Sew a wide belt for a dress with your own hands. How to sew a belt for clothes yourself
Every girl wants to look more attractive. This largely depends on the diversity of her wardrobe. And if there is no desire or opportunity to purchase a new dress, then various accessories can refresh the existing one and add some zest. A special role is played by a belt, which can attract and focus attention on your person, highlight the beauty of your figure and create a unique image. Satin belts are popular for evening, cocktail or wedding dresses, which as decoration can add romance, tenderness and sophistication without any decorative elements.

How to make the right choice
In order to choose the satin belt option that best suits your outfit, you need to adhere to some basic rules.
- Certain shapes of this accessory are ideal for certain body types. So, a triangle figure looks best with thin lines at the waist with full-length outfits. A corset-shaped belt defines the waistline of a rectangular figure. Girls with a pear-shaped figure should give preference to wide models.
- Universal colors(brown, blue, black, beige) do not need to decorate the belt with other accessories.
- With a multi-layered textured dress with different patterns, a narrow ribbon can get lost. Therefore, you should choose a wider model.
- For many years, the ideal option was when the belt was combined with a handbag and shoes. But now it’s fashionable to combine incongruous things, so you can combine satin at the waist with a handbag, and choose shoes in a contrasting color.
- Dresses made of bright fabrics will not harmonize with an accessory of a “dirty” color.
- A belt that matches the color of the dress does not serve any function other than forming the correct silhouette. Such models are suitable for girls with a poorly defined waist.
- Bright color attracts the eye. Therefore, with such an accessory you can visually adjust the length of your legs and torso, placing it above or below the waistline.

Decorating a wedding dress
Wedding salons offer a wide range of dresses that can satisfy even the most demanding needs of brides. And to add your individuality to a future outfit and maintain general style design, dress code and holiday atmosphere, you can decorate the dress with a beautiful satin belt.
You can choose a belt to match the dress or the color of the groom’s shirt, but an accessory in a contrasting color: red or blue looks especially advantageous. It perfectly emphasizes snow-white wedding dress, will create the right emphasis on the waist and envelop the image with sensuality and passion. This accessory looks harmonious, tied in a large bow, decorated with rhinestones or flowers, complemented by a necklace, earrings, shoes or a bouquet to match the belt.
We create with our own hands
Before you start creating a satin accessory, you need to clearly identify the following points:
- dress for the future belt (evening, business, wedding, everyday);
- preference between universality and certainty;
- purpose (to emphasize the dignity of the figure, to play the role of decoration, to maintain the shape of the dress).
To create a basic belt from fabric, you need to prepare sewing tools, satin fabric desired color and creative mood.
- To obtain the required length of the future belt, you need measure your waist size and multiply it by two.
- Cut a strip of fabric, equal to the measured length and width, which should be twice the intended width (+1 cm).
- Along the edges of the strip measure half a centimeter and mark the lines with chalk.
- Sew a belt along this drawn line, starting with stitching on one side.
- Turn out the belt through the unstitched side, then sew it up too.
- Tie beautifully on a dress and enjoy the result.
How to make a beautiful belt with your own hands, see the following video.
How to tie it beautifully
A satin belt can be beautifully decorated in the form of a tied bow. Let's look at some options.
- French bow: an elegant model in which the bow is tied with loops rolled into half-bows.
- Butterfly bow It is knitted as follows: the left end of the belt is fixed to the right and circled around. The left one stretches upward, and the right one stretches perpendicularly to the other side, forming a half-knot. The lower part is folded into a half-bow-loop and moved to the side, and the upper part is passed down. At this moment you need to hold the place of the knot. The free end is also folded into a half-bow and wrapped around the first one. After which the loop is carefully tightened.
- Single loop: The half-knot, like in a butterfly, is completed as follows: create a loop from the upper end, wrap the lower end around it and pull it into the knot.
Hello, dears!
I tested these ideas and am slowly purchasing/sewing these things (accessories, jewelry, shoes) for my wardrobe.
They really suit all body types, the items are simple in design, but this is not a wardrobe from Evelina Khromtchenko. I was pleased that among the 50 items offered there was no alcoholic T-shirt, which does not suit me at all. And there are also such original things that no one usually wears, only those whom we consider very stylish)
In general, the theory, as always, is very simple. Well, how we love
In addition, the course includes determining the color type and issuing convenient palettes for my shopping. Yes, it turned out that I’m a light spring, but it’s a shame)
By the way, it turned out that those colors to which I have always been drawn in life (and in the interior too) suit me best - light, clean, delicate.
