How to make a three-dimensional cardboard snowflake. Beautiful snowflakes from paper - diagrams and templates for cutting out snowflakes with your own hands
Many of us can make simple paper snowflakes. Openwork volumetric snowflakes, which are made from the same source material, look much more interesting and beautiful. Despite the complex and bizarre patterns, making such crafts with your own hands is not at all difficult. Below we present, as an example, four master classes that present different techniques for making voluminous snowflakes with your own hands.
Master class No. 1: do-it-yourself voluminous snowflake made of colored stripes
An openwork snowflake can be made using weaving techniques. By combining strips of paper by color, you will get a very bright and interesting snowflake. You can make the strips themselves from double-sided colored paper or take a simpler route and buy regular quilling strips.
Materials
To make a voluminous snowflake from colored stripes with your own hands, make sure you have:
- quilling papers;
- PVA glue;
- tassels;
- clothespins
In total, to make one snowflake you will need 20 stripes. The snowflake itself needs to be made by making its halves.
Step 1. Place blue stripes on the work table in a crisscross pattern.
Step 2. Along the edges of them, place strips of light blue and cream colors in pairs.
When laying out the strips, weave them together.
Step 3. Lubricate the ends of the strips with PVA glue and glue them together. First, as shown in the photo, glue strips of light color.
Step 4. Glue strips to the light rays blue color. Don't touch the blue ones yet. This will be half a snowflake.
Step 5. Make the other half of the snowflake in the same way. Put them together.
Step 6. Glue the ends of the blue stripes, inserting them into the rays of the snowflake. The strips of one half need to be threaded and glued to the rays of the second half. Secure the gluing areas with clothespins and wait until the glue dries completely.
Step 7. Remove the clothespins. The openwork volumetric snowflake is ready!
Master class No. 2: DIY 3D snowflake
Despite the apparent complexity, making a 3D snowflake with your own hands is very simple. Children will especially enjoy this activity. You can make a variety of ornaments for snowflakes, showing your imagination.
Materials
To create this craft you will need:
- sheets of paper;
- pencil;
- scissors;
- stapler
Paper will be needed in the form of small squares of 10 x 10 cm. To make one snowflake you will need 10 pieces.
Step 1. First you will need to cut out a snowflake from simple sheet paper. Take one piece of paper and fold it in half twice.
Step 2. Bend the resulting square diagonally.
Step 3. Use a pencil to draw the design that you will need to cut out.
Step 4. Cut the triangle along the pre-drawn lines.
Step 5. Lay out the snowflake.
Step 6. Make similar blanks from the remaining pieces of paper.
Step 7. Fold five flat snowflakes into a circle. Fasten them together using a stapler.
Step 8. Make the same half-volume snowflake from the remaining five blanks.
Step 9. Connect both halves with a stapler and carefully straighten them with your fingers.
Your large voluminous snowflake is ready. You can tie a ribbon or thread to it and decorate the room with a snowflake.
Master class No. 3: three-dimensional snowflake from one sheet of paper
Most three-dimensional snowflakes are made from several sheets of paper, but you can cope with a similar task by taking just one sheet as the starting material.
Materials
To make a voluminous snowflake from one sheet of paper with your own hands, you need to prepare:
- A4 sheet of paper;
- scissors;
- glue;
- pencil;
- eraser.
Step 1. Fold the sheet of paper diagonally, cut off the bottom excess strip so that when you turn the paper you get a square.
Step 2. Fold the square folded diagonally in half again as shown in the photo. As a result, you should end up with a triangle.
Step 3. Cut petals from the triangle. If you want the petals to come out even, you can first draw them with a pencil and then erase the extra lines.
Step 4. Follow the contours of the petals along the edges and make cuts along these lines. Do not cut the petals until the end.
Step 5. Unfold the resulting workpiece.
Step 6. Lubricate the tip of the middle part of the petal with glue and glue it to the middle of the workpiece, pressing lightly with your finger.
