How flip flops came into fashion

Flip-flops, slates, Japanese shoes, flip-flops, flip-flops - all these names refer to one type of shoe: with a flat sole, straps and a bridge between the toes. Simple, like everything ingenious. Rhinestones, sequins, bows, etc. are just decor that cannot in any way affect the sensations when walking.

Thousands of years before us, slippers were worn everywhere where it was hot - in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, Japan, India... These were simple shoes for the poor: cheap and cheerful.

Flip-flops came to Europe in the early 50s of the 20th century. American soldiers brought them with them as souvenirs from Japan and Korea. “Zori” (as they are called in Japan) were the main shoes of peasants until the mid-60s.

In the USSR, flip-flops were called “flip-flops,” and the main supplier of these shoes was communist Vietnam. The exchange was truly profitable. We give them military equipment and food, they give us rice and rubber flip-flops.

In the West and the Soviet Union, flip-flops remained exclusively beach shoes for a long time. It was considered extremely indecent to appear in them outside the beach. Only hippies or domestic “informals” could afford something like this.