And yet, I don’t wear trousers (for me personally this is not cost-effective; my trousers and jeans were constantly torn before), but I do wear leggings. Therefore, my ideal things turned out to be not 50, but 46. I will share with you on the blog information on these things - how to choose, where to buy, something easier, faster and cheaper to sew.
And today it will be basic wide belt, it is also called sash belt or OBI belt.
What should a basic wide belt be?
- simple design
- good quality
- without buckles and other parts
- plain
- dark shades of your color palette (in the course everything is indicated conveniently and clearly by color)
This belt is suitable for all other items in the wardrobe, always looks stylish, visually narrows the waist and correctly changes the shape of voluminous items.
How to sew a basic wide sash?
I couldn't find such a belt in stores, so I decided to sew it myself. It matches all my skirts perfectly and emphasizes my waist.
One side of my belt is leather (I ripped open an old leather vest), the other is black fabric scraps from sewing skirts.
You need to make the patterns yourself. And it’s better to first sew such a belt from ordinary fabric (as I did) and see if certain sizes suit you. In the article I will provide patterns according to my sizes (waist 65 cm, height 157), but I think it will suit other sizes. Just what more woman, the wider the belt should be to harmonize with your build. Yes, there is a slot in the belt so that when tying, one end of the belt is threaded into it (on the back) and moved forward. This article will contain MK, how to sew such a basic wide OBI sash belt, what to wear it with and inspiring images.
Master class on sewing a wide basic belt-sash
My belt was planned to be leather on the outside, and regular black fabric on the inside (the side towards the body).
I needed:
- skin flaps
- scraps of black fabric
- doublerin (any color)
- black threads
- foot for thick fabric or sewing machine, which will cope with the skin.
1. Cut a basic wide belt
Because I first tried everything on regular fabric, but now I boldly cut it directly on the skin. I add 1 cm allowances on all sides, incl. for the seam of the slot. I draw the details and cut them out.
I then lay these leather pieces face to face with the black fabric and cut the inside of the waistband. It is important not to confuse all these bevels on parts 2, 3 and 4
2. Sewing the basic OBI belt
The scheme is simple.
We duplicate all the details with duplicator- both external and internal belts. I duplicated the details over the entire area, but it was possible not to duplicate the seam allowances, otherwise I would get tired of sewing such a thickness.
Sew together the details of each belt in the order as in the figure, from 1 to 6 parts.
Iron the seams. With skin only through a damp cloth and a low-heat iron.
We sew the place where the slot will be only 1 cm from each edge, then iron it out (I also secured it with pins).

How to sew a belt: types of belts and preparation for work
How to sew a belt with your own hands? It's not difficult at all! In general, belts vary in how they are fastened: they are simply tied or they use some kind of fastening hardware. A variety of buckles, hooks, buttons, buttons, etc. can be used as such accessories.
Belts that are supposed to be tied are usually much longer than belts with a fastener and, accordingly, you will need more fabric to sew them. You should add at least 40 cm to your waist circumference, and it is best to first tie a rope, ribbon or centimeter around your waist, select the length of the ends of the belt after the knot that suits the model, and measure the total length.
For a belt that will be fastened with a buckle, add about 15 cm to the waist circumference measurement and punch holes: one exactly according to the waist circumference, and several others in increments of 2.5-3 cm.
Belts that will be tied are not additionally reinforced in any way, unlike belts with buckles and shaped belts, which must be backed up with a rigid adhesive cushioning material. If such material is not available, you can use adhesive interlining, ironing it in several layers.
The tie belt and belted belt are basically rectangles, while the shaped belt is shaped slightly curved to fit the shape of the body. Most often, such a belt is fastened with buttons or it can be made with eyelets installed at the edges and tightened with lacing.
Original belt – great way give a new meaning to your usual clothes. Sew a belt from fabric or leather in a contrasting color, use unusual accessories and your image will immediately change!

They create style and definition The tone of the outfit is: businesslike, casual, romantic, daring, playful. Fashion for belts changes as often as for clothing. But despite their a huge variety is distinguished by only 3 main types: soft, which I tie T on a knot, figured and hard with a buckle- belt.
The belt should go well with the clothes in color and style; unfortunately, it is not always possible to find a suitable accessory on sale. You can sew a belt yourself; it’s not difficult and much cheaper than buying a ready-made one.
