutting out the fabric distribute the flaps in a checkerboard pattern. And start sewing the pieces of fabric together, ironing each seam from the inside with an iron and steam. As soon as the top fabric is ready, iron it properly and begin basting the insulation. Distribute the batting or wool over the surface of the product and baste it by hand, it will be more convenient, then sew on a sewing machine so that the fabric does not bunch up.
Quilt the blanket along with the insulation along the existing seams from the flaps. Sew each square, this will allow the insulation not to bunch up and keep its shape during use.
From one solid piece of material, cut out the lining for the bottom of the baby blanket. And also baste and stitch on the machine, three sides and half of the fourth. Carefully turn out and hand-sew the remaining portion of the blanket. That's it, the beautiful baby blanket for a newborn girl is ready and can be used for its intended purpose.
Patchwork baby blanket using the well technique
When creating patchwork quilts with your own hands, photos of sample works can be viewed on the Internet. When you see a product made using the technique of joining flaps called a well, you definitely won’t be able to pass it by. Remember the main rule for sewing: when stitching, the patches should go to the side precisely from the center of the product. So, creates the right visual effect.
In the photo, you can see that it is best to take larger shreds, or, more precisely, not huge, but long. It would be better to say that it has a regular rectangular elongated shape.
Step by step instructions to make such a product it will look like this:
- Take a sheet of plain paper or whatman paper is much better, and draw a diagram as shown in the picture with your dimensions.
- Each element is drawn in life size on separate sheets.
- Lay out all the stencils that will be used to cut out the flaps on the fabrics. For sewing using this technique, it is best not to overdo it with the number of colors; two quite contrasting colors will be enough. We add about 1 cm of allowance to each piece to sew the parts together.
- After cutting out the elements for making a blanket is completed, we recommend laying out the entire drawing from them in the assembly to see what happens and whether you did everything correctly. Take fabric for cutting on a cotton basis, and, of course, the same texture.
- Baste the parts together and iron them properly, so that later it will be easier to sew on a sewing machine.
- Connect all the squares of the structure together using a sewing machine, press all the seams on the inside.
- Now add a second layer of insulation inside and stitch it along the existing seams on the blanket. Since we are making a baby blanket, the insulation must accordingly be natural, this has already been discussed above in the article.
- Then we cut the back side out of the lining material and sew it to the product.
That's all, the master class on creating a baby blanket for newborns using the well technique is finished.
Master class on sewing a children's patchwork quilt with panels
Your baby will really like this educational blanket. After all, various elements will be collected on its surface that can be touched and felt. And most importantly, children learn about the world by putting into their mouths everything they can get their hands on, and he can chew this blanket calmly, since we will make it only from natural fabrics and materials.
To complete this master class you will need the following materials:
- Cotton fabric in different pastel colors to create the front part of the product.
- Natural based insulation.
- Lining.
- Multi-colored material with cartoon characters, and regular plain material different colors, it is best to take all the colors of the rainbow.
- Large buttons.
- Pieces of fur.
- Threads.
- Scissors.
- A simple pencil.
- Sketch paper.
Algorithm for creating a patchwork product:
- Take the main fabric and cut it into shreds, there is no need to be overzealous with drawing up a pattern or ornament, the main thing and interesting thing in this technique will be made as a panel at the top.
- Having sewn the top of the blanket, iron it carefully along the seams and stitch it to the insulation.
- Sew a lining at the bottom for our lovely baby blanket.
That's it, one part of the work is ready, we made a patchwork quilt in pastel colors of different shades so that the overall background does not stand out in any way, and the panel looks beautiful and bright against its background. Now let’s think about what we want to see on top of the product, for this we take paper and pencil and begin to fantasize.
In the center we need to develop the main plot, for this we can take scraps with cartoon characters of the same size and sew them on top of the blanket. So, we will have beautiful cartoon characters that your baby will then fall in love with. Along the edges of each patch with cartoons you need to put a thick canvas so that the baby, lying on such a beautiful blanket, can touch it and develop his fine motor skills.
