How to get rid of age spots on the face at home. How to remove pigment spots on the face? How to remove pigmentation in other ways
Cosmetologists call pigmented areas of the skin that have darkened due to excess melanin production. It has been scientifically proven that pigment spots can be located in the epidermis, dermis and at their border. The result of the correction depends on the depth of pigmentation: the deeper and the larger the accumulation of melanin, the more difficult it is to get rid of it.
Age spots can be congenital, acquired or age-related. Patients turn to cosmetologists or dermatologists with such types of hyperpigmentation as freckles, lentigo, melasma, and clinical manifestations of photodamage.

« Freckles(ephelids) are small spots, mostly round in shape, uniform in color, 1–2 mm in diameter, says Karine Vardanyan, SkinCeuticals brand expert, dermatovenerologist and head of the allergology department at the European Medical Center clinic. “Most often, freckles occur in blond, brown-haired and red-haired people on open areas of the skin under the active influence of solar radiation.”
The more intense the ultraviolet light, the darker the freckles. Without exposure to the sun, they turn pale, and in winter they may disappear altogether.
Solar lentigo- These are oval-shaped pigment spots measuring 2–20 mm. They are most often located on the face and hands, but can also appear on the torso. The color of the spots is mostly uniform, the pigmentation is persistent and does not disappear on its own.
How to deal with age spots
It doesn’t matter whether you have just discovered age spots or have been struggling with them for a long time, the first and main rule is to use a cream with a sunscreen and moderate sun exposure.

Cosmetologists urge you to protect your skin from the sun, especially your facial skin. Ultraviolet rays reduce the skin's immunity, dry it, provoke photoaging and the appearance of age spots.
Whitening creams have a certain effect if used regularly for a long time, but they are not able to completely get rid of pigmentation. Spots can be effectively corrected only with the help of cosmetic procedures - hardware or injection.
Lightening agents will help:
reduce the contrast between the pigment spot and the surrounding skin;
reduce spot size;
maintain the lightening result;
prevent the appearance of new stains.
Whitening creams and serums, as a rule, contain a powerful dose of acids, which means that it is better to use them in the autumn-winter period, when the sun is least active in our latitudes.
Cosmetologists recommend using brightening serums with acids and retinol before bed, and be sure to apply cream with SPF in the morning to avoid the appearance of new spots.
Cosmetology against pigmentation
Today, there are many methods for correcting pigmentation and hyperpigmentation. An integrated approach to treatment involves:
whitening procedures;
reduction of UV-induced melanin synthesis;
decreased transport of new melanin into cells.
Whitening procedures include chemical peels, mesotherapy, phototherapy (IPL systems), phonophoresis and, of course, the use of professional and home lightening products.
Chemical peeling
One of the mildest procedures for getting rid of age spots. During a superficial peel (for example, glycolic peel), the thinnest top layer of skin is gradually removed under the influence of weak acid solutions. You will have to be patient: to get rid of a small pigment spot, you will need a course of procedures.
For pigmentation that has appeared some time ago, the use of medium peels based on trichloroacetic acid or retinol is effective. After they are performed, rehabilitation is required for several days.

Whitening mesotherapy
Biorevitalization cannot defeat age spots - this is a fact. But peptide injections enriched with vitamin C help not only lighten the skin, but also improve its immunity.
One of the most progressive methods of combating skin problems, including pigmentation, is plasma therapy: the patient is injected with his own plasma, enriched with platelets and growth factors.
Phototherapy (IPL systems)
For those who panic at the sight of a needle, we recommend taking a closer look at hardware methods for combating pigmentation. Phototherapy is a treatment using broadband pulsed light. Unlike a laser, it does not “burn out” the top layer of skin, but heats it, activating the processes of producing new collagen and elastin.
A certain temperature regime allows you to fight stains - it’s not painful or hot. To get visible results, 5–7 sessions are enough.
Laser therapy
New generation lasers work wonders. The American machines Fraxel and Picosure are considered the most advanced today. The rays warm the skin deeply enough to start renewal processes.
Among the side effects, doctors mention redness and swelling for a couple of days. But with proper home care, you can get rid of unpleasant sensations the very next day after the hardware treatment.
