Knitting a sweater for a toy terrier. Knitted clothes for dogs: models, patterns, patterns
IN cold season your pet may need a warm new thing. Today we will tell you how to knit a sweater for a dog and the benefits of knitted ones.
Knitting clothes for dogs with your own hands is not only a practical way to replenish your home collection of dog clothes, but also an excellent way to spend your leisure time in a calm and interesting way. Factory-made wardrobe items are much inferior in quality to vests and blouses made from precisely selected materials, with the correct measurements and color combinations.
A knitted or crocheted sweater for a dog should be made of high-quality material that will not allow the pet to freeze in winter. Most often, short-haired animals with a small amount of fat in the body and slow heat exchange suffer from the cold. These breeds include most decorative dogs bred specifically for indoor conditions: French bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Maltipoos and others. In hunting breeds, even small ones, heat exchange is much more active, thanks to which the dog can do without raglans and jackets until December.
The advantages of vests and sweaters made from yarn include comfort, high quality material, and lack of seams. This allows you to relieve the skin from chafing, provides practicality and safety due to the absence of locks, zippers and ropes.
Sweaters made from their yarn have quite a lot of advantages, but there are practically no disadvantages. The main disadvantage of such clothing is its low wear resistance. Even small dogs can chew through clothing or damage it with a careless movement.

How to choose tools and yarn
Both experienced and novice needlewomen should begin the process of making sweaters for pets by choosing material and tools. The following requirements are imposed on the materials, which must be compared with the individual characteristics of the dog:
- Environmentally friendly. It's about about the use of yarn made from natural animal wool in knitting: Angora, goat, sheep. However, some dogs may be allergic to some type of yarn, or to wool in general, which is why it is more advisable to purchase high-quality synthetic raw materials.
- Ergonomic characteristics. Pay attention to the length and quality of your pet's fur. A thick undercoat indicates that the material from which the product will be knitted can become electrified, causing discomfort to the fashionista. The yarn should be thick enough to retain heat, but not too thick so that the item is heavy.
- Currently, there are many varieties of yarn where synthetic fiber is mixed with natural fiber. Such alternatives hardly shrink, they are easy to care for and come in many color variations.
Sizing
Before making a pattern or initial blank, it is necessary to take measurements of your pet. This will require four main indicators:
- body length, which is measured from the collar to the upper base of the tail;
- neck circumference, which can be measured at the level of the collar;
- circle chest;
- distance between paws.
How to knit clothes
There are two main ways to knit a warm new thing for your pet: crocheting and knitting. Lately, hand knitting has become very popular, but it is only suitable for thick, heavy yarn, which would make the dog uncomfortable.
Before starting to manufacture a product in any way, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with knitting patterns and models of things.
Sweater knitted
After you have taken your dog's measurements, you can start making the sweater. For knitting, two are suitable simple ways knitting - “Rib” and stockinette stitch. More experienced needlewomen can afford complex patterns, however, for all methods the scheme of further action is the same.
- After you have taken your measurements and selected the yarn, pay attention to the knitting needles. Most sweaters are knitted in the round, which requires 4 or more knitting needles. Occasionally, you can get by with two long (more than 30 cm) knitting needles.
- First, knit a control sample, which will help you calculate the required number of loops and knitting density.
- Start knitting the sweater from the neckline. Here it is recommended to knit 5 rows using the “Rib” method. The back and belly are knitted using stockinette stitch, not forgetting to leave holes for the legs.
- To allocate space for the paws, you need to close some of the loops in the right places, and next row knit with air loops in the same quantity as they were just closed. Starting from this moment, we knit the tummy of the sweater to the very end, not forgetting that for boys it should be shorter than for girls.
- We knit the item to the end and secure the bottom with five rows of elastic so that the item does not fly off and sits comfortably. The sleeves can be knitted separately or the sweater can be left as is.
Crochet jacket
Crocheting is a much simpler method, since during the manufacture of the item you can adjust the number of loops and their direction during the process. When modeling a blouse for an animal, you can initially make individual elements, and then sew them using the same crochet method.
The knitting pattern is approximately the same as when knitting a sweater, but the blouse will have a fastener on the tummy. The neck and bottom of such a thing do not need additional fastening, which makes knitting easier.
As in the case of a sweater, we first knit the back (remembering to leave holes for the paws), then we separately make the belly parts so that one part overlaps the other. One part should also have holes for fastening buttons.