How to make a belt with your own hands with a buckle?
Making a belt with a buckle will require a lot of time and patience from you, but sewing it is not difficult. It can be made from thin leather or a high-quality substitute; it will also need to be sealed with a hard non-woven fabric or a special lining-seal for belts. Moreover, the lining must be cut without seam allowances. There are 2 main ways to make buckle belts: classic and accelerated. To make a belt you will need: fabric, leather or dermantine 15 cm longer than your waist circumference, a padding lining of the same length, a buckle.
Let's consider first classic way belt manufacturing. Cut out 2 strips of fabric, their width should be equal to the width of the belt you want to get, and their length should be equal to the waist circumference plus 15 cm. You should also take into account the seam allowances, optimally 0.5-0.7 cm. You need to cut from the lining stripes with the same length and width as the belt only without seam allowances. When all the parts are cut out, iron the interlining or a special seal for the belts onto the outer part of the product from the wrong side.
Baste the allowances on the cuts of the outer part to the wrong side along the edge of the seal, as shown in the figure. The allowances at the corners should be slightly tucked. Also baste the allowances on the cuts of the inner part to the wrong side. Now iron both pieces and then fold them so that the wrong sides are on the inside and pin them together with safety pins. Stitch the belt from the front side along the edges, while also grabbing the inner part.
The accelerated method is somewhat different from the classic one. To make a belt, you will need 1 strip of fabric or leather, the length equal to the length of the belt with allowances for seams, and the width should correspond to double the width of the finished product. The sealing lining is equal to the length of the finished product and the width of one part of the belt; seam allowances do not need to be taken into account.
Fold the strip of fabric lengthwise and in half, with the right side on the inside. Then start stitching down the longitudinal sections. Fold the garment so that the seam is in the middle, and iron the seam allowances. Now move on to processing short cuts. Stitch the edges of the waistband to the desired shape. For convenience, you can use a template for the ends of the belt.
Then trim off the seam allowances, leaving a few mm. Cut the allowances at the corners of the waistband at an angle, and make notches at the rounded corners. Next, turn the product right side out and iron it, paying special attention to the ends and edges. Paste in by i With the lining with the adhesive side facing the seams, iron the waistband with the lining. Final stage- stitching the product along the contour.
Sewing the buckle and covering it with fabric. Make a small hole 3 cm from the free edge of the belt and cut out a circle using a hole punch or an awl. Finish the hole with a buttonhole stitch and thread a peg through it. Wrap the jumper with the end of the belt and baste it to the wrong side of the belt with an oblique or zigzag seam, and then topstitch. Punch blocks on the opposite side. One of them should be at a distance around the waist, and all the others should be at intervals of 3 cm.
Buckles covered with fabric look beautiful; this method will also help in cases where you cannot find a suitable one in the store. To cover the buckle with fabric, you can use the same material as for the belt itself or something else. To begin, cut out 2 pieces of fabric corresponding to the size of the buckle plus allowances for stitching. If the fabric is thin, then seal its outer part with non-woven fabric, ironing it on the wrong side. Fold the parts right sides inward, mark the outer contour of the buckle with chalk or a simple pencil. The inner contour must be marked with a line of small stitches. Cut out the fabric inside the stitching, leave a seam allowance of about 5 mm around the perimeter, and notch the corners.
Cut the piece of fabric close to the stitching using short sections for the jumper. Then turn the piece right side out and put it on the buckle. The seam should be on inner edge buckles. Now cut the part of the fabric that you cut for the jumper, adjusting it to the width of the buckle and glue it with special fabric glue, and then sew it crosswise to the bottom. The stitches should not be visible from the front side. At the corners, cut the bottom of the fabric and tuck it in, then wrap the edges around the buckle, fold it over and hem it with small stitches on the side of the inner seam. Make sure that the stitches are not visible on the right side of the waistband.
DIY wide belt : manufacturing
This belt is called “Obi”; it can be sewn from fabric, leather or suede. This belt model looks very elegant and luxurious. First of all, you need to measure your waist circumference and prepare the necessary materials. To sew an obi belt you will need: any fabric, leather, dermantine or suede, interlining and a printed pattern (pictured). Pattern scale - 1 square corresponds to 2.5 cm of the product, the pattern includes seam allowances of 0.5 cm. Belt pattern details:
- Detail of the middle part of the belt with a fold.
