How long does a tattoo peel off? Fresh tattoo peels off skin with paint
It is not always possible to understand on your own why a tattoo itches after the skin has completely healed, since there may be several provoking factors.
Duration of normal healing
After getting a tattoo, the normal process of skin flaking and itching begins. These are signs that the wounds are beginning to heal with the appearance of scabs. You should not touch these places with your hands, much less try to remove the crusts, so as not to cause further distortion of the color tone of the picture.
The master will definitely give recommendations on how to care for the tattoo, what to wash and lubricate, in order to avoid inflammation. Immediately after filling, a bandage with medicinal cream is applied for 4–12 hours, depending on the complexity and size of the pattern.
After removing the bandages, wash the tattoo carefully with antibacterial soap without washcloths, only with clean hands. It dries naturally, after which it is covered with a thin layer of a special anti-inflammatory, healing ointment.
Lubrication is repeated several times during the day as it dries. Before going to bed, everything is washed again, lubricated and a protective bandage is applied, which will also be needed during the day if you need to go outside. This treatment is carried out for three to four days.
Then, after a shower, the tattoo area is wiped with special lotions. With this type of care, some flaking and accompanying itching are normal. The redness that appears immediately after the end of the injection of the pattern goes away in about 6-12 hours, swelling persists for up to two days.
Duration complete cleansing skin from protruding scabs is individual for each person, but on average it is at least a month. An old tattoo causes concern when redness and burning appears some time after healing. This may be a sign of infection.
Possibility of infection
If, despite following all the prescribed care procedures, a fresh, long-lasting tattoo itches and flakes, then this becomes a reason to contact a dermatologist.
You can understand for yourself that an inflammatory process has begun on a tattoo by tactile sensations hot skin when touched with your palm.
Gradually, the contours of the tattooed pattern are surrounded by reddened areas, further indicating that the tattoo is itching due to the development of an infection. After carrying out the prescribed treatment measures, everything gradually returns to normal.
Allergic reaction
One of the reasons why an itchy rash appears on the places where a tattoo was made is an allergy, which occurs more often to coloring pigments, less often to processing materials. At the same time, such a negative reaction may not appear immediately, but after some time.
In addition to rashes, allergy symptoms include areas of redness on the tattoo, unpleasant pain, and fever. There may be swelling of the throat, making breathing difficult.
Only a doctor can tell you what to do in such a situation, although at first obvious signs allergies, an antihistamine is immediately taken. The exact cause is identified after examination, after which a set of therapeutic measures is prescribed. In complicated situations, tattoo removal is sometimes required.
Development of eczema
The reason why a healed tattoo itches one and a half to two months after its application may be eczema, which manifests itself as a rich rash. The reason for its development is paraphenylenediamine, which is part of the ink. It takes a very long time to treat such a skin lesion.
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation
If a fairly old tattoo itches, about a year after it was done, the cause may be a reaction to ultraviolet radiation. This is due to the structural formula of the ink. If they contain cadmium, then when exposed to natural sunlight or an artificial stream of rays in a solarium, the puncture sites begin to rise and the surface becomes convex.
Rejection mainly affects red and yellow paints containing cadmium. Sometimes green ink containing chromium oxide or orange ink containing cadmium selenium sulfide act as a provoking factor.
What not to do?
Often the reason why a tattoo begins to itch a lot is a violation of a number of restrictions after it was applied. You cannot visit the bathhouse, bask in the sauna, take a bath, or swim in a pool or open water. This will prevent the formed crust from falling off prematurely and damaging the design when it forms. new skin after tattooing on puncture sites.
Sports activities are contraindicated for two weeks so as not to strain the muscles located in the tattoo area. Try to avoid crowded places, go on picnics, or go to the dacha to prevent dust from contaminating your skin.
Contraindications
Before you decide to get a tattoo, you need to check with the artist what contraindications there are.
The procedure cannot be performed on people with diabetes mellitus, in the presence of poor blood clotting. Tattooing is prohibited for pregnant and lactating women. Serves as a limitation to the period of menstruation when, due to unstable hormonal levels complications during wound healing are possible. Alcohol intake is excluded.
At the end of the article, we offer a list of special medications that comprehensively solve all problems with a fresh tattoo (not just itching):
Dr. Numb is a water-based ointment. It is the only anesthetic that allows you to work with 3D mesothreads without pain.
Tattoo ointments SHOULD NOT contain alcohol or aloe. These two ingredients negatively affect the quality of the tattoo.
Cream TKTX basic active substances ointments - prilocaine and lidocaine at a concentration of 5% and epinephrine - 0.01%.
If you can find these products, most likely, only in tattoo parlors, then the simplest ones, such as, for example:
Clothing touching tattoo areas should be clean and loose-fitting. Preference should be given to cotton fabrics (not wool, not silk or synthetics).
Under no circumstances should you wet the tattoo or peel off the crust. It is possible that the tattoo will itch, but under no circumstances should you scratch it: apply a healing agent generously, it will neutralize the itching for a while.
Sign of the end of the 3rd stage: complete, independent peeling off the crust from the entire surface of the tattoo. Now the tattoo looks quite healed, but the skin on it is very thin. Perhaps the skin will renew itself again (peel off like after a sunburn).
IMPORTANT: During the first 3 stages, it is strictly PROHIBITED to take water procedures, baths, saunas, sunbathing and actively engage in contact sports. Contact of the tattoo with dirty surfaces, animal hair, silk and synthetics is PROHIBITED. YOU MUST AVOID the use of any drugs and alcohol!