Now let's expand storyline in the corners of the product, since we have already thought through the center of the panel. We have four corners that need to be somehow played out for the benefit of the baby’s development. For example, in the first corner you can place various geometric shapes different colors.
When sewing them onto a blanket, you can put a little cotton wool inside the squares and triangles, so they will become voluminous and beautiful. The baby will touch them and remember the shape, and the mother, playing with him, will tell what geometric figure it is and its color. The entire perception of children is laid down from childhood, even if it seems to you that they don’t listen or remember anything, but this is not so, then you will wonder where they could get this knowledge from when you start talking and remember the wonderful blanket created with your own hands.
The second corner can honorably be occupied by a small clearing of flowers, so to speak, a flower bed with clearly defined flower tops and leaves on the stem. To create such beauty we can use very large buttons for the center of the bud, and small ones for the petals. Draw no more than three flowers on the sketch, it is better to make them large, it will be more interesting for the baby to play with them. When making such a panel on a blanket, remember that you need to sew all the details more than once, since the kids will pull and bite all parts of your panel.
Flowers will be made from buttons different sizes, We recommend simply sewing the stem from green material, but the leaves need to be made as convex as the geometric shapes; when sewing on the parts, place a little cotton wool inside. You can frame the bottom by creating a flower pot or vase from the material.
The third corner can be decorated by creating a bunny or a pussy from the material; on top of the parts you can carefully sew pieces of fur onto the body. While playing with such a panel, the child will stroke the animal and understand that it is soft and fluffy, so we can teach him how to stroke it, and not tear the hair out of animals. You can sew an applique of a cat, a bunny and a bear. Whatever you want and can do, the main thing is to remember that you are trying for your own baby.
In the fourth corner you can create unique pockets sewn onto the blanket. The baby can put toys or something else small there. Or do something else, if you have any other ideas, this is your blanket and you can do whatever you want with it. Sew on large zippers to fasten and unfasten with your baby.
By performing master classes on making patchwork products for our kids, you will plunge into the world of childhood, so beautiful and extraordinary.
The technique of sewing from pieces of fabric is called patchwork and is recognized as one of the types of decorative and applied art. It is no longer considered a purely utilitarian trend, when the poorer sections of society used waste material to make a patchwork quilt with their own hands or other necessary household items. Patchwork has become an art - it is used to make bedding and kitchen utensils, curtains, branded clothing and even colorful panels.
Quilting or patchwork
The technique of making things from scraps can be called quilting. Beginning craftswomen cannot always figure out how it differs from patchwork.
Although the techniques are similar, there are differences. Patchwork is a narrow concept; it implies patchwork sewing itself. Quilting literally translated from English means “stitching” (stitching). It combines two or more techniques, including embroidery. The products are voluminous thanks to the stitching. So a blanket sewn from pieces of fabric with your own hands, even the simplest one, is still made using the quilting technique, which includes patchwork.
You can sew anything from scraps of fabric, for example, extremely practical things, or realize your wildest ideas, letting your imagination fly free. One of the patchwork techniques is called “crazy” (“crazy”), however, it is too complicated for beginning craftswomen.
Sewing from scraps with your own hands is not easy. The work requires time, perseverance and accuracy.
Accessories and tools for needlework
Patchwork requires a certain set of tools. Below is a comprehensive list, there may be something you don't need:
Making patterns
It only seems so - we randomly cut pieces of fabric and sew anything from the scraps with our own hands. Patterns in patchwork play the same role as a pattern in creating clothes. It is with their production that work on the product begins.
The same templates can be used repeatedly, so to create them, use durable material, preferably transparent plastic, through which you can see the fabric pattern. First, the desired element is drawn (square, rhombus, triangle), then a seam allowance is added and a second contour is drawn.
The finished template looks like a frame. The details of the future product are cut out along its outer contour, and stitched along the inner contour.
Selection and preparation of fabric
It is not necessary to use a special patchwork fabric for needlework - any fabric you like will do. Maybe, necessary materials there will be pieces at home - pieces left over from sewing clothes or old, but not dilapidated things. Each fabric its features:
Synthetic padding or batting is used as a gasket (middle layer).