- 2 side parts of the product.
- 2 tie pieces- with a bend.
- 2 parts for a brush.
First, make tucks in the front part, matching the points that were transferred from the paper pattern. You will need to sew stitches along the pintucks using a sewing machine. The fabric cuts on the sides must be overcast by hand or with an overlocker. You can also glue the side edges with the thinnest non-woven fabric, ironing it on them.
The sections of the side part of the product must be covered with a hem seam.
Connect the side parts of the belt with the middle one, folding the side part with the central part, right sides inward. In this case, the side cuts should be aligned evenly. Now the parts can be stitched together and the new seam pressed, the cut should be smoothed to the side of the product. Machine stitch along the front side, departing from the edge approximately 5 mm. Make sure that the stitching and the distance from the edge are even throughout, otherwise the work will look sloppy. The stitching will not only serve a decorative function, it will also strengthen the side seam.
Now you need to start processing the ties. Fold the seams back to back on both sides and fold them in half, then topstitch along the long side on the right side. Also sew the 2nd tie. fold it up three times along the long edge and under fire part. Then the product iron and fold the rest. Next stitched on a sewing machine.
Place one free end of the tie into the narrow part on the side to a depth of at least 2 cm. Then stitch the edge, connecting the parts of the product. Do the same with the second tie.
Decorate the free edges of the ties with tassels as shown in the photo. To make the tassels hold more firmly, secure them with machine stitching.
How to sew a belt according to your body shape?
The figured belt is made according to a special pattern and exactly matches the shape of the body. It can be wide or narrow, and just like a belt with a buckle, it is reinforced with a padding lining or non-woven fabric in several layers. The algorithm for making this product is similar to sewing a belt. A figured belt can be strengthened with inserts similar to those inserted into corsets. It is made of fabric, wool or leather.
DIY belt: video
It’s easy to sew a belt with your own hands, and even someone who has never had sewing experience can cope with this task. Start by doing models with ties, and then move on to more complex types of belts and figured belts. It is easiest to sew a belt from soft and thin fabrics; working with leather and dermantine requires some sewing skills.
Any belt must have its own rigidity so that it retains its original shape during wear. Since the belt is an important clothing accessory, it must be done professionally. A simple belt with a fastener is sealed with ordinary medium-density non-woven fabric. Rigid belts and belts are sealed using heavy adhesive materials, including those used to stiffen lambrequins. There are also special adhesive tapes for belts. The main requirement is that the seal must adhere firmly to the fabric. Most removable belts and belts are attached to the product using belt loops. Belt loops are special loops sewn into the side seams of your product.
Classification of belts and straps
Belt. This is a belt with a hard seal. The belt is fastened with buckles of various modifications. to the belt can be read in the article “Attaching a buckle to a belt.”
Figured removable belt. The belt with curly lines is fastened with special ties, buttons or has.

Thread loop
The belt loop is formed with long stitches, which are secured with overcasting over the edge.
This is done by tightening a new loop of thread through the last loop.
It is a stitched roll made of fabric. The ends of the roll are built into the seam.
A flat loop that is sewn to both the side seam and the stitched waistband.

Fig.1
Old items made of natural or artificial leather are suitable for this.
If the material is thick enough, then the belt does not need to be duplicated. It is better to duplicate thin leather with thick fabric, grosgrain tape or non-woven fabric.
Here are some ideas for original belts(Fig. 1), the diagrams of which are presented in Fig. 2. One square = 2.5 cm. The length of the belt should be increased in accordance with your waist size.
Belt with duplicating material. Option 1. If the fabric for the belt does not fray, it is dense enough, but not very thick. Before cutting, you can glue a strip of interlining to the wrong side of the belt material, then cut out the belt without seam allowances. The belt will look better if it is topstitched with decorative stitching.
2 options. Lined belt. In this case, add 0.5 cm to the seam allowances. Cut out the belt parts from the main material, then from interlining and duplicating materials. Glue the interlining to the waistband. Place the pieces right sides together, baste, and sew, leaving a small area at the back of the waistband for turning out. Turn it right side out, sweep out the waistband, and iron from the lining side. Make a decorative delay (by machine or by hand), remembering to sew up the turning hole.
Clasp. Several options can be offered:
- We select a suitable buckle (or make it ourselves), and make eyelets (holes for the pin) in the workshop. If it is not possible to make eyelets, we sew small loops by machine or by hand.