Composition of lightening cosmetics
To combat pigmentation, various serums and creams are used, which we will discuss in the next paragraph. Let's look at what components they work on.

Key whitening ingredients block melanin synthesis by affecting the enzyme tyrosinase involved in this process.
- 1
Hydroquinone- a substance that damages or kills melanocytes that synthesize the pigment melanin. Toxic and therefore prohibited for use in Europe.
- 2
Kojic acid- one of the AHA acids with whitening and exfoliating effects.
- 3
Arbutin- a plant component found in bearberry and blackberry. When combined with kojic acid, its whitening effect is enhanced.
- 4
Glabridin- licorice root extract has not only a whitening, but also an anti-inflammatory effect.
- 5
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)- antioxidant. It is easily destroyed, which is why the magnesium salt of L-ascorbic acid is often used in cosmetics. Reduces melanin production and enhances collagen synthesis.
- 6
Azelaic acid- in high concentrations has a brightening effect. Capable of suppressing the growth and activity of abnormal melanocytes.

The best way to prevent it is to use creams with SPF, as well as moderate sun exposure. If you are going on vacation to hot countries, stock up on sunscreen for your face and body.
If this is the middle band, the SPF factor can vary from 30 to 50 units.
In a tropical climate, you can't do without SPF 50+.
The “fifty” rule also applies to climbers and skiers and snowboarders. The sun reflected from the snow can cause skin burns and age spots.

How to clean at home
Pigment spots on the face can be whitened at home using purchased creams and ointments or homemade folk remedies.
Creams and ointments
Common bleaching agents:
- hydrogen peroxide - a solution with a concentration of 3% is applied locally to the spot without injuring healthy skin, used with lemon juice in equal proportions. Used in teeth whitening;
- pharmaceutical cream with mercury - used for a short time, contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation;

A proven remedy for removing age spots on the face is Skinoren cream. Its component is azelaic acid. For a quick effect, Skinoren is used 2 times a day.
By adhering to certain rules for using creams for age spots purchased at a pharmacy, you can achieve maximum results:
- Before applying the cream, cleanse the skin.
- Apply the cream to the pigmentation area and use it until the problem disappears, following the instructions.
- The duration of treatment and frequency of application is determined depending on the chemical components included in the cosmetic product.
The use of creams and ointments can significantly lighten pigment spots (by 2-3 tones), remove them without traces, improve complexion, and prevent the appearance of new pigmentation.
Age spots are lightened using home procedures; to remove them, you should turn to cosmetic procedures: ultrasound or chemical peeling, laser removal, mesotherapy (complex injection technique), cryoapplication (removal of spots with liquid nitrogen).
Folk remedies
You can fight age spots at home using:
- Herbal infusions from available ingredients.
- Whitening products.
- Lotions (in the early stages of pigmentation or during exacerbation).

Recipes for homemade peelings and scrubs
Peeling or scrub is the main condition for quality skin care, it allows you to remove age spots on the face and restore the skin to a healthy appearance. Cosmetology offers a choice of various peelings and hardware care techniques. If you don’t have time to visit professional cosmetologists, an alternative is peeling at home.
The essence is to remove the top layer of the epidermis and stimulate cell regeneration, which leads to lightening of the skin, increasing the level of elasticity and uniformity.
The frequency of using peeling at home is twice a week. More frequent use causes damage to the natural layer that protects the skin.
When choosing components for peeling, you should take into account the age and type of skin.
A common natural component with the effect of exfoliating dead skin cells is coffee grounds. Used in combination with olive oil or fermented milk products as a scrub. For normal and dry skin, coffee grounds are combined with cream, sour cream, for oily skin - with yogurt, kefir or milk with a low fat content. The mixture is applied to the face and neck with massaging movements, left to dry, and washed first with warm water, then with cold water.
A good scrub is made from dried crushed peels of orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime in combination with yogurt, kefir and soda along with baby liquid soap.