Any fabric need to be prepared before cutting, otherwise during operation the product may fade, shrink, or warp:
- Old items are ripped open, all seams are cut off, and the hem on new fabric is cut off.
- The next stage is washing. If this is not a problem with cotton and denim, then wool and silk are laid out in one layer on a wet sheet or towel, rolled into a roll and left for 2-3 hours.
- It is advisable to starch thin material.
- The damp fabric is ironed from the inside out along the grain thread. It is better to use an iron with a steam generator.
Rules for creating products from scraps
Patchwork is a rather complex art. Here you can’t “take it and do it.” You need to plan everything clearly, follow the sequence of actions and not break the rules. Interestingly, it is better to start with making large things. Sewing a bedspread is much easier than, say, an oven mitt, and the work will take the same amount of time.
Idea and sketch
There are patchwork kits on sale, consisting of a minimum set of tools, pieces of fabric, ready-made patterns and detailed instructions. But they are expensive, and coming up with a pattern yourself is much more interesting. If you do not use ready-made kits, you can get exclusive item, while simultaneously unloading the house from unnecessary scraps and old clothes.
There are many techniques patchwork, for example:
- with simple blocks - English Park, Quick Squares, Butter Dish;
- sewing according to a pattern - Solomon's Riddle;
- based on Monkey's tail, Russian square;
- crazy;
- blooper or yo-yo.
You can come up with ideas yourself, look at them while working on the Internet or with photographs. The easiest way to make a blanket from scraps is to make it yourself. In addition, it will be useful in the household, will amaze others, and the craftswoman will be able to understand whether it is worth doing patchwork or whether it is better to switch to something else.
First you need to create a sketch. A color wheel can help with color selection. At first, it is better to choose a simple pattern of squares and use fabrics of the same texture in several prints. It is best to cut out one block of scraps, lay them out on a white sheet and check that the colors match harmoniously.
Then a diagram is drawn on which the shape and dimensions of the parts will be indicated, and the numbers assigned to each group of patches will be indicated. Based on this, the number of parts is calculated.
Correct cut
It will be easiest for beginning craftswomen to sew a patchwork quilt from elements that are the same in shape and size - squares, rectangles, triangles. In order for the product to look neat, all fragments must be equal in size. This is what templates are for.
The pattern is applied to the fabric, the boundaries are outlined with chalk or soap. You need to cut the part along the outer edge and sew along the inner edge.
The amount of seam allowance depends on the type of fabric - the denser it is ( fine wool, jeans) or more complex in cut (silk), the larger the indentation is needed. Drape, thick wool is cut immediately according to inner edge template. If you sew the parts together, you will end up with a thickening that can ruin appearance finished product. This fabric is stitched end-to-end in a zigzag pattern, but it is better to first “plant” the fragments on pieces of non-woven fabric and stitch the edges.
When cutting, the direction of the grain thread must be taken into account - for squares it should be parallel to one of the sides, for triangles it should be perpendicular to the base. If you neglect this requirement, the finished product will warp.
Assembly sequence
The assembly of complex products must be carried out as follows: first, small parts are sewn on, then large ones. This will preserve the pattern and avoid distortions and deformation.
Most crafts using the patchwork technique consist of blocks. For example, in a blanket made of squares or triangles, the fragments are first sewn together in stripes, and then they are combined into a large product.
Patch to patch is basted along the inner edge of the marking with threads or fastened with pins. The pieces are then sewn together by machine. After this, the allowances are ironed. Only then are the blocks sewn into a single fabric.
Ironing the product
Ironing the sewn fragments is the most important stage of assembly., neglecting it means ruining the product:
- iron preferably on the front side;
- the seam is ironed under a fragment of dark color;
- all allowances of one block are smoothed in one direction, the next - in the opposite direction;
- to avoid distortions, the strips are ironed lengthwise;
- For problematic fabrics, use a steamer.