Since in these models the clasp is at the back, you can use:
- buttons
- hooks and loops
- buttons with loops
- sew on the tape with Velcro fastener

DIY buckle
- a decorative element that should look beautiful and impressive.
If you don't find one that matches your belt buckles, cover any buckle with fabric, but do not cover the vertical bar.
How to cover a buckle with fabric
Fold two pieces of fabric (if the fabric is thin, reinforce the outer part with non-woven fabric) right sides together and mark the contours of the buckle with tailor's chalk or pencil.
Sew a fine stitch along the inner contour. Cut the fabric inside a small rectangle, leaving a seam allowance of 0.5 cm, cut the seam allowance diagonally in the corner.
For a vertical strip, cut one piece of fabric to the line (1). Turn the part inside out and place the buckle between the layers of fabric, with the seams matching the inner contour of the buckle
Cut a piece of fabric with slits for the vertical strip to the width buckles and glue with textile glue or sew with a velvet seam to another flap, and the seam should not be visible from the front side of the fabric. Turn the corners of the second flap to the wrong side and cut off. Then turn this flap over buckle, turn over and sew with small stitches over the inside seams (2). On the outside buckles these stitches should not be visible.
How to sew a buckle with a pin From the open straight end of the belt, measure approx. 3 cm and punch a hole for the peg buckles. Overcast the hole along the entire circumference with a buttonhole stitch (3). Insert the pin into the hole.
Turn the end of the belt onto the inside of the belt and sew it with overlock stitches (4) or overcast the edges with a zigzag stitch and stitch the end of the belt (5). At the other end of the belt, punch the blocks: one - in exact accordance with the waist circumference, and the rest - at intervals - approx. 3 cm.
Blocks can be made in a workshop (usually a metal repair shop). You can make the blocks yourself by purchasing a kit in the store and using the included instructions. I prefer to make blocks in the workshop - it has a more marketable appearance.
Other options for wrapping a buckle A round buckle can be covered with leatherette or leather tape, thick threads of the desired color (burgundy buckle in the photo at the beginning of the article) and simply crocheted.
Hard belt
Its name speaks for itself. For such a belt, a pattern is always given and it is necessarily reinforced with a special rigid gasket (for example, Schabrackeneinlage). You can also iron interlining H 250 in several layers.
A rigid belt made of fabric is sewn like a regular belt, with the only difference being that to speed up the sewing process, you can fold the belt parts right sides together and stitch the longitudinal sections, leaving the straight short sections open.
and a belt, made by yourself, will decorate your new thing.

Women always try to follow fashion, look beautiful, fashionable and attractive. Through products and accessories, makeup, and hairstyles, the female gender expresses their inner mood, highlight their natural talents and change their shortcomings. Various accessories that craftswomen make even at home most often help create a unique and inimitable image: earrings, watches, belts and straps, chains with cute pendants, bracelets. How to sew a beautiful belt for a dress or coat with your own hands from simple material? Pretty easy.
The dress is perhaps the most important part of women's clothing. Even the most light dress With the help of a belt, you can instantly create a woman’s image that is fashionable and unusual, and add some zest to it. In the world of the fashion industry, there are three main forms of belts: soft, hard with a buckle (strap) and figured.
Do you think a strict leather strap or a hard leatherette strap is more suitable for a boy? Not at all. It's all a matter of how to make it and what to wear it with.
For interesting things creative process you will need:
Stages of creative work:
Using a meter, you need to take the main measurement - waist circumference. We increase the resulting number twice. It is also necessary to take into account two cm for allowances and four centimeters for the fastener. Thus, it turns out that the length of the belt = waist circumference x 2 plus 2 centimeters + 4 centimeters. The width of the belt can be any, everything will depend on the model of the dress and personal preferences.
Based on the created dimensions, we will cut out the item. It is worth cutting the belt according to the width of the fabric, since the weave of the material along the thread is more elastic, it will be easier for us to shape the belt.
Now you need to cut out the interlining and attach it to the item.
Non-woven material is a non-woven material with glue on one side. With its help you can add auxiliary density lb material and fix the mold so that the product does not change when worn. The length of this part will be equal to the length of the belt. You can attach the interlining to the wrong side using an iron and remove the excess.
Fold the item in half lengthwise and iron everything.
The belt folded in half with the front side inward will need to be sewn along one short edge and along the entire length along the cut.