Crushed rice, flakes, and almonds are suitable for peeling masks. One teaspoon of rice is mixed with two teaspoons of cottage cheese, twenty drops of olive oil are added, heated, left on the face for fifteen minutes and washed off. Two tablespoons of crushed flakes and almonds are combined with a mixture of a teaspoon of cream, green tea, and a drop of rose oil, mixed thoroughly and left to brew for twenty minutes. After massaging, apply to damp skin of the face and neck, leave for 15 minutes and rinse. Then the cream is applied. For oily skin, replace heavy cream with low-fat milk, rose oil with lemon juice.
Salicylic peeling is used to combat acne and regulate the functioning of the sebaceous glands. Wipe problem areas on the skin with a solution of 15% salicylic acid, rinse off after 3-5 minutes and apply a nourishing cream.
Bodyaga will help cope with pigmentation on the face. The medicinal plant is dried and crushed into powder or use ready-made powder from a pharmacy, diluted with hot water and the resulting mixture is applied to the face and left for 10 minutes; for the best effect, use a scrub with bodyaga and hydrogen peroxide.
Contraindications to the use of home methods
Using traditional methods, in order to remove age spots on the face, you need to study its components before using the selected recipe. Knowing the characteristics of the components included in the recipe will help prevent the occurrence of dangerous allergic reactions. At the slightest sign of allergy, itching, burning, you should stop using the folk remedy. Treatment of age spots in children at home is not recommended.
When using home methods for pigmentation on the face, you should take into account the characteristics of the skin, the reaction to the components, do it regularly, monitor the body and you will receive a reward - clean, ideal skin.
Pigment spots are limited areas of the epidermis containing an increased amount of a special pigment - melanin. Due to this, the skin in such places acquires a dark brown color.
The location of hyperpigmentation on the face causes a lot of problems and worries for its owner, such as an unaesthetic appearance, inconvenience when putting on clothes or applying makeup.
Causes of age spots
Age spots can appear at any age, but their incidence is still higher in people of the older age category (after 40 years).
The development of hyperpigmented areas on the face can be caused by both external and internal factors.
Among the first, the main ones are:
- ultraviolet irradiation (sunlight, solarium);
- frequent injury to the upper layers of the skin (irrational use of facial cleansing products, severe acne, furunculosis, chemical or thermal damage);
- use of cosmetics that are irritating or unsuitable for a given skin type;
- taking certain medications (oral contraceptives, tetracycline antibiotics, sulfonamides, antipsychotics).
In addition, a number of internal reasons can cause age spots:
- hormonal imbalance due to gynecological and endocrine diseases, pregnancy, childbirth, lactation;
- metabolic disorders in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the liver, gall bladder, and intestines;
- accumulation of breakdown products with decreased kidney function;
- insufficient content of vitamins and minerals (folic acid, vitamin C, PP);
- genetic predisposition;
- nervous system disorders, chronic stress;
- aging processes.
Increased pigmentation of the skin can be detected in completely healthy people, and at the same time it can be a symptom of a disease.
Is it possible to get rid of age spots?
The most common question that worries most patients is how to get rid of pigmentation on the face and whether this is possible in principle. Today, modern science has a wide selection of technologies and techniques devoted to this problem. In some cases, it is sufficient to establish the cause and treat the underlying disease in order for hyperpigmentation to disappear. In others, it is necessary to resort to additional influences to obtain a successful result.
How to remove age pigmentation
Age spots that appear on the face with age are usually caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays and are called lentigines. They are distinguished by a gradual onset and slow progression, however, this particular type of pigmentation is more persistent and does not change color depending on the time of year.
Before getting rid of pigmentation on the face at an older age, the patient should be examined for other possible causes. It is mandatory to visit a dermatologist, who, using a special device - a dermatoscope, will eliminate the possibility of the pigment spot degenerating into melanoma or skin cancer. In rare cases, a skin graft biopsy is used.
People in the older age category should avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible and use sunscreen during the warm season.
If pigment spots are already present on the skin of the face, treatment begins with the use of gentle procedures: applying a lightening cream, gel, using exfoliating scrubs and lotions. The effect of such measures occurs in approximately 2-3 months.
If all of the above measures are ineffective, laser skin resurfacing can help the problem. This procedure completely removes the pigmented area of the epidermis in one go and requires careful care in the future.