A hot iron will damage the padding polyester. It is ironed at low temperature using a steam generator or a damp cloth.
Quilting Basics
The final stage when sewing bulky items that require lining and insulation is stitching. It firmly connects the three layers of the product, does not allow it to warp during washing or cleaning, or the batting or padding polyester to get lost. Stitch patterns can be very complex and made with multi-colored threads.
The lining and insulation are cut out, if possible, from a single piece of fabric, adding about 5 cm from each edge to the size of the front fabric. First, the top and inside parts are quilted, then connected to the back. This is done in order to avoid deformation of the finished product.
You can quilt by machine or by hand in this sequence:
- smooth the fabric with your hands from the middle to the edges on a flat surface;
- the layers are fastened with pins;
- sew the corners of the canvases;
- always quilt from the middle to the periphery;
- The edge of the blanket is edged with fabric or ribbon.
The simplest master class
To make your first quilting item, you can take a master class with step by step instructions. The easiest way to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands is using the quick squares technique. The finished product will have a size of 220x200 cm, repeat - 20x20 cm, material - chintz.
- We do the calculations. We will need 110 squares, add 0.5 cm to the seams on each side. Each piece will have a size of 21X21 cm. Naturally, the canvas is not dimensionless. Chintz is produced in different widths, the most convenient to use is 150 cm. You will need 16 strips 21 cm long, 7 squares can be cut from each (2 will remain extra).
- For convenience and less fabric consumption, we will use 4 different prints - 4 stripes each 84 cm long. Taking into account shrinkage, we need to take more material.
- Wash, starch and iron the fabric.
- Using a template, mark the material and cut along the outer edge.
- We lay out the parts on a white sheet and come up with a sequence for connecting them into a pattern.
- We sweep the squares exactly according to the internal markings and sew them on a machine.
- Iron the seams.
- We assemble the front part of the blanket by sewing the blocks together.
- Remove the basting and iron it.
- We cut out insulation from batting, and from calico - the purl is tight. On each side we leave an allowance of 3-5 cm.
- We connect the batting and the patchwork fabric, sew the corners, baste, starting from the middle.
- If your machine does not have a quilting foot, use a zigzag stitch. The seams can be placed on top of or near the joints of the squares. We sew in the direction from the middle of the blanket to the edges.
- Separately fasten the lining.
- We process the edge of the blanket. You can use one of the fabrics used or a contrasting tape. Its width should be equal to double the seam allowance of the backing fabric and interfacing plus 1 cm per seam.
- We fix the corners of the product manually or with a machine.
The blanket is ready!
Quilts: photo gallery
First, determine which fabric will be the main one (it should be 4 times more than any other). Wash, dry and iron each piece of fabric well.
Now let's start cutting. Cut the fabric into strips 10 cm thick.
We sew and iron.
Cut into 16 cm blocks.
Let's start assembling the blanket. Preferably on a flat horizontal large surface. This could be the floor (but in the room that is least exposed to traffic and there is no access for children and animals). First, we lay out the blocks with a slope (6 pieces down to the left of the main color), and then up to the left, and also 6 pieces.
We continue in the same way row by row. It is advisable to lay out the main tone equally in each row.
Now you have already created your future blanket. It needs to be sewn.
To do this, from the upper right corner we begin to sew first the small blocks lying next to each other, and then diagonally.
This is how we stitch the entire blanket.
We iron it again.
Now we cut off unnecessary corners along the entire perimeter. Sew on the interlining and lining. Quilting a blanket. We sew the edges.
That's it - a patchwork blanket with a zig-zag pattern is ready!

There are different methods for accelerating block assembly. But if you are assembling blocks from different small pieces of fabric, then the non-woven assembly method will probably be the most effective. This way you can assemble a panel for a bag or a potholder, in a word, everything where you need to achieve precise alignment of angles. This method is suitable for assembling blocks from squares, i.e. where there will be seams in two directions - first horizontal, then vertical.
1.