Let's slowly turn the thing out on the front side, and sew the last side cut. Then we iron the belt well.
We will manually sew buttons (or another type of fastener) if they are provided in your model.
This belt can be decorated in different ways. Your image can become romantic and festive.
Traditional belts can be made not only narrow, but also wide; it is important not to forget to reinforce them with non-woven fabric. These parts can be secured at the waist using snaps, buttons, Velcro or hooks. Or the belt can be sewn without fasteners, simply tying it. This option is perfect not only for a dress. Decorating these products is a separate part for creativity and imagination. You can decorate them with beads, rhinestones, buttons, chains, cute appliqués and embroidery.
Wide version, sash belt
Wide sash-style belts, very popular among many fashionistas. IN classic version The most common type is a satin sash, but such a product can be sewn from fabric, leather or suede. This model looks quite elegant and chic. They perfectly emphasize the figure, hide many figure flaws and add unusual effect image. Sewing them is a little harder than soft traditional ones, but it’s definitely worth the effort. The result will fully repay all the efforts.
- First you need to cut out all the elements of the future belt: two central parts for the product and four elements for the ties.
- In addition, so that the product holds the mold and did not change while wearing, both central particles will need to be strengthened with a grosgrain ribbon. Its length will be equal to the length of the belt minus 2 centimeters. To calculate the length of the product, the girth of the figure must be divided by half. The width of the item according to the drawing will be two values: in the largest place, and in the narrowest place.
- The ties should be cut in the shape of rectangles six centimeters wide plus two centimeters for allowances. To calculate the length of the strings, you need to add half the waist circumference and the desired length of the ends.
- The main thing is to add one centimeter to the seam allowances along the entire perimeter of the product. Below is a diagram to make it easier to cut out the central particles of the thing.
- After our pattern is completed, all parts of the future belt should be transferred to the wrong side of the fabric and slowly cut out.
- Next, you need to sew the ties together. To do this, fasten the edges with a pin and stitch along the part. On one side the edges of the ties are slightly rounded. Turn them right side out and iron them a little.
- Attach the corsage ribbon to the central elements.
- Place one on the front side from the main parts of the belt, ties. Place the second main piece on top of 1 with the front side facing inward. We fasten them with pins and fix the ends of the ties so that they do not move while sewing. Due to poor fixation of the ends, the entire product can be damaged, remember this when working.
- It is worth leaving a small part of the stitching, since through it the belt can be turned right side out. And then sew the left hole.
- At the end of the work, iron the product completely. So we learned how to sew a belt for a dress using a pattern. Conclusion. If you look into this, you can understand that making a belt from leather or other material is not at all difficult, the main thing is patience, the ability to sew and tie some details. Many people do not start their work out of fear and in vain, because it is very interesting and useful. Well, the most main advice for all beginners, follow the master class and general recommendations for work and then you will definitely succeed.
Do you know what an obi belt is? This is one of the most fashion accessories V women's clothing, which has held its position for more than three years. The obi belt appeared in Japan, where it is still not only a piece of clothing, but also a symbol, a sign of a girl’s position in society and a desirable item of clothing. This is how the writer Lidiya Alekseevna Charskaya describes the obi belt in her fairy tale about a Japanese girl “The Magic Obi”:
“... A wide, silk belt, woven from variegated or pink fabric, gentle and beautiful, like an eastern morning or like a stripe of pink dawn over a sleepy country. Gold tassels run down both ends of the belt.
Japanese girls attach great importance to the obi. The more noble the origin of the mousme (that’s what Japanese girls are called, author’s note), the more magnificent and elegant her obi. Beautiful, lush, with flowers, birds and fans embroidered on it, it cannot belong to a commoner: they wear the most modest belts. But the daughters of rich samurai, nobles and dignitaries boast of their expensive silk obi in front of each other.
And the more noble, the more important the Japanese girl, the more luxurious and rich her obi. He speaks of nobility, the honorable position of her ancestors and their closeness to the throne of the Mikado himself, the Japanese Emperor.”
IN fashion trends The obi, of course, does not have the same purpose as in Japanese clothing culture, but it is a wonderful accessory that can highlight the advantages of your figure or even shape new image, hiding what you don't really like.
But, closer to the point! Structurally, the obi belt is a belt - a corset - a sash or a belt wide in its middle part, which is wrapped twice around your waist and the narrower ends are tied in front with a knot, becoming not only a part that forms the waist, but also an accentuating decoration.