Step 7. Glue the middle parts of the remaining petals in the same way.
Step 8. The volumetric snowflake is ready. You can make it double sided. To do this, make a similar snowflake from a sheet of paper and glue both parts together, placing them one against the other with their back sides.
The snowflake is ready!
Master class No. 4: three-dimensional snowflake made from several sheets of paper
From ordinary sheets office paper you can make an original three-dimensional snowflake. If you take a whole sheet of standard A4 format, the toy will turn out to be very large. To make it smaller, the sheets will need to be trimmed a little, but remember, they all must be the same size, otherwise the snowflake will not be symmetrical.
Materials
Before you make a voluminous paper snowflake with your own hands, check if you have:
- sheets of A4 paper;
- scissors;
- thin tape;
- stapler;
- satin ribbon.
Step 1. Cut the sheets of paper you have so that you have six equal squares.
Step 2. Fold the square diagonally, then fold it again, folding it in half. As a result, you should end up with a triangle with a single fold along one edge, two along the second and several sheets at the bottom.
Step 3. Place the triangle on your work surface and carefully make three cuts. Cut strips from the double pleat side to the single pleat side. They should be parallel to the bottom side of the triangle. Make cuts not reaching 1 cm to the end.
Step 4. Unfold the workpiece, you should get a square with cuts.
Step 5. Fold the strips of paper along the cuts, those closer to the center, towards each other, forming something like a cylinder. Fasten them by gluing them on the inside with a thin strip of tape.
Step 6. Turn the square over. Fold the next pair of strips in the same way, but fold them in the opposite direction. Continue attaching and alternating stripes further. As a result, you should end up with a figure like this. This is one of the rays of a volumetric snowflake.
Step 7. Make five more similar blanks from squares of paper.
Step 8. Place the rays of the snowflake next to each other with their sides and first fasten them with a stapler at the bottom, and then at the top.
Pass the ribbon through the snowflake and tie it into a loop. She's ready!
Although New Year's troubles occupy all our thoughts since the beginning of December, we should not forget about decorating the house. If you prepare decorations and toys in advance, then the leisurely process of New Year's room decoration will bring extremely positive emotions.
Paper snowflakes are filled in anticipation of New Year's holidays windows of houses, shopping centers, shops, schools, offices. Cutting snowflakes as a type of applied art has acquired its own name “paper-plastic”.
Do-it-yourself volumetric paper snowflakes: step-by-step instructions, photos
Together with your household members, you can make a whole garland from hand-made decor and hang it on the curtains or under the ceiling. To do this, snowflakes are cut out in different sizes and fixed with thread at different levels.
Several garlands made in this way will create the illusion of snowfall. To create three-dimensional 3D snowflakes you will need:
- white construction paper (but if you are using a specific color to decorate the room, you can use that)
- stapler
- sharp stationery or nail scissors
- ruler, pencil
- PVA glue or any other paper glue
Instructions for making a three-dimensional snowflake:
- Let's prepare a stencil that will help in making individual segments of the future snowflake. On a thick sheet of paper, or better yet, cardboard, draw 6 straight parallel lines. Place them 1 cm apart.
- After this, take the pre-prepared squares. There should be 6 of them. If you decide to make large snowflakes, then take thick paper. You can also use felt.
- We fold the square diagonally and mark the lines on the triangle we have created using a stencil (6 pieces on each side). Let's cut them. You can make more lines than shown in the photo.
- Carefully unfold the square with the cuts and connect the first pair of opposite corners in series (apply glue to the tips of the corners).
- We wrap the second pair of corners in the opposite direction and glue the ends together. We repeat everything with the third pair of corners, and then with the fourth.
Connecting the corners of the first inner square
- The resulting segment is 1/6 of a snowflake and we need to continue making cuts and gluing the tips of the corners for another 5 squares.