Pigmentation on the face after childbirth
Pregnancy and childbirth are physiological processes that force a woman’s body to completely restructure itself. First of all, this concerns her hormonal levels. As a result of the increased work of the adrenal glands, which also produce melanocyte-stimulating hormone, areas of hyperpigmentation appear on the body of the expectant mother, which can persist and even intensify after childbirth.
To reduce the severity of changes and prevent the appearance of new ones, a nutritious diet high in folic acid (greens, citrus fruits, beans, liver) should be followed. You should not neglect walks in the fresh air and physical exercises, which help normalize metabolism and eliminate congestion in the circulatory system.
Among facial whitening products, it is preferable to use cosmetics with natural ingredients or even prepare them yourself. It is strictly forbidden to use hydroquine-containing creams.
Pigment spots in young mothers can disappear on their own on average 6-12 months after birth.
How to remove age spots on the face with cosmetic and salon procedures
The most effective way to get rid of dark spots on the face is to identify and treat the cause of their appearance. To do this, depending on concomitant diseases, it is necessary to undergo examination by a dermatologist, therapist, gynecologist, endocrinologist or gastroenterologist.
At the same time, you can use various whitening procedures at home or in a salon, after mandatory consultation with a cosmetologist.
Fastest
The majority of women are most interested in how to remove age spots on the face as quickly as possible. This can only be done through invasive procedures performed by a doctor in specialized offices or salons.
These include laser facial resurfacing, phototherapy, and ELOS technology. These measures are contraindicated in pregnant women, if the spots are suspected of being malignant, or if they are hypersensitive to light.
Laser therapy
Laser treatment involves “burning out” the top layer of pigmented epidermis. The manipulation is carried out in one stage and may be accompanied by painful sensations. After laser therapy, skin care, hygiene and asepsis are required. The recovery period takes one week. A prerequisite for treatment is to protect the skin from sunlight.
Phototherapy
Phototherapy (or IPL therapy) is one of the latest methods of hardware cosmetology, which is based on the impact of high-intensity light streams that destroy pigment cells. Compared to previous technology, this procedure does not affect the upper layers of the skin, and is therefore safer and less traumatic. For 3 days after phototherapy, visiting the pool and thermal procedures are not recommended.
ELOS
It also refers to methods of hardware removal of pigment spots using light and bipolar current. The main difference is the effect on the deep layers of the dermis, heating of melanocytes and their destruction. No adverse effects were noted after the manipulation. In severe cases, multiple sessions may be required. The procedure is painless, hyperpigmentation disappears forever.
Chemical peeling
Chemical peeling is carried out by applying a special chemical composition to the affected areas. The components of this composition may include glycolic acid (alpha hydroxy acid), phenol, trichloroacetic and fruit acids. The procedure can be superficial or deep. In addition, the method has some disadvantages: it is carried out only in the autumn-winter period, several stages are required, severe irritation and redness of the face are possible. However, chemical peeling is a fairly effective technique.
Beauty treatments
Cosmetic manipulations include various masks, care cosmetics, pharmacological preparations (hydrogen peroxide, salicylic acid, bodyaga, zinc ointment, mercury cream). The drugs Retin-A, Achromin MAX, and VC-IP solution have a therapeutic effect.
Salon treatments
In salons, a cosmetologist, in addition to the methods described above, can offer the following manipulations:
- oxygen-stimulating procedures;
- ultrasonic and mechanical (dermabrasion) peeling;
- mesotherapy (injection of subcutaneous bleaching drugs);
- cryotherapy (applying liquid nitrogen to the pigmented area).
Brown spots on the face and creams to get rid of them
One of the most affordable and easiest ways to remove brown spots on the face is used at home. As a rule, creams containing various components that act on one of the links in the mechanism of formation of the melanin pigment are used for this.
They are hydroquinone at a concentration of 1-2%, tretinoin, glabridin, kojic acid, arbutin. The production of an enzyme that induces the process of pigment synthesis from its previous form is blocked by fruit acids. They are also added to the cream.
If an allergic reaction to this product occurs (itching, urticaria, swelling), you must immediately stop using the cream and use another method.