We will need non-woven fabric (the thinnest one will do) with one adhesive side. We line the grid on the non-adhesive side according to the number of squares required. If in the finished product we have squares of 5 by 5 cm, then by adding another 1 cm to the seams on each side, we get a mesh on non-woven fabric with a side of each square of 7 cm. Thus, our non-woven fabric should be 35 by 35 cm. |
|
2. Usually 1 cm is enough for an allowance, but if the fabric is thick or very loose, then perhaps you can leave 1.5 cm. But I’m used to stitching along the edge of the foot, so I make the allowance based on this calculation. On this grid you can see a dotted line - this will be the line of the future connecting seam.
3. Place squares cut out of fabric (necessarily with an allowance!) on the adhesive side of the interlining and iron them. Please note that the squares are not joined exactly at the joint, this is not scary, it will even, perhaps, be easier to move on to the next operation, when you will need to bend the interlining along the marking lines.
4. Next, fold the first row onto the second along the mesh marking line (with right sides facing each other) and make a stitch along the interlining according to the allowance marking (or guided by the edge of the foot).
5.
And in this way we sew all the horizontal rows. Here I already ran ahead and ironed the first seam. I really wanted to see what happens... |
|
6.
We cut off the edge of the fold with a roller knife or scissors. Iron the seams. We make vertical seams in the same way: fold them right sides together, sew one row, the other..., cut the edge again and smooth it out. |
|
7. That's it, the canvas is assembled and the corners are connected perfectly.
8.
This is what this block looks like from the inside out. Advantages of this method: |

WHAT FABRICS ARE SUITABLE?
It is better if the fabrics are of the same quality. Cotton fabrics are ideal for beginners: products made from them are easy to wash, and most importantly, easy to cut and sew. Choose drawings according to your own imagination. But first, it’s better to choose fabrics with a pattern in the same tone and combine them with plain fabrics. It is very important to cut off all edges from fabrics before cutting them.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR MARKING AND CUTTING
Plastic templates
Pencils and markers
Ruler
Knife cutter
WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR MEASUREMENT AND CUTTING
Cutting mat
Round knife-cutter (with blade in the form of a rotating wheel)
Raster rulers
Pins
Scissors
WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR STITCHING AND EDGING
Thimble
Pins with heads
Safety pins
Paperclips or clips
Pencils
Sewing needles
SIMPLE GEOMETRIC PATTERNS can be cut out using a regular raster ruler. For more complex shapes, use plastic templates instead of paper templates. They are not only more durable, but also transparent, so through them you can easily see the pattern on the fabric. Sometimes you can also find templates with ready-made markings for geometric patterns on sale.
Fold the ironed fabric twice in the longitudinal direction so that you get four layers (the folds should run parallel to the edges). Place the fabric on the cutting mat so that the cuts are on the right. Place the raster ruler at a right angle to the fold and straighten the sections of the fabric. Lay out the fabric and check if the cuts are straight. As a last resort, repeat the operation.
Turn the rug together with the fabric 180°, now the cuts should be on the left. Measure the strip of fabric. To measure, use the vertical scale on right side rulers. Cut 3-4 strips. Turn the mat over again and trim the edges. To obtain rectangles or triangles, cut the resulting squares accordingly.
Place two pieces of paper face to face and stitch along one side. Experienced craftswomen sew the patches together with one seam, without cutting the threads or lifting the machine foot. Attention: with this method of stitching, several stitches appear between the squares that do not catch the fabric.
FOLDING PATTERNS
When sewing scraps, be sure to iron the seam allowances onto a darker fabric. To make a square block of scraps, simply stitch together two already sewn square scraps so that the scraps from different fabrics are staggered.
FOLDING PATTERNS
You can get stripes from shreds in the following way: sew squares from four square colored shreds and rectangles or squares from plain fabric in a checkerboard pattern. After this, stitch again in a checkerboard pattern (offset) individual rows of scraps.
In the next photo you will see that on the bedspread, each inner row consists of solid squares and blocks of four multi-colored patches.