Then we make sleeves separately, if they are needed. At the end, we sew the item together using a hook and the same yarn. To avoid stitching, you can start knitting each piece from the outermost row of the item of clothing. At the end the buttons are attached - and the thing is ready.
Vest
Knitting a vest is no different from the above methods of making a sweater or jacket, with the exception of the absence of sleeves. Knitting starts from the neck (as for a sweater) and ends at the tummy. Both extreme elements should end with an elastic band that narrows the holes.
A warm new thing for your pet can be crocheted or knitted.
This is not difficult to do, but such a thing will most likely protect your four-legged friend from allergies, cold and give him comfort in the winter cold.
With the advent and wide distribution of small smooth-haired dogs, the need arose to walk them in any weather. But decorative breeds do not tolerate cold winters, windy and humid off-seasons. Therefore, there is a need for special clothing for pets. If you go to a pet store looking for a suitable jacket for your little friend, you will be unpleasantly surprised by the high prices for this pleasure. It is much more profitable to make a sweater for dogs yourself.
You won’t have to guess about the sizes; you can measure your pet yourself and make a suitable item, constantly trying it on for the future owner.
Let's start with the knitting needles
The primary purpose of a sweater for a small dog is protection from cold and wind. Therefore, the yarn for this is selected thick and dense, preferably half-wool. You can take thinner threads, but then you need to add mohair or angora yarn and knit in two threads. In addition, such a sweater for dogs should not stretch and absorb a lot of moisture. When you come home from a walk, you can simply shake it and hang it to dry.
This master class presents very simple circuit knitting a pullover for a dog with knitting needles. The entire fabric will be knitted using stockinette stitch, and the collar will be knitted with an elastic band. It won't look very attractive. To make your clothes more fun, you can, for example, knit the sweater itself in one color, and make the collar and binding different. Or take sectional yarn, the knitting of which forms multi-colored stripes on the product.
We will use needles No. 4 and AlizeLanagold yarn; a 100-gram skein contains 240 m of thread, that is, the yarn is quite thick.
- First you need to knit a sample to see what density the sweater will be and select the thickness of the knitting needles. To avoid looseness and increased stretching, it is better to take knitting needles half a size, or one size smaller than suggested in the description.
- Next, take measurements from the dog. First, you need to measure the chest circumference (the area just behind the front paws), the distance from the front paws to the collar and between the front paws. You can immediately measure the length of the back, but this is not necessary, since it can be adjusted while knitting.
- We knit a collar. It should not be too tight around the dog’s neck, so you need to make it wider by a couple of centimeters. It is knitted with a simple elastic band. Its size depends on the size of the dog. For small breeds such as Yorkshire terriers, 4 cm is enough, for dachshunds - 6 cm.
- Let's move on to the fabric of the sweater itself. It is knitted in stockinette stitch. To dilute the smoothness of the knitting, you can add some kind of pattern, for example, a braid of 17 loops. Having knitted the collar, you need to count these loops in the middle and start knitting a pattern on them according to the pattern.
For beginner needlewomen best option- skip this moment and knit the entire product in stockinette stitch.
- Having knitted 2 rows after the collar, we begin expanding by adding 2 loops in each row. The product must be expanded until the circumference of the dog’s chest is reached with a 2-centimeter allowance.
The photo shows circular knitting needles; they were used in the last row so that the yarn could be distributed over them and tried on the dog.
In this case, there should be approximately 1-2 cm left to the paws.
If everything fits, we knit 3 more rows without adding loops.
- We make holes for the paws. They look like triangles, widening towards the middle of the chest.
We knit the chest loops - 3 cm, close the loops for the armhole - 6 cm. We continue knitting until the number of loops is equal to the loops of the armhole and chest. Now you need to close the armhole and knit loops for the dog’s belly.
- Measure the length of the tummy and continue knitting the fabric the right size. It should narrow towards the bottom of the abdomen. We do this by decreasing 2 stitches every 6 rows.
During the work process, the sweater must be measured frequently on the dog.
- Having knitted the product of the required length, we tie the bottom with an elastic band of 6 rows.
- The holes for the legs also need to be tied. This can be done with single crochet or double crochet.
- We sew the product.
If you need to knit a sweater with long sleeves, you can make them raglan. In addition to the fact that it looks beautiful and interesting, your dog will be cozy and comfortable in such clothes.
Crochet sweater
Crocheting a dog sweater is much easier than knitting. The main thing here is to know the size of your pet. You don't even have to use patterns. In addition, you can choose any direction for knitting, from chest to tail or vice versa. You can knit in the round, or you can knit with regular fabric.