To make the pattern and sew the obi belt, prepare the following:
· fabric, 2 strips from 1.5 to 2 meters long (depending on the length of the ends you want to get) and about 25 centimeters wide;
· paper for patterns or old-fashioned newspaper; if one spread is not enough, you will have to glue an additional strip;
· standard set of sewing accessories
· sewing machine
We start with markings for the pattern. We measure the waist, mark the length of the main part on paper and build a rectangle, the long side of which is equal to the measured waist length, and the short side is 15 centimeters (in general, focus on a width of 10 to 18 cm). We identify the median perpendicular by folding a strip of paper vertically in half. Mark the extreme points of the top and bottom of the widest part of the belt. Then we build a trapezoid from these extreme points to the extreme points of the part where we measured 15 cm.
A belt made in double color scheme. For this design, the ends of the belt can be cut out from fabric of a different color.
We cut out the pattern from paper, it is advisable to move from straight trapezoid lines to smoother ones so that the belt fits laconically at the waist.
We attach the pattern to the fabric, trace it with tailor's chalk and cut it out taking into account the seam allowances. You should get two symmetrical parts.
We fold the parts with the right sides inward and stitch them on a typewriter. The stitching at this stage is performed only on the upper side of the belt.
We open the front side and iron it so that the seam line is pulled to one side. This side will become the inside of the obi. With this offset stitch method, we get a front surface without a seam, which will be hidden on the back. But now you can see that the seam pulled over to the wrong side has lengthened the wrong side. To hide the bottom seam also on the wrong side, we shorten the wrong side by a couple of centimeters, that is, we cut it strictly along the contour, retreating 2 cm.
It's time to sew the ends - the ties of the belt. They should coincide in width with the narrow part of the pattern of the middle part of the belt, in our case it is 15 cm. We measure the length so that it is enough for a turn around the waist and a knot. Long ends look very good, so don't skimp when cutting the fabric. We fold the strips with the middle part of the belt face to face and sew them together. The left and right sides should be mirror images of each other.
The penultimate and most important stage of sewing an obi belt is sewing it along the bottom edge.
Fold the workpiece lengthwise, right side inward. We sweep away the seam, remembering that the seam should be hidden on the inside of the belt, that is, slightly offset. After completing the stitching on the machine, we get the obi turned inside out. Through one of the holes in the ends of the ties, turn the belt right side out. Let's try it on. We determine the convenient length of the ties; the excess can be cut off. We tuck the cut edges inward and sew the ends of the waistband using the outer seam.
All that remains is to try on the obi belt with your chosen outfit.

I want to show you how I do it fabric straps. Initially I came up with the idea of sewing such a belt from leftover fabric for a dress (now I also sew clothes), but then I noticed that it looks great with jeans and shorts. And I sewed a few more different colors. Patchwork fabrics are great for such purposes, but you can use others, a gray-blue strap, for example, I sewed from staple (light dress fabric). The master class turned out to be very detailed, I took a lot of photographs, but in fact this is in the category of “longer to explain than to do.”So let's get started. We select fabrics that match the color. I took the blue one with stars for the dark jeans and the pastel pink one for the light ones. You will also need interlining to seal the fabric, a belt buckle and blocks or eyelets (as well as a press to install them). Let me make a reservation right away that the lack of a device for installing accessories should not upset you. You just need to choose a buckle that does not require installing grommets, this is what I did before.
We cut out two parts: length 90-100 cm (adjust according to our measurements), width according to the size of the buckle crossbar + 1 cm on each side for allowances. We seal the parts with non-woven fabric.
We chop off the parts facing each other. We stitch along three sides, with one end rounded (see photo). We cut off the corners, turn them inside out, and iron them.
We sew, laying a line close to the edge, matching the threads.
We mark the holes and make holes: at the blunt end for the buckle, at the rounded end for the eyelets at the same distance.
I treat each hole with Moment Crystal glue. This is necessary so that the fabric does not become wet later. I squeeze a little glue onto the paper and use a toothpick to go around the edges.
We put on the buckle and sew it on (more often I do this by hand, because it doesn’t always work on a machine, the buckle gets in the way). We install blocks. I admit, this is my favorite moment).
That's all) I hope the master class was useful) I also want to say a big thank you to everyone who leaves comments and pleasant reviews on the site and in the group in contact! You really support and inspire me!