FOLDING PATTERNS
When the central part of the piece is ready, start sewing the borders. The perimeter of the central part of the product determines the total length of the border. Typically, borders stitched to the sides of the central part are ground down using an “envelope corner”. The length of the border for each side is calculated as follows: the length (or width) of the central part of the product + double the width of the border (for the “envelope corner”) + seam allowances. When stitching the border to the side of the central part of the product, end the seam within 6 mm of the corner. At corners, sew the fabric at an exact 45° angle. Trim off any excess allowances and iron the remaining allowances onto the border.
Quilting
Quilted products made from shreds consist of three layers: top and bottom (made of shreds, or, alternatively, the top is made of shreds, the bottom is made of plain fabric) and the inner (volumetric, which gives the product a special relief when quilted). Before joining all three layers, iron the top and bottom sides thoroughly. Place the bottom side face down and secure it to the surface with masking tape. Place the inner part and the top side (face up) on the bottom, smooth it evenly and secure it with safety pins from the center to the periphery at intervals of 20 cm. If you are going to quilt the product by hand, then baste all three layers lengthwise and crosswise at seam intervals of 15 cm, removing pins one by one. Only after this, use a thin pencil to draw quilting lines on the top side of the product.
QUITTING WITH A SEWING MACHINE
Make sure that the top and bottom sides do not slide against each other. To do this, insert the special, raised foot of the machine. Always stitch from the center to the periphery, otherwise waves will appear on the product. So that the seam on the product is almost invisible, but a beautiful structure appears, sew exactly in the seam of the patches. At the end and beginning of the seam, make a tack: lift the bottom thread up and make several stitches of the smallest size. The optimal bartack length is 7 mm. After you have completed the tacking, trim the ends of the threads. Tip: when quilting, roll the free part of the product into a roll - this will make it more convenient for you to work.
HAND QUILTING
With this method of working, the product is stretched into a frame (like an embroidery hoop). Ideal option– a handmade frame that can be leaned against a table, leaving you hands free. When quilting by hand, sew also from the center to the periphery. Using a small needle and thread 50 cm long, at some distance from the starting point, make stitches through all three layers of the product. Sew several even small stitches at one time, then carefully pull the thread. Tip: it will be easier to work if you put a thimble on the middle finger of your working hand, and put a leather cap on the index finger of the other hand, which supports the product from below.
First, cut the fabric for the edging into strips across the grain. The width of the edging is approximately 7 cm. The total length of the stitched strips is equal to the perimeter of the product + 15 cm for diagonal corners + folds at the ends. Sew the strips at a 45° angle into one long strip. Iron the strip by folding it in half, with the wrong side facing in. Now lay the strip out in one layer. Along the top side of the product, trim the edges of the inside and bottom sides. Iron one end inward so that a triangle appears. Starting from this ironed end, pin the strip to the top side of the product along the entire length of one side at intervals of 10 cm. The edge sections lie on the sections of the product. Sew at a distance of 7 mm from the edge of the edging, grabbing all layers of the product.
EDGING: STEP BY STEP
Not reaching 7 mm from the corner of the product, interrupt the seam and tack. Turn the edging strip at a 45° angle outward, then turn the strip down so that the fold is exactly at the level of the already stitched edge of the edging. Now sew at a distance of 7 mm from the edge of the edging along the next side of the product, tacking all three layers. Treat other corners in the same way. When you have edged all sides of the product in this way, i.e. When you reach the beginning of the edging, cut off the excess edging allowance, turn in the end and finish the seam. Finally, fold the edging over the underside of the piece, secure with clips and hand sew with blind stitches.

Even a beginner can sew a patchwork blanket from squares. A patchwork blanket is a beautiful, colorful and artistically competent home textile. It is not sewn so quickly, and for beginners it may take much more time, but such sewing can be the first truly high-quality thing in the house that you have made with your own hands.
DIY patchwork bedspread
Review more than one master class to decide not only what your product will look like (you can also see this in the photo gallery), but whether you, as a beginner, can handle all this technology. Detailed master class, of course, simplifies the work, but do not take on a difficult task right away. The first sewing should be a pleasure, but wading through the jungle of unfamiliar technology can discourage you from further trying your hand at sewing. patchwork.