- When all the segments are ready, we connect them with a stapler: first, the first parts are connected together, and then the remaining 3.
- The resulting two halves of three segments are also connected with a stapler. To prevent the snowflake from falling apart, you need to secure it not with one paper clip, but with several.
The second version of volumetric snowflakes
- We will also make this snowflake from 6 parts of the same size.
- We prepare the squares again: fold the sheet diagonally and cut off the extra rectangular “tail”. We do not unfold the resulting triangle, but fold it again into a smaller triangle.
- Now you need to cut out the petals correctly. How to do this, see the photo.
- Inside the petals we draw 2 lines, making sure that they do not intersect and do not reach the fold, and we make cuts.
- Carefully unfold the snowflake detail. In front of us should lie a figure of four petals with three separate segments coming out from the base of each petal.
- We take the middle segment and, having smeared its tip with glue, fix it in the center.
- We do the same procedure with the remaining segments of the petals.
- We prepare the second part of the snowflake in the same way. After this, we connect both parts with their flat sides to each other crosswise.

- Prepare 12 identical parts for the future ball - rounded pentagons.
- For those who are making such a ball for the first time, we recommend cutting out larger parts. The cuts on each workpiece must be made strictly along the lines, which are indicated by dotted lines on the template.
- We pierce the center of the first part and pull a thread with a loop through it. secure with tape or glue.
- Now let's connect three parts, and then three more. You should get half of the future ball.
- When the second half of the ball is ready, we will connect them together.
Below is a diagram of drawing blanks for the ball. Of course, you can print a ready-made template, but if you don’t have a printer, then do the following:
- Draw a pentagon. Draw a circle on one side of it, repeat on each side.
- Erase the auxiliary lines with an eraser, leaving those along which you will make cuts.
How to connect the parts can be seen in the photo.

We make folds as in the photo
Look at the drawing and carefully transfer all the dotted lines.
- We bend each petal in the center, directing the paper segments away from us. We also bend each triangular tip of the petal inward from opposite sides.
- We apply our blank with dotted lines and check how smoothly we have bent each segment.
Bend the tips of each petal
Let's check the fold lines
- On the opposite side, we glue the triangles of petals together.
Glue two corners of each snowflake segment
- All that remains is to sprinkle the star with sparkles and glue a bead or other interesting detail. The snowflake is suspended by a thread from one of the segments.

Volumetric snowflakes made from strips of paper: diagrams
With a snowflake made from strips of paper you will have to work harder, but as a result you will get a beautiful and original decoration.
- So, let's cut paper strips. There should be 12 of them.
The width of the strip is 1.5 cm, the length is 30 cm (you can use strips of a different size: 1 cm/20 cm). - Draw strips on paper and cut them out. We take two strips and connect them crosswise in the center. We take two more strips and intertwine them on both sides, as if weaving a basket.
- Where the strips overlap each other, we apply glue for strength.
- Add two more strips across and fix them with glue.
“Weave” two other strips on the sides
- Now we fix each corner pair of strips with glue, connecting them to each other. We should get a star with four segments and stripes between them.
- We repeat everything with the other half of the snowflake. After this, we connect both halves by gluing them together (we rotate the halves at an angle of 45 degrees). We glue the middle well so that the snowflake is not too convex.
- All that remains is to glue the ends of the strips to the corners of the petals.

Necessary materials for origami children's snowflakes for the New Year
- thick colored sheet
- pencil and ruler
- needle and thread
- scissors
Instructions for a master class on children's snowflakes using the origami technique
- To begin, we cut out a strip 5-7 cm wide and about 20 cm long. Using a pencil and ruler, we make notes on every centimeter along the length. On top we cut out an imitation of a “fence”, as shown in the photo. In the middle of the resulting columns we draw small diamonds. Then we mark the middle of each centimeter with dots and pierce them with a thin needle.