When knitting, it is best to use a double crochet stitch. This technique is very simple to perform and does not take much time. The expansion of the product occurs by adding air loops.
- We knit a neckline of the required width.
- Let's sew it together.
- We begin to knit the main fabric, expanding it to the holes for the paws.
- Once the openings are complete, the sweater is knitted into a tube shape, tapering at the belly area.

Clothing for dogs is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity during the cool season! Although, who am I kidding? What a luxury! Of course, clothing for dogs, especially fragile ones, is primarily protection from cold, wind and drafts, but how you want your dog to look stylish and cute in his warm sweater or overalls.
And to the topic of luxury, I’ll add that at all times, it was highly valued handmade, and there was no greater luxury than a hand-sewn dress trimmed with lace woven by the hands of skilled craftswomen. Therefore, by creating things with your own hands, you make your contribution to art, and also make this world warmer and more comfortable!
I suggest you start honing your skills on clothes for your beloved pets. Let's look at how to knit a dog sweater decorated with hearts. This is one of the easiest ways, with a small number of measurements and without a pattern. Or knit according to the pattern with the “ “ pattern.
Let's get started!
We catch our dog and take a few measurements.
- neck circumference (NC);
- chest width (SH);
- paw girth (OL);
- length, from the withers to the beginning of the tail (D).
For work we will need stocking needles or, if the dog is not quite tiny, then circular ones. And, of course, we knit a sample with knitting needles in order to calculate the number of loops, according to the measurements that you took. You will need yarn in two colors, preferably contrasting ones. For girls, white and pink are good, and for my brutal, but very shy macho, I took gray and red yarn.
Neck and raglan
We start knitting a sweater from the top, from the neck. We calculate the number of loops based on the OSH measurement. In the case of our example, there were 64 loops. We distribute them on four knitting needles and knit 15 rows with a 2x2 elastic band. You can do less or you can do more to make a lapel. The smaller the dog, the more the sweater should perform its function - to warm. Therefore, the collar may be higher, the sleeves, and the sweater itself may be longer.
Divide the number of elastic loops by 3 and distribute the resulting amount between the back, chest, and legs. Example:
64:3~22. The dog's back is wider than the chest, so we will allocate 25 loops for this part, 19 for the chest, and 20 for the paws, 10 per paw. You will understand how to do this accurately if you look carefully at your dog and at the proportions of its body. Much depends on the fatness, thinness, and characteristics of the breed. There is no exact formula for all dogs. It will not be difficult for you, as the owner of your pet, to calculate this simple formula.
Having distributed the loops, we place markers or tie threads of a contrasting color.
When there are 2 buttonholes left before the first marker, yarn over, then purl two, throw over the marker, purl two again, and yarn over again. And so on with each marker.
Thus, the product begins to expand.
And here is the first heart on our dog sweater. It will be on the chest. It can be placed in the center, or it can be shifted to any side.
Why inverted? For your convenience, since we knit from above!
We put the first strokes of the heart.
We continue to knit raglan, and do not forget about the heart.
Sleeves
At this stage, you can try the product on the dog so that it becomes clear how it “sits” in the shoulders and that it’s time to leave room for the sleeves.
To be sure, we will calculate the number of loops for this part using the OL measurement and check the bust size using the SH measurement.
This is where the sleeve will be.
Let's transfer the sleeve loops to another knitting needle and leave them for now. Meanwhile, we will continue knitting in the round. We will cast on a working knitting needle from 5 to 10 loops, so that the sleeve does not fit too tightly, so as not to hinder the movements of your active friend. We close the circle and continue knitting.
Body
On the back, we'll perform one more jacquard pattern- two hearts. You can choose any location and size of the picture. If suddenly your dog is very tiny and such a pattern simply does not fit on its back, you can knit one heart from this or the previous pattern.
Following the diagram, we get the following pattern.
Having finished knitting the pattern, continue knitting in the round. The length of the product must be chosen based on the size of the dog, but the length along the tummy should be shorter than the length of the back.
Having decided on the length, we continue knitting with a 2x2 elastic band.
Having knitted about 7 rows of elastic, we close only the tummy area.
The next stage is closing the loops on the back. We transfer the knitting to one knitting needle, and knit the front and back rows, knitting three loops together at the beginning and end of each row. This way the back will be gently rounded. If your dog’s body is long enough, then you can knit two loops, and not in each row, but every other row, so the back will be longer.