Folk remedies
The possibilities of traditional medicine in getting rid of age spots are represented by the use of various plants that have whitening properties. These can be cucumbers, parsley, licorice, viburnum fruits, lemon, black and red currants, cranberries, coffee, bearberry. They have an effect similar to a light chemical peel.
For example, the following recipes for various remedies are effective and safe:
- viburnum with honey in equal parts, evenly applied to pigmented spots for 30 minutes, rinsed off with plenty of warm water;
- chopped parsley with kefir in the same ratio, applied for 20 minutes;
- lemon juice, diluted in half with water, wipe the face with a cotton pad twice a day;
- finely grated cucumber, keep on face for 20-30 minutes;
- coffee, cranberry and oatmeal (1 tablespoon of each ingredient), leave on the affected areas for 10 minutes, then rub in with a rotating motion;
- bearberry infusion, 1 tablespoon of crushed leaves, pour 1 glass of hot water, after cooling, take 1/3 glass orally up to 3-4 times a day.
Brown spots on the face can also be wiped with pre-prepared ice cubes from viburnum, cranberry, currant or lemon juice.
After an illness in May, I developed two small pigment spots on my cheeks. They formed while taking antibiotics, as the therapist later explained to me. I didn’t pay much attention to this, and on the advice of my friends, I began to smear the spots with parsley. From that moment on, my life was divided into two - one before the "spots", and the second - a life with "big huge ugly spots all over my face."
For ten years I have tried all the methods of getting rid of age spots - folk remedies, nuclear mixtures of drugs, lotions, mesotherapy, laser and phototherapy. A huge amount of money has actually been invested in the face, but the pigmentation comes back like a boomerang. After passing all the tests and visiting doctors, the verdict was made that the pigment spots on my skin were a purely cosmetic defect, no diseases or other causes were identified.
I learned to quickly deal with pigment; in almost a month, brown spots can be made much lighter, and in two months they can disappear. If you do not protect yourself from sunlight, the pigmentation will return.
I will tell you about my method of combating hyperpigmentation, it is quite simple, but at the same time very strong. It is unlikely to be suitable for people with sensitive skin, pregnant women, and children. I have Asian-type skin, quite thick, combination, naturally dark-skinned, and I tan quickly. It is this type of skin that is often subject to disorders of melanin in the skin.
As with any treatment, there are rules that you can follow to achieve results. Conversely, neglecting them can worsen the condition or lead to relapse. The basic rules are known, they are worth repeating. I added my own to the main ones, based on my experience and results. And so, what must be strictly observed:
- As soon as you notice dark spots on your face, urgently buy sunscreen with SPF50 or higher. Every time before going outside you need to apply cream to your face - this is rule number 1. It can be any type - cream, gel, spray. Now you need to protect yourself from the sun not only in summer, but also in autumn and winter.
- Visit your doctor to determine the possible causes of age spots.
- We begin treatment in October, not earlier. Solar activity manifests itself even in September. You should not carry out even gentle procedures or any whitening masks during the summer months. You will only make the situation worse. The upper stratum corneum peels off, the skin becomes thinner and begins to protect itself with increased melanin production, that is, the appearance of new darker spots.
- We exclude coffee, alcohol and medications during treatment. This must be done to speed up the effect. It is necessary to start metabolic processes in the skin, removing toxins from the body.
- A month before starting use, go for a facial massage course and start taking vitamins “”. You can learn how to do massage yourself; there are plenty of videos on the Internet. Massaging increases blood supply and nutrition to the skin and muscles of the face. Ascorutin consists of 50% vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin P (rutoside). They are antioxidants, so they will perfectly prepare the skin for subsequent procedures.
- Buy a whitening cream with arbutin or hydroquinone in advance. Creams containing hydroquinone cannot be purchased at the pharmacy. Therefore, you need to take care of the purchase earlier, so as not to waste precious time later. What creams I use will be described below.
- The first week of treatment is usually difficult in that the skin may become severely red and flaky. If possible, take a week off. I usually take an extra day off on Friday and start treatments on Thursday evening. Four days is usually enough to get used to it.
What you need to whiten your skin at home
To carry out whitening procedures at home, you will need the following components:
Stages of skin whitening at home
We divide whitening procedures into two stages: preparatory and main.