- Now we take a ruler and place it on top of the first line dividing our “fence” section in half. Carefully bend the workpiece inward, and then remove the ruler and bend it in the opposite direction. We repeat the same with each section. The result should be an accordion, as in the photo below.
- We hold the accordion tightly with the fingers of one hand and use scissors to cut out the previously marked diamond shapes in the middle of each section.
- We take a needle and thread and carefully thread it through the small holes that we have already pierced with a needle two steps ago.
Note! The thread needs to be thick so that it holds the finished structure tightly!
- When the thread has already passed through all the points, we reinsert it into the first hole to close the structure.
- We remove the needle and begin to gradually tighten the thread until a tight ring is formed. We tie the thread into a knot, and place a spool on top of the snowflake to straighten it.
- We form a loop from the remaining thread and our children's snowflake is ready! And for those who want to master the pure origami technique for creating snowflakes, we have selected a video tutorial with step by step diagram below.

Quilling is the real art of weaving amazing beauty crafts and cards from simple strips of paper. Using the quilling technique, you can create truly unique openwork snowflakes with your own hands, a direct confirmation of which is our next master class with step-by-step photos. But the most amazing thing is that by swapping individual parts and adding new elements, you can create several different openwork snowflakes with your own hands using the quilling technique according to one general pattern.
Necessary materials for an openwork snowflake using the quilling technique
- pencil and ruler
- scissors
- glue and brush
Instructions for a master class on openwork snowflakes using quilling techniques
- Using a ruler and a simple pencil you need to draw a sheet. To do this, make 0.5 cm marks along the width of the sheet and draw lines along the entire length. Then we cut out the strips with scissors.
- To form the rolls you will need an awl. We wind the strip onto it quite tightly, and then let the roll unravel a little and glue the edge to its base.
- The snowflake will be based on one round element and six drop-shaped rolls. To get an element in the form of a drop, you need to lightly squeeze one edge of the round roll with your fingers. We connect the structure with glue.
- Now add six eye-shaped rolls to the base. We will also make them from round rolls, but by flattening both edges with our fingers. Glue the “eyes” between the drops according to the template below.
- Now we need small rolls, so we fold the standard strip in half and cut it into two parts. From each small strip we twist a small round roll. To begin with, you will need six of these elements.
- We glue small rolls along the edges of the elements in the form of a cat's eye.
- We roll six standard large rolls.
- We glue them to the drop-shaped elements, as shown in the diagram below.
- Now we need six square rolls. We will form them from standard round ones, slightly flattening the sides into a square shape.
- We glue the squares to the large round elements, having first turned them into the shape of rhombuses.
- All that remains is to twist a large round roll according to the standard pattern and glue it to the top of our craft. Let the snowflake dry completely and thread the thread through the large roll. Ready!

1. Before you start making a snowflake, you need to come up with a shape, i.e. what it will look like. At this stage, it is also worth considering what form will be durable and will not come apart.
2. Once you've come up with a shape, you can start gluing. In this case, Moment glue is used, but if you don’t have it, you can try replacing it with PVA glue.
2.1 First glue the inner circle of the snowflake. After this, you need to leave the glue to dry and this small part of the snowflake to get stronger.
2.2 Start gluing the next circle.
* Using the same scheme, you can “build” several circles, but remember that the material is fragile, which means you shouldn’t get excited and make huge snowflakes.
2.3 After gluing, leave your snowflakes for a day.
3. Time to paint the snowflake. For this you can use acrylic paint. Maybe, the best option There will be paint in a can, but it is better to apply it outdoors and not indoors.
* You should not use gouache - not only will it take longer to dry, but it may also crack if applied in a thick layer.
*If you're using acrylic paint, you'll also want to choose a brush that can get into all the crevices of the pasta.
* It is advisable to have several brushes different sizes, for convenience. If necessary, you can apply a second coat of paint.
4. Decorating a snowflake. You can use glitter or artificial snow, for example.