Dimensions:
Corresponds to neck circumference 21 (24, 27) cm
Knitting density:
15p x 20p = 10x10cm
You will need:
knitting needles on fishing line No. 4.5
yarn: 50% wool, 50% acrylic or 100% cotton yarn, red. White and green (the amount of yarn depends on the size, as a rule, more than 100g of primary color is not required)
Description:
(before starting work, read the entire description to the end)
Before starting knitting, I advise you to knit a sample of 15 loops X 20 rows and see how many cm you get. And make further calculations based on your sample and the size of your dog!!
We cast on the knitting needles 30 (34.40) loops. We knit with an elastic band 1x1 3-4cm. Then we knit two rows of stockinette stitch and begin to form the raglan.
Let's calculate the raglan. Let's draw a simple picture and mark on it how we will distribute the loops. Please note that the back should be almost twice as large as the breast.
(diagram at the end of the text)
Now you can continue knitting.
1st row (front side of the work) - after the edge, knit 2, 1 yarn over (towards you), 1 purl, 1 yarn over (towards you), 4 (5,7) knit, 1 yarn over (towards you), 1 purl, 1 yarn over (to you), 12(14,16) knit, 1 yarn over (to you), 1 purl, 1 yarn over (to you), 4(5,7) knit, 1 yarn over (to you), 1 purl, 1 yarn over (towards you), 2 knit yarn overs and an edge yarn over.
2nd row (wrong side of the work) - after the edge, purl 3, then knit a knit yarn over the back wall, knit 1, knit a knit yarn over the back wall, 6 (7.9) purl, knit a knit yarn over the back wall, 1 knit , knit yarn over the back wall, 13(15.17) purl, then knit a knit yarn over the back wall, knit 1, knit yarn over the back wall, 6(7.9) purl, then knit a knit yarn over the back wall, 1 knit, yarn over the back wall, purl 3, edge 1.
Continue knitting, adding 1 stitch on each side of the raglan line on each front row. In the purl rows, knit yarn overs in the indicated way, then the holes from them are almost invisible. Do not make any additions on the purl rows. Knit in this way 8-12 cm.
Then, transfer the sleeve loops to the pin. We combine the front and back loops and knit them in a circle with facial loops. However, do not forget that the length of the product on the tummy will be different for girls and boys. We knit: for girls - 13 (15.17) cm, for boys - 11 (13, 15) cm, from the neck.
Next, remove the middle 10 (13.16) loops using a pin. And we continue knitting with front and back rows, as on straight knitting needles. At the same time, at the beginning and at the end of each row we decrease 1 loop. And so 5 rows. This is to create a curve from the *belly* to the back.
And now you have knitted the back to the required length.
Without closing the remaining loops, as if continuing knitting, cast on loops from one side of the knitting (towards the tummy), then transfer the loops from the pin to the knitting needle, and cast on loops from the other side. Thus, you have again closed your knitting in a circle. Knit 1 x 1 2-3 cm with an elastic band and bind off the loops.
Let's return to the sleeves: distribute 22 (25,31) loops onto 4 knitting needles, and knit sleeves of the length you need in a circle (usually 8-10 rows). In the last row we evenly reduce the number of loops by 1/3. We finish knitting the sleeves with an elastic band 1x1 2-3 cm.
We collect loops for the planks. We knit them with a 1x1 2cm elastic band, not forgetting to leave buttonholes. Sew on the buttons.
If you don't want to make a jacket with buttons, then knit in the round from the very beginning.
Using this principle, you can knit any kind of sweaters - the flight of imagination is endless!
Our beloved pets - they are so sweet and believe in us so much. The owner of the dog is already convinced that the dog is man's best friend. Let's insulate our “pet” and give them a charming and warm blouse.
A knitted sweater for a dog is what he needs on cool days. A huge advantage of a knitted sweater for a dog is that it will be true to size. You couldn't ask for anything better.
Yarn and knitting needles are selected together. Depending on the model, you need to choose a knitting needle. If the raglan model is something you see very often, then you should definitely choose double needles. Regular knitting needles with ears will serve good friends to perform classic models.
You need to carefully choose the yarn for your “favorite”; cheap and cold ones are not suitable.
A dog, like a child, requires warmth and affection. This is exactly what the yarn should be like. The yarn is selected for the cold season, and the more warm fibers it contains, the better.