Preparatory stage— behavior of testing whitening cream and other ingredients for allergies. A week before the start of the main stage, we check the skin’s reaction to allergens on the elbow. Apply alternately every day - whitening cream, demixide solution, salicylic alcohol. If there is no negative result in the form of severe redness or unbearable itching, then you can proceed to the main stage. If allergies occur, it is necessary to remove the irritating component from the bleaching process. If a reaction occurs to a cream for age spots, then it needs to be replaced with another one. In the case where demixide or salicylic alcohol are the allergen, they will simply have to be excluded.
Main stage. On Thursday evening, remove makeup from your face, wash your face as usual, and pat your face dry. After this, apply a very thin layer of whitening cream with hydroquinone or arbutin. Treat only those areas of the skin where you have pigmentation. Rub the cream in for 2-3 minutes, avoiding the area around the eyes. Remember that Expigment and Astramin cream formulations are toxic, so be careful. Under no circumstances should they come into contact with mucous membranes or eyes. The skin where the cream is applied may become red, don’t worry, this is normal. On the first day, the process of adaptation of the skin begins and the redness may last for a day. In the morning we wash our face and use moisturizer.
On Friday evening, we wash off the makeup, lightly exfoliate the skin with baking soda, and then wipe the pigmented areas with salicylic alcohol. applied to a cotton pad. Next, rub the dimexide solution into the skin; to do this, soak a small piece of cotton pad in the solution and generously lubricate the affected areas several times. Tingling of the skin means that demixide has begun its work of penetrating into the deep layers of the epidermis. Apply a thin layer of whitening cream on top, tapping it in with your fingertips until completely absorbed. In the morning after washing, apply moisturizer again.
I carry out the second stage every day for two weeks. After that, I eliminate daily peeling, and use the whitening cream twice a day - morning and evening. In the morning after washing my face, I rub bleach into problem areas and after half an hour moisturizer, and before going to work I rub protection. And so on for another two weeks. See the results of this treatment below.
Results of skin whitening on the face at home and reviews
When I said that pigmentation can be dealt with quickly, it really is so. Of course, this is not three days, but after two weeks you can get a more even skin tone, like I have in the photo below. In this form, the spots are practically invisible under a layer of cosmetics. And after another 2-3 weeks, the spots will almost disappear.
Results of using Expigment cream for two weeks
For me, spots disappear faster on my cheeks and nose, but my forehead takes longer to heal. Cream Expigment and Astramin have a prolonged effect. This means that hydroquinone and arbutin accumulate in the skin and continue their action of breaking down melanin for another month and a half after stopping the cream.
The most important thing is not to provoke your skin by prolonged exposure to the sun and always use sunscreen. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them. I hope that my experience will help you in solving problems with age spots.
Beauty salons offer several types of whitening procedures, during which the top layer of skin is removed. A dermatologist or cosmetologist who directly cleanses the face determines which method to use, based on how pronounced the pigmentation is, where it is localized, and also evaluates contraindications in each specific case.
Laser. The undeniable advantages of this method are its safety and effectiveness. And all thanks to the fact that it quite effectively fights skin pigmentation, without causing harm to the skin. During the procedure, the rays penetrate the skin and evaporate the moisture contained in it. Old cells die, and healthy ones appear in their place, without any damage.
Ultrasound. The procedure is indicated for those women whose pigment spots are not clearly visible, since in more serious cases the method is ineffective. The procedure uses a device that emits ultrasonic waves. They have a positive effect on the skin: they improve blood circulation, get rid of pigmentation and at the same time do not injure it.
Chemical. Of the listed types of cosmetic procedures, this is the most dangerous, painful method, which has a number of contraindications. During the procedure, a solution consisting of various acids is applied to the problem area of the skin, which corrode the top layer of the skin along with the pigment spot.
Before you decide to remove age spots on your face with peeling, you should consult your doctor. Since, despite the popularity and effectiveness of the procedure, it has a number of contraindications, for example, such as paralysis of the facial nerve, chronic, infectious diseases, the presence of ulcers and others.
Folk remedies for removing age spots on the face