Any high-quality handicraft not only decorates the room, but also brings an atmosphere of comfort, warmth and natural brightness to the interior
Where does tailoring begin? Follow the instructions:
- Determine the size of the bedspread;
- Select one color scheme, which will be in the style of the interior of the room where the product is intended;
- Prepare the fabric: strips, pieces, shreds, squares;
- Prepare the fabric that will become the wrong side of the product;
- Tools you will need: scissors, needles/pins, thread, sewing machine, pencil and square ruler (but you can also use a square template).
Let's say you are making a product out of squares. Why from squares? This will definitely be easier for a beginner to do - for beginners, cutting different shapes with their own hands and then connecting them in a pattern is a real challenge.
You can choose any pattern for the bedspread that you can

Of course, if there is a photo or video of a master class, view it in detail. But even if you only have diagrams in front of you, you can start sewing with them.
An important point: before you start preparing squares, the fabric should be prepared for work. Just soak it for ten minutes in hot water, and then just rinse it in clean warm water.
If we are to be completely consistent, it would be nice to show real class and starch the fabric. It’s worth doing this - it will be easier to work with the material. And, of course, iron the fabric thoroughly.

How to sew a patchwork bedspread
A small master class on how to make quick squares from fabric.
Just four steps:
- Take two different pieces of fabric and cut two equal strips from them;
- Fold them with the wrong side and sew, secure the sewing by carefully smoothing the seam;
- Now measure the width of the resulting product, and from the third piece of fabric, cut out the same strip (of the same width);
- You need to fold it with the resulting part right side out, and make seams on both sides.
As a result, you should end up with a kind of double-sided sleeve. Place this canvas on the table and cut out squares from it using a template or a special ruler.
In order to cut the squares correctly, it is important to use a template or ruler
It’s difficult to come up with a simpler scheme than this; any beginner will repeat this master class. This will be followed by the stage of connecting the squares. From the details you can get whatever patterns you want - simple geometric, fantasy, snakes, and mosaics. For the first time, you can lay out a simple ornament to make it easier to handle and you won’t get confused about what you are going to sew.
When you have decided on the pattern, the squares can be sewn together. First comes the sewing of the longitudinal stripes, after which you must iron the seams. Then we sew the resulting strips into one fabric. And again the next stage is careful ironing. After this, you will see that the front side is finished.

Sew a patchwork bedspread: the final part
The front side is not the whole product. Next, you must sew the front part to the back with your own hands. Chintz is an excellent backing fabric. Batiste can also be made inside out.

- Place the piece of fabric for the backing face down on the table;
- Place padding polyester on top of the backing fabric if your bedspread has the function of a blanket (otherwise padding polyester is not needed);
- The next layer is the front side, that same patchwork of squares;
- Either baste it yourself, or you just need to pin the entire product together and quilt it on a sewing machine.
In order for the bedspread to have a shape, it is necessary to use a sealing material in the form of padding polyester.
How to quilt an item correctly? The easiest way to do this is along the borders of the squares, but if you envision some kind of pattern, you can quilt along the pattern. True, for beginners this is a rather difficult task (a separate master class on stitching will help you in this case).
The last stage is edging. This is easy to do: take a strip of fabric approximately 8 cm wide, and the length should be slightly longer than one side of the product. The fabric needs to be folded in half, applied to the front side of the item and sewn. Fold the excess edges of the edging to the wrong side of the item, fold the edging onto the wrong side of the product and stitch from the front side. The line will go across the canvas. The other sides of the item are edged in the same way.
Having comprehended the basic basics of this skill, you can move on to more complex ornaments.
This is the simplest master class; such a product doesn’t really need diagrams. The main thing is not to overdo it with the patchwork pattern.
This blanket can be used to decorate a bed, sofa, and sometimes it is also used as a tablecloth. Well, what if you decide to make a patchwork product for a children's bed? Maybe this is where you should take your first step in patchwork?