Features of knitting a sweater for a dog on knitting needles
To create a sweater for a dog, you need to go through several steps:
Stage 1: taking measurements
When measuring, take into account that the “pet” will be active in the finished sweater and therefore immediately make adjustments of a few centimeters:
- product length (from collar to tail);
- width of the product (between the front and back paws);
- back and chest circumference;
- distance between paws;
- waist (abdomen) circumference;
- OL - paw circumference;
- ОШ - neck circumference.
The peculiarity of a dog sweater is that the back is usually knitted wider and longer; especially for a dachshund, models need longer lengths. Let's walk through step by step for beginners how to properly knit a warm sweater for a dog with your own hands.
Important! All measurements presented should be taken when the dog is in a relaxed state.
Stage 2: gate
Based on the measurements, a set of loops is made and then the neck is knitted.
More often the collar is simply done with an elastic band.
Important! The neck for a dog is not made long so that it does not interfere with the “pet”.
Stage 3: Raglan
The length of the raglan will depend on your measurements, as will all the details of this product.
Stage 4: sleeves
The loops for the sleeve will be closer to each other on the side of the front piece.
Stage 5: back/front
After reaching the required length, you need to make an elastic band and close the loops.
Knitting pattern
A sample (about 10-12 cm) is no small thing. We cast on loops on 2 knitting needles, then transfer them to 1 knitting needle, and use the 2nd knitting needle to knit the selected pattern. It is advisable to wash the sample, perhaps the yarn will shrink, then calculate the number of loops for the pet.
After all, it is this small detail that will help you accurately calculate the required number of loops for any part of the sweater.
Knit stitch - knit one row with only knit stitches, the next with purl stitches, then repeat the rows.
All this is done before the knitting stage.
Advice! It is advisable to outline a small plan and draw a pattern, recording all the measurements and converting everything into loops.
Step-by-step description of knitting a sweater for a pet
Make your pet's sweater easier with detailed and clear descriptions. We offer you interesting 4 models of sweaters for dogs, made on knitting needles. The dogs in these things are simply adorable, and the handsome dogs themselves will not want to take them off after a walk.
Model 1
Sweater with Norwegian pattern V gray color It will look great on a small dog (for a miniature poodle or Yorkie).
To work you need:
- yarn of matching colors;
- knitting needles No. 3.
Description:
We cast on the required number of loops with stocking needles and perform a 2*2 rib stitch with a height of 6-7 cm. Then we move on to a simple stockinette stitch and at the same time 8 increase loops. You can move on to diagrams of Norwegian patterns. At a height of 4-12 cm, the knitting will need to be distributed over additional knitting needles.
Knit the sleeves separately from the rest of the work.
A delicate sweater made from melange yarn will fit well on short and stocky dogs, such as a pug or others.
To work you need:
- knitting needles No. 5 and 6;
- melange yarn - 150 g.
Description:
This pattern is knitted like a regular sweater (not raglan). We start from the back, making it wider. The product begins with an elastic band and continues with stockinette stitch. A small deviation for the armholes.
The front shelf is somewhat narrower than the back.
The sleeves are two small parts.
The low collar is made of 1*1 elastic.
After creating each part separately, everything is stitched together. A loop stitch is used to sew the sleeves together.
Model 3
A blouse with arans looks very good. But for a dog sweater, you shouldn’t make aranas on the sleeves and the front front. All this will only disturb the pet. It is enough to decorate only the back with arans.
To work you need:
- yarn Alize Cashmere 100% wool;
- stocking needles.
Description:
You need to knit with raglan and start from the collar.
Gate. Cast on 32 stitches on the needles. Knit 4 rows with an elastic band 1*1, then with an elastic band 2*1, for it you need to add one loop above each knit stitch. After 4 rows of this elastic band, switch to a 2*2 elastic band and make inconspicuous additions for it.
Raglan. Knit according to the patterns, at the same time make additions at 4 points for a neat raglan. The front and sleeves are stockinette stitch. The back is immediately made according to the pattern from the Arana pattern.
Front/back. The back and front are knitted in the round, but the front is finished a little earlier, for this you need to leave the loops on an additional needle. Knit the back, then pick up loops along the edge to knit the elastic around the entire fabric (front and back). The bottom elastic is knitted similarly to the collar elastic, but in the reverse order.
Sleeves. Knit each sleeve in a circle and finish facial surface fabrics with elastic band. This is the same elastic band as on the collar of the product, but in reverse order.