Stage 4: recovery
Duration of the stage: 1-2 weeks. Goal: complete recovery skin and reducing the likelihood of re-renewal (exfoliation of the top layer of skin).
Before all water procedures, the tattoo must be lubricated with a healing agent. If you don’t have it on hand, you can use baby cream or Vaseline. Until the skin has fully recovered, you should:
- minimize duration water procedures, do not expose the wound to excessive wetting or steaming;
- do not expose the tattoo to ultraviolet radiation (sun and solarium);
To protect from the sun, cover your tattoo with clothing or use protective creams with a maximum SPF value. Buy from us in the studio or at the pharmacy.
A sign of the end of the stage is the same skin structure on the tattooed and clean area. From this point on, your tattoo is completely healed.
BUT taking care of your tattoo doesn’t end there! The tattoo should be protected from aggressive external influences and from excessive ultraviolet radiation. In the sun and solarium, use products with a high degree of protection (50+ SPF).

Tattoo care
So, you have become the owner of a new, beautiful tattoo. I'm sure you'll want to make every effort to keep it that way. Remember that in case of improper care of the tattoo, the artist does not bear any responsibility for it. appearance. It is very important to follow a few simple rules, because otherwise the consequences can be very dire.
Tattoo Covering
After completing the work, the artist covered your fresh tattoo with film to avoid contact with the external environment, clothing, etc. Yes, your tattoo is still a wound, don’t be alarmed, and fresh and open wounds, as you know, are an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and infections. The film should not be removed for at least three to four hours. I perfectly understand your desire to look at the tattoo as soon as possible and show it off to your friends, but you will have to be patient and your friends will have to wait.
Washing and caring for tattoos
After removing the film, the first thing you should do is wash your tattoo. When washing, you will need warm water and liquid antibacterial soap to wash away any ointment, blood (if any), or lymph and to completely clean the tattoo area. Do not use washcloths or towels under any circumstances; in this case, your main tool should be your hands. If your tattoo feels sticky and slippery to the touch, then you still have lymph and cream left: try to completely remove them from the design!
Next, blot (but do not rub) the tattoo area with a clean paper towel and allow the tattoo to dry completely before gently applying cream. When choosing an ointment or cream, I advise you to pay attention to “Baneocin”, it is best suited for this procedure. After applying the ointment, you need to cover the tattoo with film again.
You will need to carry out this procedure 3-4 times a day for the next two days after getting the tattoo. Continue to ensure that your tattoo remains clean and dry at all times. Don't forget to lubricate it with cream or ointment.
On the third day, you need to wash the tattoo, let it dry and lubricate it with cream again, but there is no longer any need to seal it. Until the crust flies off, I advise you to continue to smear the tattoo with a thin layer of cream 3-4 times a day.
Showers, baths, saunas and pools
Of course, you can (and should!) wash your tattoo in the shower, but you just need to know when to stop and not drown it in water. Taking hot baths or visiting saunas can cause serious harm to your tattoo, so you should avoid them for two to three weeks. You can safely take a shower, but again, I repeat, know when to stop! If shower gel or shampoo gets on your tattoo, simply wash it off with water. Swimming, no matter where - in a pool, in fresh or salt water, is prohibited for at least two weeks.
Peeling tattoo
A few days after getting the tattoo, you will notice slight flaking, and the tattoo itself will begin to itch and flake slightly. Don't be nervous or panic, it's completely natural. Do not use moisturizing lotions or ointments. Also, do not scratch or peel the tattoo - let the scab fall off on its own. Remember that at this time your tattoo is almost healed, do not spoil everything at the last stage.
Protecting your tattoo from the sun
Once the tattoo has completely healed, remember that you will have to try to protect it from direct contact. sun rays, which can easily ruin even the most beautiful tattoo. Before going out into the sun in hot climates, before tanning, lubricate your tattoo protective cream with a factor of 30SPF. It will protect your tattoo and you can be proud of it for years to come.
It is impossible to say exactly how long it will take for a tattoo to heal, since there is no universal answer to this question. Much depends on the characteristics of the body, on how quickly the wounds on the body of a particular person heal. However, in any case, you need to follow the recommendations regarding tattoo care, as this will significantly speed up the process.
Much depends on which part of the body was chosen for drawing. As a rule, tattoos on the forearms heal fastest, and tattoos on the ankles heal slowest.
On average, 2-3 days after tattooing, a crust appears on the skin. It is not recommended to remove it - it will disappear on its own when the healing process is completed. After 7-10 days, as a rule, the rehabilitation period has already passed: the redness disappears, the skin no longer irritates, the scab completely disappears. During this entire time, you should not scratch the area of the body where the tattoo was made, even if the itching becomes severe. To ease discomfort, use a soothing soft cream.
Generally, tattoo healing takes 1 to 2 weeks, but the recovery period may be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances. If correction of the pattern is required, be prepared for the healing time to approximately double.
After the procedure, the skin under and around the pattern turns red and discomfort appears. To facilitate the healing process, it is recommended to wear a bandage on the damaged area of the body for a while, and when removing it, carefully rinse the skin with cold water. You should not use a washcloth or towel for the first 4-5 days after applying the design.
It is important that the tattoo bandage, as well as the clothes you wear, are made from natural fabrics. When using synthetics, there is a high risk of an allergic reaction.
In the first 10 days after getting a tattoo, it is strictly forbidden to visit a solarium, expose the damaged area of skin to sunlight, go to the bathhouse, swim in public pools, rivers, seas, or play sports.
